I recently refreshed my system with Windows 7 and reinstalled IL2-1946. I set up everything as I had it before, but noticed a drastic reduction in frame rates when using any level of anti-aliasing. Before I would have 80+ fps on perfect mode with 4xAA, and now I get very bad stutters and low fps when looking at the water. If I notch the water down to "2", I get 200+ fps. If I have "3" water and turn off AA via nHancer, I get 100+ fps. But, any combination of perfect water and AA causes stutters and low (10-30 max) fps.

I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers on a 8800GTS-512. Resolution is 1680x1050 full screen.

I had my backup conf.ini from my previous install (when things were running great) and I am seeing the same results when using that file.

Graphic settings are:

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=2
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=3
Water=3
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=0
PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

I've tried various AA settings in Nhancer, all of which bring the game to its knees.

Any tips? Has anyone had any issues with the latest Nvidia drivers of this sort? All the other games I reinstalled are running as expected.

Hi Mackenson,

I've been having frame rate issues as well. I can't seem to get good rates using perfect landscape with water set to anything but 0. Have a look at these threads:

I'm still working it so please let us know how you make out.

Good hunting,

After fiddling around things seem to have improved for me, but going from water 2 to 3 is still a killer. I can run at 120+ fps in the default quick mission unless I go to water 3. It settles in at 60 fps on water 3, but the fps is very twitchy and looking at the water causes stutters (as low as 10 fps).

Which is odd because, as I said, this is the exact same set-up as previous install, except for Windows 7 and the newer Nvidia drivers. I used to rarely drop below 100 fps on water 3 before.

The differences between water 2 and water 3 are subtle, so I think I'll leave well enough alone for now. I plan on picking up one of the new ATI cards at some point for the extended multi-monitor support, so I'll see how that works out.

I did try the compatibility mode change suggested in another thread, but that doesn't help.

I'm not sure if it will help but you could try rolling back your vid driver to an earlier version.
