I just redid my system & now have the Gigabyte X48 DS4 motherboard with 2 gigs ram plus I have the Nvidia 8800 GT video card. I wanted the 8800 GTX , but they didn't have it so I am using this one until the GTX comes in.

Anyway, In il2 I just can't seem to get it adjusted correctly. The water is pitch black & the wings are all jaggy.

I have never had a Nvidia card before so I know it is just getting the proper adjustments and the proper driver.

I am sure that this has come up before, but the search hasen't brought me any info.

could one of you please clue me in on what each individule setting should be?

I have the HP W2207 flat screen.

The ingame settings are just as they were for the X1900XT which I replaced.

Just thought would try the Nvidia to see if it was any more clear for my old eyes.

On my dxdiag it says that the drivers installed are: version 6.14.0011.6921 dated 12/4/07

any other information you might need to help me along??

As for driver, I use the NGO NVIDIA Optimized Driver 1.16369, good performance and good looks...

As for jagged wings, up the value of Anti Aliasing in Nvidia's control panel...

Good Luck!

.K. FT...I replaced mine with yours and it is definately better.

I don't have the black water, but I still have the jaggies & the white ants running along the shore lines.

I have tried the vertical sync at Use 3D and also Forced On, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

I just ran outl of time ...Gotta go to work...Dang I'll just have to continue in about 10 hours...

I'll try those drivers when get home.

Do you need to use a driver cleaner after uninstalling the nvidia drivers?
I try not to use them because eventually they seem to screw things up in the long run..

I think I have the driver cleaner pro on here somewhere...lol..

Just today I reverted back to the NGO drivers, after using the latest from NVidia, w/o using Driver Cleaner Pro... it worked okay.

As for jaggies: like I said, in NVidia's control panel, change the value of Anti Aliasing to 8Q or so...

Have nice day at work!

I recently put a 8800gt in my system, and voila, now I'm stuck with the dancing ants along coasts and river banks. I'm using 16q AA too. It's really maddening. My old SLI 7800gt setup using 8s AA didn't have this problem. The 4.09b patch with the latest batch of dll's for it helped a lot but it's still not perfect, nor is 4.09b supported on online servers. If it wasn't for the fact that the 8800gt is so much better in other areas, I would have gone back to the 7800gt SLI. I hate to say this, but welcome to the club: there are lots of other posts that complain about IL-2's running on the 8800's. And BTW, the NGO 163.96 does NOT support the 8800gt. I do recommend the latest 175.16 driver from nvidia though it does not help the jaggies for IL-2.

Oh man,,,this is a huge disappointment. I haven't seen this horrible of a picture for 5-6 years since my first computer.

My ati X1900XT had no jaggies, but I did have the ants running along the bank.

The main problem is that I can actually see another aircraft far enought away to do something about it. I can also pick out ground targets with enough time & distance to get the sight on them. With the ati card that was not possible.

But the aircraft from the outside view is enough to make you puke.

I just don't know enough about Nvidia or their website to do anything about it either.

I'm sick...

Oppps, dang me, otta take arope&hangme...
I have a bad habbet of whining before I see all the way through...

Anyway, using custom settings I set it at:
Anisotropic and S3TC
Use Vertex Arrays
Multiexture
Combine
Secondary Color
Vertex Array Extension
Texture anisotropic Extension

With just these checked I went into the Nvidia Control Panel and set:

Use my preference emphasizing: Quality
Under manage 3D settings
Anisotropic filtering = 8x
Antialising-Gamma corrrection = On
Antialiasing - Mode = Override any application setting
Antialiasing - Setting = 4x
Antialiasing - Transparency = supersampling
conformant texture kclamp = use OpenGL specification
Error reporting = OFF
Extension limit = OFF
Force mipmaps = Trilnear
Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode
Stereo Display mode = Use vertical interlace monitor
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic sample... = OFF
Texture filtering - egative OD bias = Allow
Texture filtering - Quality = High performance
Texture filtering - Trilnear optimization = ON
threaded optimization = ON
Triple buffering = OFF
Verticle sync = Use the 3D application setting

These are the settings that I came up with and the ***JAGGIES** are gone!

I have a slight movement in small spots in the ground area.

However, I now notice some small stutters/lags even with my FRAPS FPS reading 38 or so.
This I am going to have to check out more.

I do notice that I can't see the aircraft against the ground at as far a distance so if you see something in my settings that may help that...please sing out..

This Nvidia seems to be a good card, but the individule settings are going to be a big thing...

Try and set this to OFF...

And Texture Filtering - Quality: Try and go for High Quality, should not cost performance...

Thanks FT...
I did those settings changes + a few more and have gotten rid of the stutters. The distance land area & lakes are all blocky & moving a lot. I now lhave some small squares throughout the land and water area...but no jaggies or stutters.

here is 115 seconds of Black Death Track...

2008-06-13 13:17:02 - il2fb
Frames: 4183 - Time: 75011ms - Avg: 55.765 - Min: 33 - Max: 69

I know that there is a-way to smooth those distance textures out but I haven't figured it out yet. These whole dang settings are just hit & miss.

Do you have a core duo processor? (I'm not sure what a Gigabyte X48 DS4 motherboard indicates)

Il-2 doesn't work with threaded optimization very well, if you turn it to "off" then it runs on one core processor instead of all of them. This improved my frame rate--also there is a way to specify in the conf.ini what processor it runs on--I put it on my 2nd core and it runs a lot better than on the 1st one for some reason.

Not sure if this would help since you have an 8800, but it's easy enough to try out. I have an 8600GT card and again these processor options helped my frame rate a lot and really decreased stuttering.

I just upgraded to the 8800GTX and had some probs. Here's what I can suggest

1. http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/49310655/m/9311005366

2. Upgrade to the new NVidia drivers (released 18 May I think, v175.16 38,861kb)

3. Force OFF Vsync. You'll double your frame rate

4. In IL2 setup>Video use 'Maximum Settings'

5. In game set 'video options' and max out everything - your card should handle it no problem.

I think I run anti-aliasing at x8, it's not max'd out.

Hope this helps.

I'm glad you got some satisfaction. The only jaggies I now have with my 8800gt are distant shores/river banks and details on aircraft (both of which drives me nuts). It's like the AA on the 8800gt is not consistent; other edges are nicely smoothed and everything else looks fantastic. I'm a quality freak: I gladly take max settings with 30 FPS average over lowered quality settings with higher FPS. If you solve the distant jaggies problem, please post your solution so we can all share it. S!

Here's a recognizable sample of the problems I have with jaggies. It may not look like much but as you are flying along, those circled coasts are really twinkling. Anyone else have this problem? I run using 1280x1024 (FP), 16Q AA, 8 AF, highest quality. Anything less than this looks worse.

The flickering shorelines are caused by the fact that regular Anti-Alaising does not work on aplha textures which are used to create the shorelines, the supersampling eliminates this in DirectX but not for OpenGL which you should use in il2. ATI just came out with supersampling in openGL with the latest cat drivers and is simply awesome. Hopefully Nvidia will also come out with this feature soon, I myself am getting ready to switch from the X1950XT (which I'm selling to Jamesdietz) to an 8800GTS G92, so I will miss this new ATI feature. Someone let me know if I am mistaken but as far as I know nvidia does not yet do supersampling AA in openGL.

I used 8xS AA with my 7800gt SLI, and I assumed that the 'S' was for supersampling (I recall reading about this somewhere). The 8xS AA made the edges of text fuzzy and it seemed that other edges had this effect though the coastlines effectively had no jaggies at far distances. I also tried directX with the 8800gt but the loss of the shaders for water effects made it unacceptable.

Other than these jaggies, the 8800gt's performance and IQ at moderate resolutions is fantastic for a sub $200US card IMO. Next year I'll see how it works in a new rig; I'm sure my 939 4200+ X2 chokes it considerably. S!

Edit: It turns out 8xS was not pure SSAA, but SS combined with MS. It seems that there is interest in reviving this AA mode for the 8800 series; I sure hope they do so soon.

I just came back from the shop where they replaced the loaner 8800GT for my new Asus 8800GTS.
The view looks exactly the same to me on the Black Death track.
y Frapslog shows: Avg: 54.000 - Min: 31 - Max: 63 which I am very happy with, but those dang Shimmers are driving me to drink...

I know it must be just getting the correct settings between the Nvidia control panel and the il2 setup.

I have about a 3/4 inch printout of "TweakGuides.Coms "Nvidia Forceware Tweak Guide" Where he is very detailed on how to adjust Nvidia through the control panel.

I have spent hours trying different combinations, but I just can't seem to get rid of the shimmering. Some times it covers quitte a large area just ahead of lthe aircraft. White runways are really wild...

I am just wondering if anyone with this card has completely smooth graphics in il2?

I don't want to spend any more time on this if there is no hope anyway...

From nvidia's NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Architecture Technical Brief in regards to their "Lumenex Engine"
quote:
In many games, the new 16× high quality mode will yield frame-per-second performance results similar to standard 4× multisampled mode, but with much improved image quality. In certain cases, such as the edge of stencil shadow volumes, the new antialiasing modes will not be enabled and those portions of the scene will fall back to 4× multisampled mode.

I guess this means those jaggies on the coasts are there to stay for us 8800/9800 series owners. It's a feature, not a problem. Sad

Too bad I didn't get a 3780, the main reasons I didn't was its flawed implementation for processing AA and ATI driver/control panel issues I've had.
