My problem with my USB wireless card can't be a USB issue because I boot into XP on the same PC with another drive and the USB devices ( including the same wireless device ) work perfectly. So that proves it a OS or driver issue.

I'm running IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 with Windows 7 x86 Build 7264 from a directory other than C:\Program Files in Windows XP Pro SP3 compatibility mode with NVidia WHQL certified Windows 7 drivers but have taken a hit of around 25% compared with Windows XP. Are there any tricks to get better frame rates with Windows 7? I've downloaded and installed the latet DirectX 9 drivers as well to no avail. Any ideas?

Make sure Multi-threaded optimization is off in the nvidia control panel.

Thanks for the tip, Urufu_Shinjiro!

I had the multi-threaded option set to its default value via nHancer, and changed it to OFF as needed for "older OpenGL applications", although I wouldn't have thought that IL-2 Sturmovik was all that old.
In a couple of quick runs of the Black Death track, it does indeed seem that the system is running more stable, without the stuttering I'd observed before, and an increase in FPS as a result. But my GPU is running hotter in Windows 7, and I'd still say that this sim and Windows XP are the perfect match. Since I'm running Windows in a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro for gaming purposes, I may just go back to XP. Will give it a few days more before deciding...perhaps some more tweaking will help!

Salut

I got it!
The video settings weren't my problem at all, but the sound configuration turns out to have slowed the system down. The RealTek audio output configuration was set with all sorts of enhancements which were killing my frame rates. I simply disabled them and my rates jumped to those approaching the original Windows XP performance. Who would have thought that the sound settings were killing me?
Salut

With the preorder discounts available soon it could be a bit of a bargain!

That's why I use a discrete sound card. Even though onboard sound has come a long way in quality, it still uses resources (CPU cycles, memory) when you are gaming that will decrease your performance. Using an add on sound card takes a good deal of 'load' off the processor, and gives you much better performance.

Also, IL2 is an old game...getting close to 8 years old now.

Vista and windows 7 do not have hardware acceleration for direct sound, so even your dedicated card will use cpu cycles.

I think you get an Upgrade Version that does a full install over your Old OS, checks if the old OS is legit, and than reboots and does a clean install.

I hate those stupid european rules that MS cant bundle software with there OS that other companies make alterantives for like Media Player and Internet Explorer...

You get an OS with out an Browser... How do they expect you to download a Browser or Media Player now than???

This looks like the full package to me,NOT an upgrade!

QUOTE:

Microsoft has set the UK retail pricing for Windows 7, which is due to launch worldwide on 22 October. Prices range from £49.99 for pre-ordered Home Premium to £229.99 for Ultimate.

The company has also said that, due to the European Commission antitrust ruling on Internet Explorer bundling, it will not be offering the cheaper upgrade versions of Windows 7 in the European retail market. All versions of Windows 7 in the European market will have the 'E' assignation.

"We will only be shipping E editions in the European Economic Community," Laurence Painell, Windows OEM & WGA Product Manager, told ZDNet UK. "We will no longer offer Windows Vista or XP dynamic upgrade and will not be offering upgrade product in [that] market, only fully packaged products."

He confirmed that European users of previous versions of Windows will have to reinstall all applications and data manually, although Microsoft will be offering guidance on procedures.

The standard retail pricing for Windows 7 will be £149.99 for Home Premium, £219.99 for Professional and £229.99 for Ultimate. The notional prices for the unobtainable upgrades for existing Windows owners are £79.99, £189.99 and £199.99 respectively.

However, UK shoppers will initially be able to buy the standalone product at upgrade prices for a limited period. "[The full retail price] is more than people would expect to pay," said Painell. "We will be offering fully packaged product at upgrade prices from the launch to the beginning of next year."

The operating system can also be pre-ordered at promotional prices of £49.99 for Home Premium and £99.99 for Professional. There is no pre-order promotion for Ultimate.

People buying Windows PCs from 26 June will have the option to upgrade to Windows 7 "at little or no cost", Painell said. "This is our Tech Guarantee process, and it operates through the retailers and manufacturers. It's up to them whether they charge for it, so it's important the consumer checks."

The reason for excluding retail upgrades from the UK, Painell said, was that the EU judgement made it impossible for the company to include Internet Explorer on the desktop. "It's technically possible to have an upgrade without Internet Explorer," he said, "but testing that that would have delayed the launch. We may have a postage process, FTP access or some other technology offering to give IE to those who choose it. We're deciding between the different channels, and will be working through this and other things for the market by launch."

New PCs bought with Windows 7 could have Internet Explorer, he said. "We don't expect manufacturers to ship without a browser. We expect 100 percent of PCs in market to have browsers. It's up to the manufacturer or retailer to have a separate agreement for that."

Last part i knew, didnt hear anything about us on continental europe getting the full "retail" version for an "upgrade" price.

Did hear that it was a full install but that it needs to verify that you have a Legit copie of Vista or XP during instalation (could posibly be by starting the install from XP or Vista, or by typing your XP/Vista product key during install, but the last case has some loopholes to it)

Hopefully what you posted aplies for the whole of Europe so i dont have to install Vista first to install Windows 7 on a new Harddrive, but it could mean if you upgrade any hardware like a HDD that it wont let you re-activate the OS for a second time.

There also seems to be a Family Pack on the way wich is a licence for Windows 7 to install on 3 Computers.
