It is so funny to me that 5 years ago.. Nv had the 5000 series.. and ATI had the 9000.. today.. Nv has a 9000 series and ATI has a 5000 series .. and both sets of cards are more than tripple the processing power of the previous incarnations on both ends... Too Happy

Lol, never looked at it that way!

As for cmirko's question, these cards are incredible, but I have not read any reports of them being used with Il2 so not sure if there are problems, but I doubt there are any different issues than with the 4800 series (occasional blue lights and having to set Catalyst AI to off). Go ahead and get the card, then you can let us know, lol.

went and bought xfx 5850 - silent and fast Smile which is a great combination in my book Smile

no problems at all with il2, played all evening and didn't even have one "flashing textures" when tracers went by me.....

I'm using 9.10 cat drivers, hope that flashing textures stay permanently gone...

cheers

With that much raw power for IL-2 you should experiment with water=4; it's a huge improvement in the water visual quality. And BTW, where were you able to get your hands on that xfx 5850 card? All local and online stores haven't had any for weeks and it looks like it'll be a month or more before they'll be available again. Definately looking at getting one for my new rig...thanks for posting!

With ATI cards, water=2 gives the same IQ as nVidia cards give at water=4. I haven't tried it with my card, but it's possible that if he went with water=4 he would get an IQ decrease.

Now as for the 5xxx availability, and for the upcoming next gen cards from nVidia, it's going to sparce. This is the reason.

TSMC are unfortunately running into more problems with their 40nm process technology which is causing issues for AMD and Nvidia in regards to GPU production.

Both graphics cards giants are expected to face shipment delays of their most current orders from TSMC due to these issues with 40nm yields. TSMC chairman Morris Chang spoke to Heaven Media earlier today and reported that 40nm yields recently dropped to just over 40% at the beginning of October and that they are working as hard as they can to resolve these issues before the end of the year.

For those of you who don't know TSMC are a vital link in the production chain for both graphics card manufacturers and given the poor state of the current 40nm market with the release of the excellent HD5000 series from AMD it is tough for AIB partners to get the necessary samples to meet demand. With Nvidia's Fermi just around the corner this situation is only going to get worse especially in the run up to Christmas holiday season.

TSMC have been having issues for quite some time with this complex process and have actually improved their yield rates from 20 percent during the Q2 phase - unfortunately it is still not reaching the required levels to deliver the goods to both Nvidia and AMD. ...

it seems that new card resolved all of the problems with flashing textures and "tracer bug" Smile - I haven't had one situation over the whole weekend..., I think it may possibly be the technology that prevents errors in vram being displayed that is "responsible" Smile

does someone else still has "tracer" bug with 9.10 and older generation of cards ?

hi Brando,

I still haven't installed my W7 but in winxp i haven't had one problem Smile - found the techincal explanation about error corrections in bus/vram
http://www.anandtech.com/video...doc.aspx?i=3643&p=12

hope that this is the case and that il2 stays "bugfree" - it also could be good if someone sent this bug report/solution to ATi so that they can fix the drivers for older generation of their cards

cheers

Thanks for explaining why I couldn't find even a 5850 for sale, online, anywhere for love nor money. What does this bode for holiday sales and what are OEM's gonna do in their system builds?
