I would like to ask whether the elevator trim is a multiturn wheel in real aircraft. I am modding my Saitek X-52 throttle to use use a big (60mm ~ 2.36") trim wheel on its side, so i would like to ask what to use: single turn or multiturn... Thank you in advance!

Depends on which aircraft you're referring to. That Cessna trim wheel you illustrate can turn a few times, and is used a lot on approach and final!

Many aircraft do not have a manual trim wheel (Mooney M20 series and Ovation, among others), there's a trim toggle switch on the panel and yoke for those guys. I imagine others have both.

So, in short, the trim wheel in most - if not all - aircraft with a manual trim wheel can turn a few times.

Well, many of WWII era aircraft have trim wheel. Thumbs Up

You can use wheel associated a multi turn potentiometer to have a fine trim.

I am currently looking what to use as a wheel... Any ideas? I am checking all the wheels of my baby-cousin's toys!

And finding a multi-turn pot is quite an expensive thing here in Greece... 15Euros (~18$) for any Bourns.. And no 3-turns.. Only 10-turn and 5-turn..

5 3/4 turns is what's listed in me109 manual.

i'm using a 5 turn pot for elev trim with a couple of cd's glued together for the 'wheel'.

would probably use 5 turn pots for rudder/aileron trim if i was rebuilding, rather than the 10 turn pots i'm currently using

vernier scales for pots are very nice (if expensive)

The dials are a very nice feature! But they cost something extra!

I am looking into buying one of these, from a bicycle shop.

They are helping-wheels for baby bicycleriders... But they are 150mm ~ 6", too big to mount on my X52 throotle...
And the quest continues..

Thank you for the answers!

I've seen ww2 planes with dials for trim as well as wheels.

You might consider an old TV dial. I also have these old hard rubber mounts used on the bottom of furniture. They are about 2-3 inches in diameter and about a half inch thick.

You might see if you have anything like that laying around.

yeah- looked at something similar to those stabilizer wheels reckoned they'd need to use gears/belts to avoid putting weight on the pot shaft.
you could always extend back from throttle- aluminium L section is handy

previously the L section was bolted to a plate tha sat under cougar throttle- might work for you?

Instead of multi-turn pot, use plastic gears:

To trim wheel, try metallic pot lid - I see this in Flight Sim communit:

Or toy wheels:

Heinkel He111 use acrylic disc...

In this solution guy use a PCV disc, with small tube around, an get good result:

HAHAHAHAHA Too Happy THANX SOKOL!

We seem to be exactly in the same wavelength mate!! I am already bidding a lot of 40 LEGO Technic's gears in E-bay! Exactly what i was considering!

I guess we would do great business together!
Thank you for your advise! I am still looking for alternatives, because i cannot trust LEGO will work before trying it..

I just picked up a trim wheel from a cessna 150 on ebay for ca. $15.00. Am working on interfacing to a pot now.

Unfortunately most of the good opportunities in Ebay do not ship overseas..

Nice find mate! Looking forward for some pictures of your finished mod! Good luck with it!
