Hello.

I installed 1946 last week and flew around for a bit. Today I clicked on the shortcut on the desktop -- nothing. The hourglass pops up for a moment then more of nothing.

I have tried starting it from the .exe in the Program Files in the Directory and even used the "Open As" command. Nothing.

I have reinstalled and still the same.

What am I overlooking?

Thanks for any help you could lend.

Cheers,

Flying Colander

What operating system are you using?
If you run under Vista you shouls NOT install to the default location or anywhere under /Program Files/ - make a directory, for example c:/Games/ and point the installer there if you use Vista.
It's best to install all other utilities for IL-2 there too. Vista will deny access to conf.ini under /Program Files/ and so the game will not work.
If you use XP and your drive uses NTFS check that conf.ini is not Read Only. If it is, and the Read Only Attribute returns when you try to clear it, you need to take ownership of the conf.ini file and the game folder. If you are running any virtual drive(s) you need to turn those off.If you use deamon tools they need to be uninstalled completely.

Thanks for the quick response.

I am using XP 64. The first time I installed, everything played without a hitch.

I doubled checked per your suggestion, the conf.ini is readable and not 'Read Only'.

Nor do I have virtual drives or any burning tools.

I did notice one strange thing in the Directory. There are two Program Files folders. One is "Program Files" and the other "Program Files (x86)". Does this matter? The install seemed to place 46 in this second x86 folder.

Also, I forgot to mention that I tried installing the patch 4.08m. Does '46 need this patch or is this strictly for those using the merged series? After I applied the patch the game never started again.

However, even after a fresh install, the game still fails to play. Strange.

The patch is needed for online play and if you wish to upgrade to anything above the out-the-box 4.07m You need to direct all patches into your (x86) program folder. IL-2 is a 32-bit program (that's what the x86 means). the folder under the (x86) is your main game folder.
Try to uninstall the game completely through Add or Remove Programs. then install everything again using the x86 folder for program and patches
Patches are updates that add/overwrite files in the main game directory. If they get redirected to another folder the game will be completely messed up, and you can't expect it to work. Right-click the icon you start IL-2 with and select properties. The main game directory should be mentioned there. that's where all updates/patches,skins, campaigns, add-ons and utilities need to be directed to.

Xiolablu3 - I don't think it is the Securom. It happens before Securom starts up, otherwise there would not have been mention of an hour glass but of a spinning disk cursor.
Furthermore: In case of copy protection schemes preventing use of legally purchased software, copyright laws worldwide (name an exception if you can) explicitely allow the circumvention of such schemes. This is certainly true for the US as well as all EU countries. I know international copyright law is regulated by WTO treaties, but national laws always take precedence. If there is a spinning disk, he can flash his DVD drive firmware (free from DVD manufacturer) and set the transfermode of his IDE/SATA channel to "DMA if Available" instead of "PIO mode". both things should be done anyway, and are by no means a circumvention of the copy protection. They just make it work with current hardware. In case it is incompatible with x64 Operating systems he could buy the US retail version which has no copyright protection at all. I'm still waiting for someone to issue a complaint against Ubisoft with the EC. I'd be very interested in hearing the reasons why europeans Australians and Asians are regarded a bigger risk with regards to copying than Americans.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me out. I just got finished uninstalling the game again. I even used a registry cleaner to make sure.

Reinstalled '46 by itself and got the final splash screen which prompted Exit or Play. Pushed Play and again, nothing.

I do not think this is an anti-piracy conflict. I am using a US version of '46 and remember I did have the game up and running just three days ago with the exact configuration I am using now: XP 64 and Lite-On Blu-ray disk player.

Did you install under a directory you made yourself? outside of ANY /Program Files/ e.g. c:/Games/ should be OK. If it is a US Retail version (one red and one black DVD) there can be no copyright protection scheme problem. The US retail version has no copyright protection at all.
It must be the Windows x64 that produces the problems. install as XP32 compatible program by right clicking a.exe and DO point it to c:/games/ anyway.Exit the menu - use start - all programs etc to start the game or the desktop icon. do not use the dvd menu to start it.
Did you get the menu
(il2setup) at the end of the install where you needed to select your video sound etc options? If not run il2setup.exe in the main game folder and then try to start the game.
Don't use the autorun feature of the DVD for anything. It has been severely bugged from the start. Nothing that will harm your system, but it will not work correct.

To exclude SecuRom as being the culprit, check whether it is present on your computer.

If it's installed, a folder 'Securom' should be in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\...

(For sure, it could be there because of other installed software, if it's there, check the folder's creation date)

If it's not there, maybe a DxDiag Report can help? (Though for x64... you may need to start dxdiag with a specific parameter... I dunno which though, sorry...)

Securom can be checked for by rightclicking il2fb.exe - if there is an entry "Launch Analysis" securom is there - you can launch it to check for the original DVD in the drive. If it is there you will have confirmed Securom presence in il2fb.exe
The Securom folder under Application Data is not always present.

It might be a problem with WOW64 - the 32bit emulation layer used by Windows x64. That would mean Windows x64 was not installed correct.

It does run on other people's XP x64 systems.
uninstall
DO NOT use autorun feature.
DO NOT mess with Windows registry or use ANY cleaner. let the add/remove program uninstaller handle everything.
install by running a.exe from the DVD, if possible in XP 32 bit compatibility mode.
DOUBLE CHECK where il2fb.exe ends up. THAT is your main game folder. ALL patches need to go there, skins, campaigns etc need to be placed under that folder in their appropriate sub folders. and ALL il-2 utilities need to point to that folder or the il2fb.exe there.
After install use windows explorer to go to that folder and double click il2fb.exe to start the game. If it still does not work restore your system to a point before you first tried to install 1946, then install/try as pointed out above.

Just a few thoughts. After installing, you need to open il2setup and make the selections from the dropdown menus that corresponds to your specific hardware.
Also, are you testing before applying the 4.08m patch?

Max, I have both XP Pro and XP Pro x64. The "Launch Analysis" only displays in XP Pro, not in x64. Since x64 is not a supported OS, that might explain why there are some problems that need specific solutions.

I keep 46 on the XP Pro drive as I still use HazardScript for my x45.

Have spent a joyless Saturday trying to get '46 to play nice but to no avail.

I am confident it isn't a Securom issue as I am using a US game version. Thanks for the suggestion, FoolTrottel. I ran DxDiag, which has a run 64bit dxdiag button on the lower left. Is this what you meant by "specific parameter?"

Max, I followed your suggestions and made a folder outside of Program Files. I doubled checked to make sure il2fb.exe unzipped there too.

I turned off my firewall in case I'd accidentally denied '46 access to something. Then I used System Restore to a pre-1946 point and then reinstalled 1946. Nada.

This surprised me. I was sure this would work as '46 has played on my computer configuration.

Nor do I think it's a corrupt 32bit to 64bit emulation layer. I have other 32bit games and programs working without a hitch.

Here's my DxDiag. Any suggestions before I blitz my box and install XP Pro?

FC.

This is only a suggestion you may want to consider before a new OS install, along with some general information that may/may not apply to you.

I installed 46 on my XP Pro x64 partition. "Launch Analysis" was absent but the 'Securom' folder was in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\....

Everything works as it should.

I am going to leave a process for you that should completely remove all trace of 46. It may be at some point the initial install was corrupted, but the removal incomplete. There are no guarantees, but it has happened in the past.

Control panel/add-remove programs, uninstall 46

There will be folders left behind from the uninstaller. They can be found in the orginal Ubisoft folder. Delete all of these. If you had 46 at other drives/locations, delete those files.

Empty files using the Run command:
%temp%
%systemroot%\temp
prefetch

Using regedit delete this string

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946

Last step:

Open My Computer then open the Local Disk (C)
Open the program files (x86) folder.
Click on the tools menu then choose folder options
Click on the view tab and tick the box labelled "show hidden files and folders". Press OK
Open the installshield installation information folder
Search for a folder named {79438F1E-DEC3-443D-9DCD-FECE2D668C605}
Right click on the folder and choose rename. Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD. Press the enter key.

Empty the recycle bin and reboot.

All traces of 46 should be gone.

Lower sound acceleration to Standard in the dxdiag tool.

Reinstall, but no patching.
Select your specific hardware from the drop down menus in il2setup. Save and launch.

My dvd came from Austrailia and has SecurRom. When launching from the desktop shortcut, there is a spinning disc for about 10 secs before I see the splash screen.

Hope this helps and good luck.

So, no SecuRom?
Maybe just double check for it's presence...?

(Did you install the game and run it for the first time without a reboot of the computer in between? A reboot will do special things to devices just installed... and SecuRom will install a device on game install... and it may work different after a reboot... )

Hello all.

Unfortunately, Steve V, I jumped the gun. After a fruitless weekend I started from tabla rasa. I nuked my box and re-installed XP Pro.

I wish I had been more patient. I would have liked to try your last suggestion. If it hadn't worked for me, it might have worked for someone else.

Thanks to all of you for your time and quick responses. Having a bunch of helpful strangers out there is a reassuring thought. Hopefully, someone else can benefit from this thread.

Cheers,

Flying Colander
