Downloaded 4.09m and all is well after a few false starts. I have an unrelated-to-4.09m question, though.

In going into the conf. file and adjusting, as recommended for 4.09m, the water, geography, etc, I was reminded that there is an "effect" line - mine currently set to '1'.

What does "effect" control, and is '1' the highest setting (1 is on, 0 is off).

I tried to search this, briefly, and it's probably there, somewhere, but I thought I'd bring it up just for the opportunity of having yet another look at what is probably an old topic.

I assume you mean the 'Effects' setting. Valid parameters are 0,1,2. Unless you have a very slow computer, I would set it to 1. I advise not to set it to 2. Even the fastest computers have some problems with this setting.

Effects control things such as smoke, water splashes, explosions, etc. Although pretty, they will absolutely kill your frame rate when these Effects are on your screen.

Try setting it to 2 and see how it runs...

thanks, guys, and sorry to not have responded sooner - found myself at a different location and couldn't log in for some reason.

I did set it at two, but only get to try it for a minute or so with no big difference noticed, good or bad. Hope to try again tonight.
