Just want to make sure I got this correct.

In 1946, take the ';' from infront of the Process Affinity Mask entry.

1 is one core 2 is the other core and 3 is both cores.

What kind of performance do you get with one or both cores?

Thanks

Mine is set to 2 ...to use the second core. Setting it to both cores with a dual core processor doesn't work very well.

The original use of processaffinity was more for CPU's with hyperthreading which is sort of like two cores but not really (thats the easy description).

I still have a pc with HT and turned it off and 1946 ran better.

I thought there used to be a thread here about '

duo core optimization?

I think 0 is for both cores, 1 is for core 1, and 2 is for core 2, though there is some confusion about this.

the game doesn't work very well with threaded optimization off, so turn it off in the nvidia control panel (or wherever) and try the different affinitymask settings and see what makes the game smoothest for you.

One would think setting IL2 up to use 1 processor, and assign all the other functions (TeamSpeak, TrackIR etc.) to use the other core is a good idea, performance wise.

I have tried this, but I did not see any benefits from it... (Core2Duo E6600 @2.4Ghz)

With a Dual core you have Core-0 and Core-1, thats how the system reads/displays it.

With a decent core you see not much benefit from having IL2 use just one Core anyway, but if you gor something under 1.8GHz you might see a benifit from it.

This is interesting to me. I don't have a dual-core processor but I do have two 3 GHz Pentium-4 processors. Is there a setting I should be experimenting with for this?

You need to remove the ; infront of ProcessAffinityMask.

ProcessAffinityMask=1 use Core 1
2 use Core 2
3 use Core 1&2
4 use Core 3
8 use Core 4
15 use Core 1,2,3&4

If you put ; back infront of ProcessAffinityMask the system chooses it self what core(s) to run the game on.

(Bit confusing as your system names Core 1 as 0 and so on)

Curiouser and curiouser. I tried removing the ; and changing the setting to 3. IL2 1946 seems to load faster and any particular mission loads faster. The frame rate seems to have had no significant change, though.

It makes me really wonder if it has any effect with two processors? I changed , changed it back, and then changed it again, restarting the game each time. I think I will leave it at 3, as faster loading of IL2 and the missions is a worthwhile improvement.

I am handicapping myself a bit because I still have Firefox, Thunderbird, Guncam, Yahoo Messenger, and a few smaller things running. I could certainly improve performance is I shut everything else down, but things are adequate as it is.

If you set it to run on both cores it might load quicker but with stuff running in the background you dont really want it to use the same core as the apliactions because this will decrease game performance or might give a stutter once in a while wich is no good if your on someones tail tyrying to shoot him.

Hmmm, good point. But I really should quit the other applications when I am looking for best performance. Now that you mention it, I have seen the very small stutter, like a tiny hesitation now and then. But it is so small and quick that it doesn't really affect me.

But, as you say, a little faster loading isn't that big a deal one way or the other.

Thanks for the input.

You aren't going to see anything shocking like your frame rates double or anything like that. IL-2 was written as a single threaded application (as were and are most games) so it can't utilize the potential of having two processors fully. You may get (I did) small micro stuttering and reduced FPS in certain places when trying to use two CPUs as the two are switching back and forth trying to offload the task to each other which ends up with reduced performance.

I would say just try 0, 1, and 2 and see what provides the best performance.

The person here who told me to use the second core told me to put =2, and I did, and it improved the game.

It didn't hugely help my frame rate but it made the game noticeably smoother and hugely reduced a lot of random stuttering that I was getting. Now I have 2xAA and vysync on; before I couldn't put these on without visible drops in frame rate.

I don't know what =2 does exactly but it definitely was a big boost for me.

Being mentally retarded, I now see how you get IL-2 to favor a core or both cores, or let Windows decide. But how do you control which core the other background processes run on?? For example can I get FRAPS and IL-2 Stab to run on one core while '46 runs on another?
