Hello all!
I was wondering how fast my internet should be for playing online.
I have V4.08 and a 30 kbps connection.

P.S
What do I do if the AI comes to my house, steals my game disc and runs off out climbing my 109 in an i-16?

Wow, I have 48 mbps

I can answer your second question, let the AI have the disk becuase you dont need it once you instaled the game.

Really?! You don't need the disk?
Hmm... Maybe I can give it to a friend so that he can play online.
But can I play with such a slow speed?

bps are bits per second and since they're over a serial line there are bits used just to make sure the message
isn't error-laden. With a serial line you usually transmit 10 bits per 8 bit data byte not counting any data
compression. It's a good rule of thumb to divide by 10 to get bytes per second, a 52k dialup on downloads is
usually good for about 5k/sec since you almost never got the full rate.

You can spot check your throughput on a long download just watching the byte rate on a download manager or
you can use the speed tests at DSLREPORTS here.

When people take a plane out to see what it can do they really find what they can do with it.

30 kbps should be OK to play online.
You should even be able to host a 2 player game.

It will not be as smooth as a broadband connection, and 32 player games might give some problems, although I suspect that will be OK too.

Lower the Speed setting in the [Net] section of conf.ini to something like 4000.

[NET]
speed=4000

This will insure smaller packets are send easing load on your line and on the host.

A wide area WiFi network is no good to play games on. It has very high ping (reaction time) just like satellite internet. Maybe you should build a mini Eiffel tower with a high-speed radio-beam connection to a nearby town like Blairgowry did. It will be costly, but it's the only practical solution that works for gaming in a remote area. Even ADSL 2+ will loose a lot of speed if distance is more than 1.5 km.
Tell the gov. beancounters your country needs a fiber optic network. You should have no problems then with 100M/100M Big Grin

Come to think of it, the situation is worse than you think. 42 kbps is your download speed. It's the upload speed that counts however. That's more likely to be in the 22 kbps range.

WiFi is not to good for online play, usualy you get a lot of lag or small delays, you might not notice it but others might see you "warping" at times.

If you have the US release disk. Everywhere else in the world (except maybe Russia, I'm not sure) there is copy protection that requires the disk to be in the drive to play.

I have no choice but to use wireless. But then again I don't play online much. I probably couldn't remember my HL pass word anyway.
