Yeah its kinda necromancy, but to avoid overposting . . . for those that actually search.

I found this out.

Hmmm I'm in the same boat, going for a 3.66 pentium core duo 2.

I got 4 gig of ram already that can fit the motherboard, which is great . . . but also sux b/c xp 32 sp2 and beyond only sees 3 gigs of ram (technically).

Damn Microshaft, if you put xp with sp 1 you can use all 4 but due to some driver issue instead of figuring out (or forcing you to buy Server 03 since they figured 4 gigs was "impossible on a home machine" ) they decided to set the limit to 3 gigs and use 1 gig or so for PCI etc . . . any case that is a discussion in itself.

Since at work our vista 32 and 64 test machine hates IL-2 (and its the only game I care about) i'll use XP. I mean our IT guy got it to work but said "just avoid vista".

And I'm not support Microsoft's "mistake." by buying vista 64. I have XP pro already.

So I'll probably see if the rig will work with 4 gig and if XP craps, then pull one stick and just use 2 g's with XP. or go with the 3 gig ram combo

Game actualy runs better under Vista/Windows 7 (especialy 64 bit versions)

32 bit (XP) never showed 4GB of RAM even with out SP1, and seriously XP was a far greather mess before SP1 than Vista at any stage.

Also 32 bit (XP) can only asign 2GB maximim to an aplication (game) so theres not really much point in sticking in more than 2GB for this game under XP.

Game runs fine here under XP 32 bit, Vista 32 bit (Laptop) and Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit, only isue is with the anti-piracy software, but thats easy to fix by browsing the disk and running the "A.exe" to install the game.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, Foxconn nForce 590 SLI, 4x OCZ 2048MB EPP DDR2-800, 2x Club3D GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Be-Quiet 700 Watt Straight Power, Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Ok, there are a few misconceptions and mistakes in your post. 1, Il2 1946 IS compatible with Vista and windows 7 32 and 64bit, it just takes a little tweaking to run, no big deal. 2, It is NOT Microsoft's fault that XP cannot use 4gigs of RAM, that is the nature of 32bit computing, it is a mathematical limit, not a Microsoft limit. 3, there is NOTHING wrong with Vista and if your IT guy said to avoid it then he doesn't know what he's going. 4, XP will work with any amount of ram installed, it just won't use more than 2.5-3.5g of it. I suggest you get rid of XP and go straight for Windows 7 64bit. Windows 7 is simply the best OS Microsoft has ever released.

I agree completely with the IT guy. Vista sucks bigtime. Even M$ had to realize that in the end and developed W7. Windows never was a good operating system. ever. It is no coincidence the vast majority of servers run a Linux flavour OS.

Don't stare yourself blind on the amount of RAM available to applications. The number of applications that need more than 2GB are VERY few.
suppose: you have a system that will let an application use 1000000 GB RAM. Will it use that amount? NO.
I agree in skipping Vista and moving to Windows 7 64bit next month. Even though I have MUCH more confidence in Linux. The simple facts of life are manufacturers are only considering Windows when developing drivers and programs. It will take several years for them to adjust their course
For the time we're stuck with M$ crapware.

IL-2 1946 will run faster on Ubuntu Linux under Wine than it runs on any windows OS.

A 64 bit OS is attractive because it gives access to the 64 bit instructions that are not used by 32bit applications. You need a 64bit application as well as a 64bit OS. The extra RAM is only of interest to very large servers and professional applications like CAD/CAM software. If you have an application that really wants more than 2GB RAM it is time to open your eyes and look around for another program. Chances are good you are using a huge bloatware and there is something better, faster and cheaper around.

Linux will gain in the user market only when it is user friendly. Sorry, I'm not an MS fanboy but Linux is NOT ready for prime time yet. Of course linux is used on servers more than other OS's, because it's very good at it, but that has nothing to do whatsoever with how it runs on a home computer. MS did not develop 7 because they knew Vista sucked, they always planned on it. Windows XP was the exception, not the rule, windows 95 was a good OS for the time but they still developed Windows 98. Windows is a great operating system, don't believe all the propaganda out there. Linux is great too, but not for the home user.

As for RAM, no, most apps don't use more than 2gb (though there are a lot of games that are starting to push 3gb or more), but some people do this thing called multitasking, I'm sure you've heard of it. If you have one app you're running that uses 1.5gb, and another app that uses 1gb, and another that uses 2gb, how much ram do you think you'll need to maintain performance?

And while we're attempting to be constructive, can you tell me exactly why vista "sucks big time"?

Most people who hate on Vista have probably never used it and just believe what they read in a news story or saw in a random message board post. I'm no M$ fanboy either but the hate for Vista is ridiculous. I've used it for almost 2 years now and it's been perfectly fine for gaming and everything else. A few games won't play on it but they are really old and don't work because the game designers didn't know anything about Vista in 2002 or whatever. I've never had any major or frequent crashes--from my experience it's a lot more stable than XP, which crashed on me a lot on an old computer.

The main problem with Vista is that visiaully and in terms of applications it is almost exactly like XP and doesn't have enough features to make it worth upgrading to if you already have XP and are happy with it. But 64-bit Vista is really good to me, and from what I have heard, 64-bit XP is really buggy (though I've never used it, so I can't say from first-hand experience).

In any case Windows7 is right around the corner and anyone who wants to upgrade from XP or who needs a new computer might as well wait for it.
