Gents,

The timing on my build is a bit off. It will be completed before Windows 7 comes out sometime between August and December ... or two weeks after that. So, to utilize my 6 gigs of memory, should I buy Vista Home Premium 64bit or Windows XP x64?

99.9% of my computer gaming is IL2.

XP x64:
- avoids the whole ~adjust Vista to IL2~ thing,
- familiar with XP,
- difficulty finding drivers, Windows support waning on this OS,
- older games (IL2???) and equipment may not work well/at all.

Vista HP x64:
- better support,
- uhhh ... what else?

Thanks for your help,

=FI=Falcon

Get Vista, there is no reason for anyone with xp to upgrade but there is no reason not to get vista if you need x64. You summed it up pretty well, Vista has much better driver support these days than XP x64. With SP1 and now SP2 right around the corner Vista is a very good OS despite the anti-vista bandwagon.

Vista... XP-64 is a waste... there are certain things that run fine in Vista.. fine in XP.. but not in XP-64.. like LightScribe for one... XP-64 was a jedi mind trick that Microsoft played on the polulace.. I wont fall for that again.. I dont even plan to get Vista.. I am waiting for Win7 then I will upgrade again.. but if I were upgrading today and wanted a new OS.. I'd bite the bullet and go with Vista.

Yeah Il-2 runs fine on Vista. It best if you put the Il-2 folder outside the Program Files so that it doesn't hide all your FMB mission files and config files in an obscure hidden folder.

If you turn off the "UAC" in vista, it is almost like using windows XP. Once I disabled UAC, never again have I had an issue with anything regarding IL2, that incudes patching, mods, editing config files, utilities, like MAT Manager, Hardball, and Hyperlobby to name a few. Not one single problem.

As for older games I have running,
Warzone 2100,
Silent Hunter 3,
Shogun: Total War,
All the Combat Mission games.

Just ensure all non 64 bit software is installed in the program files(x86)folder

IL2, for me anyways has been free of porblems since disabling UAC on Vista64 sp1.

Vista..

I ran XP64 and thought it was the dogs dangly bits, until I started getting IO errors and disk corruption.

Suspected hardware (drives checked out so finger pointed accusingly at DFI Motherboard IO system) tried to raise an RMA with DFI, they refused because I was using XP 64 and I quote the email here:
quote:
Given that info I do not suspect an issue with the board. The more likely issue is with Win XP 64 bit. When it comes to this OS I can only say don't use it. It is best described as incomplete. I consider it as a crossover OS between Win XP 32 bit and Win Vista. Most hardware makers choose not to put all their time and effort into making perfect drivers for such an OS as the Vista was just around the corner at the time.

hard to argue against that reasoning since running Vista64 has 'cure' the issues so far..

If you like a challenge you can download a trial of server 2008 and convert that to a workstation OS, it's very Vista like too when tweaked..and you get 240 days trial time which could be enough for Windows 7 to arrive.

At this point, it really all depends on which OS you already have.

If you already have a copy of XP 32 bit, and would have to buy either of the 64 bit OSs that you are thinking of using, my advice would be DON'T!

With Win 7 'just around the corner' it would be a waste of $$ to buy an OS that you would only be using for less than a year.

I'd put XP 32 bit on it until Win 7 is available.

If you have TrackIR 1 or 2, note that it isn't supported by NP, had to go to newest TrackIR! Also I have problem when using Alt+Tab, it just drops to desktop, but apart from those have no issues with Vista x64.

Thanks all.

I've decided to get Vista 64 and upgrade when Seven arrives. My new build will be finished around June and then I'll bite the bullet and upgrade. I think I have the newest TIR; v4?

Now, about my HD, GPU and motherboard ...

You know, the Release Candidate for windows 7 should be available to the public by the time you finish the rig, you could run the RC until the final version is available for purchase. I've been running the beta for some time and even the beta could be used for a full time OS, the RC should be just fine.

Windows 7 wont be out till Februari 2010, thats still some time away.

So Vista 64 bit would be a good choice and than Upgrade it to Windows 7 wen it comes out if you like it.

It just runs perfectly sweet here, got and had more problems with XP than with Vista.

i've been using vista x64 for about 8 months now... i can't see any possible arguement (from my own experience) for going with any other OS

no compatability problems at all, everything from crysis to diablo II works with no issues
its rock solid, has never crashed (games sometimes crash due to bugs etc but windows is always fine, and remains calm through the whole thing!)

not had any "UAC" issues, other than sometimes having to click on an extra dialogue box for certain things, but this doesn't bother me, as it only takes a fraction of a second

also i have 4gb ram, so having vista 64 actually allows me to make use of it

The RC does not expire for a year, the retail version will be out well before the RC expires.

Well,

I thought my build would be finished by June, but now it looks more like August. That means that 7's RC might be a good OS for me.

I have no idea how this works. Can I DL the RC into a brand-spankin' new computer and use it as the sole OS until the retail version comes out?

I'm reading in some of the scattered techy forums that 7 has it's problems too. Anyone have any good actual info about it?

Thanks,

Falcon

Lots of stuff wrong with Windows 7 RC1...

I sugest you do some serious research online if your concidering to use it (RC1) as your only OS (wich is not recomended if its your main PC)

I seem to remember something about people who buy Vista like from around June will get a free upgrade to Windows 7, but you'd want to confirm that from other sources.

And I've been using Vista 64-bit for a few months and it's completely fine. It's noticeably faster by a bit than Vista 32-bit though I do have more RAM than my old computer plus an i7.

If you buy a PC with in a month of release of Windows 7 you get a free upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 from the manufacturer.
Like with XP wen Vista came out you probably get a card for a free upgrade to Windows 7 but these are only valid if your system was build by a officail (MS) system builder, its not valid if you build your own rig.

Since writing the original entry concerning this, I decided to investigate a bit more thoroughly.
I have made a complete reinstall of 4.07 (which is from the dvd 1946), and only updated to 4.08m, this wouldn't start, just showed a spinning cd icon, so I then used the il2fb.exe file from 4.08 to 4.09 switcher (4.33 mb), then ran game with one quick mission (on Okinawa map), then ran a second quick mission on a different map (Crimea), and it crashed to desktop still.
A warning message came up, that the firewall was blocking il2.exe, so I had it changed to unblock. (Had to ALT+TAB between windows, as mouse was absent till I got focus on the alert message).

Apart from this, there are no mods installed, and this didn't always happen to me. I have been updating Vista x64 since I got it, and can only think something has been changed during that time, with the updates. As i said originally, I have never been able to ALT+TAB from iL2, and cannot take screengrabs (noticed someone else had this problem too). The thing I find strange is that noone else seems to have these problems, surely I can't be the only one with Vista x64 copping these issues?

Also just noticed, the 4.07 install just shows the spinning cd icon, and doesn't play, with the dvd in the drive, as well.

Also noticed a lot of missions now freezing up, near end of mission, or when you hit apply, forcing a re-run of mission. Notice that graphics get "jittery" at this time. Memory is 6gb ddr3, so shouldn't be the cause.

Tried all the different process affinity mask settings, yesterday just used ; to comment it out, which seemed to be least problematic of them all, but will need more playtesting.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

First, since going to Vista x64, I haven't ever been able to use ALT+TAB to swap to other programs, while playing iL2 Sturmovik, as it just drops me out to desktop, as though the program had ended, also after I go to change from one map to another in QMB and Single missions, also when a campaign calls a video up, or a new map.

When it drops you out, it makes all the noises as if the mission is starting IE engine sound, and the icon is in the taskbar, but you need to press ALT+TAB to get the mouse to focus, then iL2 is gone from taskbar. You then need to reload iL2 again to play another mission. This doesn't happen if you just hit "refly" or change aircraft, but cannot change the map. Same with single missions, you can replay same mission over and over, and other missions so long as the map doesn't change. This is getting to be very annoying, as you can imagine.

Any ideas about this, and maybe a solution to fix it? My Vista version has been upgraded by Windows Update to latest updates as of 4--5-2009.

Thanks in advance.

Here is content of one of many files that are generated each time you ALT+TAB out of iL2, a flight simulation game. they have the name "hs_err_pid1760", each with a unique number, not all 1760.
