I find using the gamepad easier, and more 'fightable', (yes I know, I should have a stick, but in the current monetary...)
Is there a way to increase the active area of the stick(s) control? What I mean is full movement ingame (irrespective of altered 'input settings') occurs with the actual analogue stick(s) at about half of its/their travel range in all directions. It should be possible to change the conf.ini somehow & somehwere to enable me to use more of my stick area; and thus giving me 'smoother' and more subtle contol, as I have done this in other games (RACER 5.0F, Lotus Racer, WSB, & CFS3 etc). Any help would be appreiciated. |

I used a gamepad myself at one time, and though a stick is definitely better, it was ok for a beginner, and if you are strapped for cash, quite usable.
As to whether you can match the full physical movement range with full control movement, this will depend on how the gamepad works, and from what I can recall wasn't much of a problem with mine - I've still got it, as I use it as a second controller sometimes. The first thing to look at is what the stick does in the Windows Game Controllers setup utility (In the Control Panel in XP). My Saitek P2600 Rumble Force pad seems to show full 'software' range with about 3/4 stick movement, which is probably not ideal, but limiting the software range by the physical stick movement can sometimes cause problems when the stick is in a corner. If you are getting the 100% response at 50% stick movement, I don't think there is much you can do with IL-2 configuration that might change it. It is just possible that there may be a way to adjust this with software provided with the gamepad, but quite likely it is a hardware thing, and the pad won't measure beyond the current angles. You don't say what type of gamepad you are using. If you let us know the make and model that might help. |

Are you saying the sticks are too sensitive or not sensitive enough? Seems like you should just be able to edit the sensitivity settings, start with 0 at the left side and 100 at the right and have it slowly increase, and keep editing it and trying it out until you get response you like.
There is a utility that lets you edit the joystick sensitivity settings from the desktop that is a bit easier to use than the in-game setup, but for the life or me I can't remember the name. When I first got this game I used a 360 gamepad and it worked ok, it was best for making large swooping maneuvers, but for precise controls you need to get shots in on your enemy, it was pretty lousy. Eventually I got a Logitech 3D Pro stick ($25) and haven't looked back--it's way better for aiming, though it took a while to get used to it. ----------------- Farewell to freedom in the Adriatic and to the days of wild abandon. Ah, nope I was misunderstood, no biggie, what I meant is...
with the input/senstivity setting as normal, untouched, that full control movement ingame is reached at half stick movement in real life. And I was wondering if there is a line in the conf.ini file to change the limit/range/distance/area, so that I can alter that line to get close to full IRL stick movement to full ingame movement. I have spent ages since with the sensitivty, and really they dont affect much in this respect. But I have spent some time getting them as good as can be, but now I am looking for a better more direct solution in the conf.ini file. |

Oops, sorry Razor - realised you gave the model in the topic - does it come with any setup software?

I still don't get what you mean by this, is it too sensitive or not sensitive enough? The only thing you can do is change the sensitivity settings in the game. On my gamepad, setting it from 0 to 100 and curving gradually upwards in value worked for me. Or like Andy says, if you have some software for your gamepad, you might be able to use it to edit the stick sensitivity. Here is Il-2 JoyControl, the program I was talking about--it's a bit easier way to change your Il-2 sensitivity settings. http://mission4today.com/index...file=details&id=1021 ----------------- Farewell to freedom in the Adriatic and to the days of wild abandon. Also what sensitivity settings are you using now in Il-2?

Il2 cannot change the input it is given, if the gamepad is giving 100% ingame movement when only 50% physical movement is made, then it is an issue with the gamepad or windows, not il2. In Il2 you can adjust the input curve, but if you have already adjusted the curve so it is a gradual rise up to the last value of 100% and this is still happening then il2 is being given the signal of 100% deflection by windows/the stick itself, if you follow me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

Thanks for all your suggestions, it would be a Windows/Gamestop Driver problem; budget pad, no 'specific drivers', no product support, just plug and play cheapness.
Oh well, you get what you pay for which is then available. The generic winsows 'gamepad' properties/claibration tool only resets/calibrates/re-centers the sticks as such, not adjust the range. Thanks again guys, just thought I'd ask on the off chance. |

You did try adjusting the Controler settings in game? adjusting the sliders for Yaw, Pitch and Roll and Senstivety and Deadzone etc?
btw a Saitek Cyborg Evo Force joystick doesnt cost to much, and its a great stick. I used a Logitech Wingman Rumblepad (1), model with Throttle Slider above the shoulder button, wich i used for years to play this game (and others) until it was completly worn out. They did not sell it anymore and no other controlers had a Throttle Slider so i bought a stick, took me a little while to get used to and didnt like it at first, but once i got used to it after a little while of flying i loved it, its so much better to controle the planes in this game. Again I'd recommend the Logitech 3D Extreme Pro, it was $25 USD for me which isn't too pricy, and it's worked really well for me for several months so far and doesn't feel like a cheap piece of flimsy garbage (yet).
Or if you have any other gamepads around, maybe try them. ----------------- Farewell to freedom in the Adriatic and to the days of wild abandon. Check out my BRAND NEW campaign, "The Pirate Menace" Also check out my old Air Pirates campaigns! Air Pirates Part One Air Pirates Part Two |

NDS; I have already got my sensitivity and movement ration settings sorted to best, with some deadbanding (no more than 3 'clicks') and filtering/time delaying on some axis's to smooth and allow for changing grip, button pushing and involuntary stick movements.
All; Incedently I already have a 'Logic 3 Pro', but I don't use it after I tried it on another flight sim, and after a while, it would make my plane tumble around uncontrolably; as if it was like an anologue pad, with the anologue function being swithced on and off like a 'rapid fire' function. When I've tested it since back in 1946, its ok, but I currently preffer the 'all to hand or finger' buttons & the control bindings to them since I havent got the budget to get a proper Stick, HOTAS and Rudder set up that would allow better and more intuative button/key bindings (Better 'Fight-ability'). |

You dont need to buy one with pedals...
They just stopt making the Saitek Cyborg evo Force Feedback Joystick but there still easy to get a a good store, price is around 50 Euro's. If you want a good joypad for this game maybe you can find a Logitech Rumblepad (model with Throttle Slider) on Ebay Here's a bit of a review of it with pictures: http://www2.hardwarezone.com/a...p?cid=12&id=235&pg=2 AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, Foxconn nForce 590 SLI, 4x OCZ 2048MB EPP DDR2-800, 2x Club3D GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Be-Quiet 700 Watt Straight Power, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit |

I'm not sure what you mean, maybe you have a force feedback version that I don't have. I've never had a problem with my Logitech stick other than that it took me a while to get used to it--it really requires much more careful control than a gamepad, but with practice it just gives you better control and especially is better for aiming at the enemy.
Actually what I do is hold my flight stick with my right hand, and with my left hand I hold my Xbox 360 gamepad which I've used xpadder with to emulate the mouse and keyboard--I use its left analog stick to emulate the mouse and look around the cockpit, and the buttons on it to do stuff like throttle and release chocks and so on. Alternatively you could use a mouse with a lot of buttons, but those can be pricy. ----------------- Farewell to freedom in the Adriatic and to the days of wild abandon. It's only in the last few years that I've been flying in Il2 on the 'pad' before I have always used a stick ever since I got my 1st original version in 2003. Sticks are certainly more accurate, smoother and require more 'finese'.
Its not FF'ed, and no 'twist' rudder (partially why I 'pad' about. Its just a cheap (£20) stick from maplin - I once had a £30 Saitek with twist rudder, that I had to add 'packing' to the rudder pointometer-to-stick-tab to make the rudder accurate - to was produced 'loose fit'. But it was cheapier mad than my current one. Mmm, the xpadder thing sounds extremely good, to reverse my 'pad' addiction, would it be available from CNET, or could you supply a reputable safe link to a dl of it Ba5? |

Xpadder used to be free but unfortunately I think now you have to pay to download it. Joy2Key is another program that does the same thing, and there are probably other mouse/keyboard emulation programs. They really are handy.
