I installed new ATI Drivers (9.8 legacy for WinXP) for my GPU. Then tried running 1946 - the game's interface loads fine but none of the maps will load at all when trying to view a replay or start a career/mission.

Removed 1946 and made a fresh installation. First tried booting up the stock 1946 out of the box. Again, the game's interface loads fine but none of the maps will not load at all when trying to view a replay or start a career/mission. Installed the new 4.09 patch with skins - now the game CTDs when 5% shows on the initial splash screen.

To fix the 5% issue:
Copy files mg_snd.dll and mg_snd_se.dll from the 4.08m patch to the folder where the game is installed.
+ Check in the properties of the 1946 icon / the properties of il2fb.exe whether the 'Compatibility' has been checked (like set to 'Windows 95'.) If so, uncheck and retry.

Sorry, that didn't work.

I always run Catalyst AI at Standard, and Compatibility mode is unchecked at the shortcut and the .exe itself. I copied the two .dlls to the game's root folder, but I'm still getting the CTD at 5%. BTW, the .dlls (mg_snd.dll and mg_snd_sse.dll) were located in the 409b1m patch; I could see no .dlls in the 408m patch.

I reinstalled the previous drivers but I'm still getting this issue. Kinda scratching my head about this one...

You say you get a CTD at 5% after installing 4.09, did you install 4.08 first?

After reinstalling 1946, I ran it without any patches. The game's interface loaded fine but it crashes back to the main menu when I try to view replays, view objects, or start a mission; something about not being able to load a map .dll.

I then installed the new 4.09 patch (I skipped the 4.08 patch and the 4.09 betas). Now the game simply CTDs at 5% on the initial splash screen.

@ FoolTrottel: Good eye! I don't know how long its been like that, and I run the game in windowed mode, so I never noticed it.

EDIT: After reading my last post it struck me that I should remove the game again, reinstall it, install the 4.08 patch this time, then install the 4.09 patch. I don't know if that will help, but it certainly can't hurt...

...oh, and to fix that 1680 x 1030 thing...

Yeah, 4.08 is required. As for the crashing thing with map errors, set Catalyst AI to standard or off.
