What anti Viris soft ware is the best and Why?
I recently mis-diagnosed a bad power supply so I had some extra parts and want to build a game server. I am curintly on 56K modom so I am not worred about viris's I do have accses to high speed but no anti viris soft ware. The computer is almost done. My question is what anti viris software do you use and how come. And one more thing does it work. Free is OK if it works. Cost may be a facter. Let me know if you want specs on the server. There's no reason why you can't get a virus when using a dial-up modem: it's perfectly possible to pick up some real nasties, especially diallers. You won't notice them until your next phone bill comes in, possibly x10 or x20 the normal amount! Get an AV. My personal choice is Avira, free version or paid. It provides excellent protection, I've used it for over 12 years. B |

I'm going on my second year using Kaspersky Internet Security, and I'm real happy with it. You have to buy it, but its not that much. My subscription is up in a few months, and I was able to find the newest version on sale for $20CAD. Good thing about this program is that you can install it on 3 PCs, so what you pay is worth it for a good program I guess.

I used AVG. Often though I have it completely switched off. Sensible use of the internet is your best way of avoiding viruses.

I use CA or "Computer Associates" suite which includes firewall, anti-spyware and anti-viral protection. I use it because it comes free with my RoadRunner high speed internet service. So far, so good.

You might want to check out this article: http://www.techspot.com/news/3...luding-symantec.html CA failed their tests by missing over 960 viruses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

Thanks That was exactly what I needed. With so many on the market it is difficult to make the right choice and somtimes a real paine to fix when the wrong choice is made. Very useful site Bookmarked and saved Thanks again |

ESET Smart Security Suite here, although I also use some other Firewalls at the same time. Everything is on 24/7.
ESET NOD32 (the AV part of the suite) holds the record for most VB100 awards. VB100 awards are issued by virus Bulletin. It's a test suite for AV software. Both detected and false-positives are taken into account. The tests are held several times per year. Virus Bulletin is independent of AV companies. |

Wow, guess I'm getting what I'm NOT paying for. Hmm when I build a new rig after Win7 I'll probably switch to one that works. Or I might wait to build a rig after USB3 comes out. Da Worfster |

Norton Internet Securety 2009 and 2010 Beta
Hardly uses any system resourses anymore, and it will not run updates or scans if your working/playing on the computer, it waits till your inactive for a few minutes with that, if you than get back to the computer touching any key or mouse is enough to stop it. Really love it. You know you have a good virus scanner when it rarely or never finds anything. One trick of some of the so-called good anti-virus companies is to give you lots of false positives on purpose, with the intent of tricking you into thinking it found lots of nasty viruses.
I use F-Secure and it hardly ever finds anything, but when it does I can feel assured it's the real thing and not a phoney false. There are also scanners that get lots of legitimate false positives that are not done on purpose to fool you. But that's not so good either, when it's possibly a needed system file that it "thinks" is a virus but isn't. F-Secure is the real deal and it is one of the few that has a proven system to find rootkit viruses. But no matter how good a scanner is at finding rootkits, you still have to do an offline scan to find them all. I do this by taking my notebook hard disk out and scanning it with my desktop. And visa-versa of course. Anyone else use F-Secure? |

I don't use any. But I don't browse dodgy web sites, don't do email or keep personal information on windows, and don't install a bunch of crap that most family computers seem infested by either.
Having a firewall in the router, that I know how to use, should be helping a bit too. ---------------------------------- Flying online as 453_Whittle E8400 @3.8, 9800gtx+ Phenom II X4 B50 @ 3.4 Uni-joint / hall effect sensor stick guide: http://www.jpfiles.com/hardware/uni_stick.pdf |
