If you haven't already found it, there is a link in the Useful Links & Information sticky and the very same thread in the middle of the front page of the Community Help forum that addresses issues between 1946 & Vista 54-bit.

thank you for the response. i tried all the suggested solutions in these pages (installing in alternative folder, installing dx9.0c, running in compatibility with previous windows versions, reinstalling drivers, installing different drivers, etc). i still get the same message when using directx, and when i use open gl the disk spins but then nothing appears (no start-up screen). i have a stand alone copy of pacific fighters which works fine, so i am cluless why 1946 doesn't work. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Normally I'd PM you about this but frankly we all know what the problem is here and I'm tired of going out of my way to help people out. It's either one of two problems, either you have used the wrong patches, or *****

Thanks for the edit FT, sometimes I forget that it's not just us in the il2 community who run this place, I know most of us would understand where I'm coming from but then you guys have bosses too who may not be in the same boat Wink.

luther1985, try to double check your patch order and if that doesn't help post back here.

sorry to be dim but i wasn't aware il-2 1946 required patches to work with vista 64-bit. i thought only the pacific fighters standalone cd required patches to run , but not the il-2 1946 dvd game. (apologies, new to pc gaming, formally xbox player!).

Any update to a game that is released for free is called patch, it may be new content, or it may just be bug fixes and such. 1946 is version 4.07m out of the box, then there is patch 4.08m.

Funny, I ran a full system search of all my hard drives for d3d8.dll
and came up empty.
I have a multi boot computer
with both versions of Vista and two versions of XP.

Anyone searching note, do not
copy and paste his information as he has it as a D11(D eleven) not a DLL.

After making a fool of myself the file is in all Windows
system folders as you might expect.

I looked in my Vista64 debug notes and found that I also had the
bug, copied the file from XP64 to the
system32 and systemWOW64 folders etc.

Few run IL-2 1946 in the real world and I
have not had to do this for anyone but myself.

And I have run 1946 in DX D3D mode.
Frame rates are great, visually it is lame.
OGL seems to be what 1946 is written for.

I also am confounded by Vista and Il2 1946, I have followed B1SPEAR's directions, as well as downloading (and installing as per spear's instructions) 4.08m and all I receive for my efforts is the spinning disk.

I just switched to a hot new machine runing vista64 with a fresh install.

If I use DirectX, it asks for d3d8.dll, and using OpenGL, the program initializes and drops out of Task manager at about 70,000k memory usage.

I have dl'd the d3d8 file and added to the sys 32 folder as well as syswow64.

Now Setup can not find DX8, (I have also installed dx9c) could that be my problem?

Or is there something simple that this ham fisted monkey-mechanic has overlooked?

*I have also searched other forums, and it was mentioned that after install and merge, you needed to reboot the computer "before" trying to run. Would that gum up the works, and do I need to Un-install / Re-install+merge then reboot before trying to run program.

Urufu, I understand your frustration. But I have the exact same problem as a172Driver, and if you have a solution to provide, please do not PM, post it here so everybody can benefit of it.

Game is running on my laptop, Vista 32bits. But not on my new PC, vista 64bits. Same spinning disk then silently closing. Frown

I have read and apply everything you posted on other threads, also which other people posted on other forums. Still have that problem, also after installing 4.08m

I'm having sound issues at the moment.
Looking straight forward i can't hear the engines but turning the view around and they are back. I can't here any sounds in the menus as well.
Soundcard is a Creative X-fi Extreme Audio, running with Vista Ultimate 64.
Any ideas?
