If anybody could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I have totally clean install of Pacific Fighters, patched to 4.01.

I can only run the game in DX, because if I set the game to run in OpenGL, all I get is a jumbled mass of colours. The game is running - you can see the outline of things - but the screen looks like rainbow vomit.

The bigger problem with DX is that when I am on a campaign, in any decent dogfight, my fps drops to about 2 or 3 - that right, 2 or 3 fps - and even that is on Very Low graphics setting.

Hi,

Go Start/ Run/ type dxdiag in the box/ Enter. Let the application run until the progress bar is filled, then click Save All Information. Save the .txt file to desktop and then open it. Copy the whole contents and Paste into your reply here.

One item does stand out. The very latest drivers may not be suitable for your card. Someone who uses nVidia graphics will be along in a while and tell you the optimum drivers to use.

OK, thanks for that. There is an issue that I recognise regarding your sound device settings. You have two devices both operating at "Full". This will cause some problems with IL2. Operating a USB headset along with the onboard sound is theoretically OK (as in, USB for a comms program and speakers for the gamesound), but you will need to adjust by lowering the Sound hardware acceleration setting for BOTH devices. This can be done using the dxdiag application that you just used.

Run it again, this time click on the (2) Sound tabs in turn. In each case you will see a horizontal slider that can be adjusted. Set both to Standard and retest your game. If that doesn't help try setting both to Basic and retest. This won't necessarily help with the OpenGL problem, but it should give you a better framerate in DirectX (and OGL if we can get it running).

I'm not au fait with nVidia or Intel, though I can say that neither your CPU or your graphics card are ideal. The Celeron is not really a gaming processor (due to its architecture and its small L2 cache) and the 6600LE is never going to run Perfect settings efficiently. I'm sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings

An upgrade to a Pentium IV cpu and a newer graphics card would be advisable if you really want to get the benefit of this very processor-intensive game. First though, it would be good to take a closer look at your in-game settings. To enable this we need to see the content of your configuration file.

Go to the game's root folder on your hard drive and open it. Look for an .ini file called conf and open it with Notepad. Be careful not to change anything at present; just open it and Copy & Paste the contents here....

Looks like I fixed the problem. I wiped all nVidia drivers and went back to the OOTB vanilla driver re-install.

Guess what? OpenGL now works, and I can get good, but not great frame rates on Pacific Fighters.

Really, nVidia and it "automatic updates" are doing their customers a grave disservice by encouraging updates which actually reduce the graphic quality of programs.

I'm sorry for not responding to your conf.ini settings post, I must have missed it.

You may be able to reduce any stutters/ gain a few f.p.s. by removing the AI chatter, and/or the typing that runs across the screen when the AI are talking. This is done by replacing the 0 for a 1 thus:

NoSubTitles=1
and/or
NoChatter=1

Close file and save changes

Went out with $150, came back with a 7300GT.

Game now smooth and fast.

A cheap AGP Nvidia 7900 or ATI XT1900 would do wonders for your framerate if you can pick one up cheaply off ebay?
