Hi guys, with the 2gb per app limit in Xp 32bit going to hit hard soon, I have been wondering about changing OS.

Which would you guys recommend and why? I wanted to start a good discussion about which you will change to and why once the 2gb limit starts to bite your performance.

I have a AMD 4200+ X2 and a Geforce 7900GS if that makes any difference to things Smile

Thanks.

Right now youd be mad to change ...I changed over to Vista Home Premium and went back to XP.I did several benchmarks eg Black Death Track,Super Pi etc and XP was faster every time .In fact XP with 1 gig RAM is faster than Vista with 2...Now I know one or two guys(!) will be along to defend Vista soon but the dogs on the street know the lowdown on this one ...In fact its possible that as the months pass the arguments AGAINST changing get stronger and stronger eg recent Service Packs have boosted XP greatly but hardly improved Vista at all...
Vista may be a tad more'stable' in some respects(and yes a lot of that RAM hogging crud may shut down once you get gaming etc) but with system restores taking 5 minutes plus vs 90 secs with XP being only one of lots of gripes against Vista I really really wouldnt bother.I hate it ...

I realise that mate, but there is a 2gb per application limit in XP and soon thats going to hurt perforamnce so we will be forced to change.

I wondered if they had to change, which they would choose out of those 3 that I listed?

Believe me I dont WANT to change from XP 32bit..

If you realy need to cross that 2GB limit, then go for Vista 64... for now, that's the future, the way to go...

(Mind you, if 1946 is all you use, ignore all that +2GB stuff)

I agree... and Vista is not as bad as it was initially from what I have been hearing.. a few guys here have it runniong pretty well actually. XP-64 is IMO OK... but it is an old OS.. Vista 64 is the way to go ... but for now just atay with XP until you have to change.

I got Vista 64bit on my main gaming computer, runs perfectly, no problems at all, much better than XP if you ask me, more stable and it runs most games much better.

With your AMD X2 4200+ CPU though i would first get a faster CPU like atleast a X2 5000+ before sticking Vista on there.

Did not check if IL2-1946 goes past 2GB under Vista 64 bit, only checked it with Crysis (wich i build the computer for) and it does use more if it can under Vista 64 bit.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, Foxconn nForce 590 SLI, 4x OCZ 2048MB EPP DDR2-800, 2x Club3D GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Be-Quiet 700 Watt Straight Power, Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I do actually play all the top PC games as they come out, like Crysis, BF2, IL2, COD series, Company of Heroes, Halflife2 etc etc.

So its not just for IL2. After playing Crysis, I cant help but htink that the 2gb limit is going to be hurting performance soon enough. I HATE it when games have to cache in virtual memory and you get that stuttering.

It is very possible to have a computer that benchmarks very very high, but if it has too little ram then a real world game is going to cache and cache as you are playing, of which the resultant stuttering infuriates me.

I would rather have lower eye candy than a low framerate or lots of caching in the page file. Smile

Yeah, if for whatever reason you feel the need to switch then by all means get Vista64, no reason to get anything else if you're leaving XP32.
