IL2 System optimisation
Part1 Hardware This is not meant to be definitive, it is only a list of tips that I have picked up over time. I have only put it together to help those on these forums who might need it. I welcome any additions, comments or corrections. With IL2 being so demanding there is no magic wand to make it run in perfect on all systems and unfortunately the only cure sometimes is to spend the money to upgrade however we can all try to maximise our systems and while some of these tips are basic hopefully they will be useful to someone out there. None of the information is my own work and all those sources that I have used are credited. All descriptions are for windows XP running in classic mode. WARNING- If you chose to follow any of this advice then you do so at your own risk. Please read any manuals or text very carefully and make sure that you have a full backup in case things go tits up. 1. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. You only really know that you need a backup 1 minute after you really do. I use Norton Ghost bought off E-bay as part of Systemworks . Did I mention to BACKUP? For a guide to backups and Ghost see Radified at http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_1b.htm 2. IL2 and its variants are system hungry, not just graphics hungry. It is important to make the most of all of your hardware not just the graphics card. a)Hard drive- Make sure that you have a fast hard drive e.g. 7200 rpm with at least 2mb cache. Keep this defragmented by using the system tools. (Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter). Ensure DMA is activated- (Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device manager-click on plus at IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers-select controller-right click-properties-advance settings and under transfer mode select DMA if available) Install your games on a separate partition from your windows (usually C: /) partition. This makes it easier to install/reinstall and update with patches. It keeps all the information together and gives quicker access so load times improve. You can only partition during installation or by using software such as Partition magic. If your system is really slow then a reinstall will clean out the clutter you have accumulated over the years-however make sure you have all the discs ready that you need e.g. Windows disc and ALL driver discs and patches. Backup all valuable info onto CD before you start-especially pilot career files ? See http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ and blackviper B) Memory – You can never have too much memory and ⣠for â£($ for $ ) it is the most effective upgrade you can do. Most people on the forums recommend 1 GB of memory Swop file –Virtual memory Settings. Windows uses a portion of the hard drive as added memory and under heavy usage swops info in and out of this area. There are many opinions on the best method of optimising this. I personally follow Black Vipers advice given at www.blackviper.com but others are happy to leave XP to manage this. Alternatively you could try Cacheman a software solution from www.outertech.com. c) Processor –Il2 is very processor dependant , donâ't try to run the game on anything near the minimum specs and expect to run smoothly at high frame rates-yes it will run ( I managed ok on a P3 700 ) but youâ'll just get frustrated and with every upgrade Il2 gets more demanding. Upgrade to the maximum that your motherboard will support, see your motherboard manual or visit your local upgrade store. ( Iv just bitten the bullet and bought a new box with an Athlon 3000) IMHO I would think that minimum would be nearer 2.6 Athlon or 2.2 Pentium for good results. d)Sound card –it is better to buy a separate sound card than to rely on any on- board solution, this will free up processor resources. e) Video Card –left this to last as itâ's the most intensely debated and opinionated of all. I have nothing against either ATI or NVIDIA. I have run both in the past and even old Voodoo cards. Things change so fast in this field that any opinion given today is already out of date, however to get decent rates of play then IMHO the minimum I would play this game on is a Radeon 9600 or a NVIDIA FX5900. See Toms Hardware guide for comparisons www.tomshardware.com and reviews also http://www.firingsquad.com which uses Il2 on its reviews as a test. Advice on optimisation is available on this forum under community help or try www.rage3d.com/ for ATI and http://www.nvnews.net/ or http://www.guru3d.com/ for Nvidia . Two recommended programs are rivatuner www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/ and powerstrip www.entechtaiwan.com/ for a tutorial on rivatuner which also explains the basics of 3d graphics see http://www.boogletech.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=10 f)late addition-make sure you have good cooling especially is using an Athlon processor-in UK overclockers.co.uk have good gear GUNNER Gunner get a decent signature Gunner learn to fly Gunner learn to shoot Gunner not run out of bullets just as I get on his six |

Part 2 Software BIOS The Bios boots up before Windows –see your motherboard manual on how to access it –usually Delete or F8 Key . Be very careful No BIOS means No motherboard means no PC –for the brave see http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/cpu/ Windows For general hints and tips see http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm ,the bible is Windows XP inside out by Microsoft press. Windows annoyances by Oreilly is also good.(web site is also good at www.annoyances.org/) The majority of people will be running windows XP. XP runs many background processes. You can safely disable these and improve overall performance, for full details see Blackvipers tutorials at www.blackviper.com .Check out his tutorials on services and how to optimise your system. Check what programs are running in the background especially those that start-up and fill the tray with icons on start-up. You can run msconfig (Start-run-type msconfig –go to start-up screen. There you will see a list of programs you can deactivate any by clicking the check box ,apply and reboot The only startup items you absolutely need are: ScanRegistry ,TaskMonitor, SystemTray ,LoadPowerProfile ,Your antivirus program see http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ A software solution is FSAutoStart. http://www.fs-gs.com/downloads.htm this was developed for MS flight simulator. You use it to shutdown background services and programs while running the game and it automatically restarts everything on ending the game. There are many tweak programs and tutorials on the web. Use google to search , if interested try Xteq X-setup www.xteq.com/ and see Lockergnome Tips virtualgraphicsworld.freeservers.com/lockergnome.htm MajorGeeks at www.majorgeeks.com/ and TweakXP at www.tweakxp.com/ Protection There are far too many nasties lurking on the web use the following to keep your system up to date and safe all are freeware Windows update from Microsoft Ad aware at www.lavasoftusa.com/ Pest Patrol at www.pestpatrol.com/ AVG antivirus at www.grisoft.com/ IL2 Most of the information on setting up and running this game is available on these forums so I wonâ't repeat it here. For everyone who gets a bad framerate when turning on Perfect Detail on the landscape, even though their system should be strong enough to handle it:
This might sound weird, but set your anti-aliasing to "2x" instead of "Application dependant". When thinking in a logical fashion you would think that your framerate would be even worse. However this seemed to do the trick for me and now I'm flying over beautiful oceans with pretty waves passing underneath me. Weee! /note: This worked on a P4 2.8Ghz, 512MB DRR, Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. |

In response to T O A D's excellent post on port forwarding (which helped me set up mine), I have the following observation:
I left my server running overnight, and the IP assigned to the IL2:FB server changed from .100 to .102. That's because both computers behind my router were set up on DCHP (dynamic IP addresses). Instead of changing all those IL2 server and FB Daemon config.ini files everytime the IP on your server changes, set the server up with a static IP. 1) Log in to router, and note the DHCP range. For mine, the range is 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.149. These are dynamic IPs; we want to assign a permanent IP outside of this range. I chose 198.168.1.20 as my permanent IP for the server computer. 1) On server computer, go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all. 2) Write down the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0), Default Gateway, and DNS servers. 3) Go to network connections, right click on your network, click properties, click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties. 4) Click Use the following IP address, and type in the static IP you've chosen, and the subnet mask and default gateway that you wrote down. 5. Click Use the following DNS server address and add the ones you wrote down. If you have more than two, click advanced and enter the third on the DNS tab. 6. Click Ok and Close. 7. Update all of your config files (Il2 server, FB Daemon (if using), etc) to your new static IP. 8. Log into router and forward the appropriate ports (Hyperlobby, IL2:FB, etc) to the new IP. 9. Restart server computer. Go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all - IP should be the static IP you assigned. That should do it! You now have a computer with a static IP on your network |

Optimising Network Traffic for running a game server
I thought I would share this little piece of software with the community and hope it offers as many benenfits to you as it has to me. I cant take credit for finding the program as another ubi member (lil_labbit) told me about it (all praise to him). The program is called NetPeeker and its a nice program that covers the following things: Firewall Network Usage logger Network Throttler P2P network Tool The main reason I use this program for is to see what happens when I run a game server and see if there is anything I can do to improve game play. Increase the performance and hopefully increase the numbers. I run a 11 player room (1 player does not fly - the host) so there are 10 active players. Luckily I can fly in my game through my network so that leaves 9 players in game that enter through the lobby. Whilst running the game and NetPeeker I noticed how the bandwidth was being distributed and who, if any, was getting a lions share. I was quite surprised to see some connections were averaging 3kb/s and others were trying to get as much as 8kb/s. Upon doing some client tweaks I noticed that setting a different network speed option from il2setup.exe altered the amount of bandwidth used, primarily on uploading from the server. The higher the network setting the more you got. Up until recently I've always had my speed set at ISDN level and never thought much about it. Some servers recommend this. As a client ISDN setting was allowing me to take upto 8kb/s of bandwidth from the server. Which was far too much even though I was on a LAN. Changing the setting to 56k dropped it to 3kb/s and I saw no difference in gameplay. This gave me the idea of changing the server to match my setting and check the results. I was surprised that the game play didn't suffer and the average upload to each client settled down to a very consistent 3kb/s which inturn improved ping times to be more consistent too (prior to the netpeeker pings would be very irratic when the game was full due to overloading my upload speed) I guess by now you want to know where you can find it: NetPeeker I hope the above makes sense!!!!! DX Diag error message with DX9.0c: "File DirectX.cpl is an old version and may cause problems."
DirectX.cpl is the control panel applet for DX9.0 SDK.... it resides in your system32 directory in windows - I had the same problem, ended up deleting it - now "no problems found"- I think it is for the SDK only (dunno how it got into the standard release - I suspect XP SP2...) Delete the file manually - I did and it has been fine since. Posting it here since this has cropped up a few times now... hope it helps. EDIT:- Now I know where this directX.cpl component comes from... I think... it happened when I installed the OMEGA cats... (just updated and its there again after me deleting it At least I think this is where it comes from - not sure about the standard ATI cats as I haven't installed them in a while. Hope this helps S! Please delete/move this post as You see fit.
quote: Many users have complained about the reliability and performance of the NTFS system or/and of the Windows XP platform. Fact is (and SeaFireLIV mentioned it too 1)backup everything (Duh. 2)Boot from the WinXP CD 3)Delete all FAT32 partitions on Your "C drive" 4)Let the WinXP installer create the partitions and do the formatting for you. "Cleanly formatted NTFS" and "Converted NTFS" are NOT the same. On "converted", you will get a LOT of strange behavior from games, applications, and even the WinXP itself! Bluescreens, autoresets - You know the stuff. Last thing I will mention, is that on "formatted", You get significant performance increase. One of the many reasons for this is LOW FRAGMENTATION, after formatted reinstall. Later on, when installing things, install only one thing at a time, WinXP NTFS tries to write to disk with least framentation possible. So if You've got a clean disk drive, the "later used data" are aligned from the begginig of the disk to the end with virtually no fragmentation. If you don't believe me, or want to test it yourself, try this: Have two physical disks (one removable, prefferably) install Total Commander (www.ghisler.com) copy to the second ( D: ) drive two big files (like movies for example), in one instance and watch the speed. Then try to copy those two files to another computer using Total Commander and still watch the speed. Second test will be the same, EXCEPT - when copying the files to D:, copy them simultaneously. Use TotalCMD help if You don't know how. The result will look the same - two files on D: drive. But when You try to copy those two (or any one) files back to another computer (or even yours) you will see (and hear For Your reference, here are my values: sequential copy: 19 MBpbs back and forth simultaneous copy: 6,2 MBps back and forth Some simple math: 6,2 x 2 = 12,4 19 - 12,4 = 6,6 Speed loss: 6,6 MBps - which is approx 33 percent of my total transfer rate. And one third IS a little much for me. So if using simultaneous WRITING, do not expect the defragmentation feature to work. Maybe some of You got better disks, better performance and better systems, but try this - I am confident there will be a notable difference even on Your computer. I don't have to emphasize, that the better Your disk performance is, the better for IL2... ------------------------------------ Online cheating kills online gaming! Death to all online cheating suckers! Greetings to all who fly better than me, honor to all who ate my lead. |

Spyware and more problems
Well I had to clean out a nasty little program tonight from my daughters machine. "Begin2search bar" I was at a loss, so I ran its name on google and found this. Helpful thread I found some new progs, that I had never used before and I did all the step as per article. It worked like a charm. She had quite a few problems, but not bad considering I built the machine 2 years ago and this is the first complaint I had out of her. Have you checked your Private Topics recently? Just to let those of you waiting for Pacific Fighters know that it`s best not to use this utility with PF if you do use it with FB. It will cause problems with PF later missions, especially after the 2nd mission after Pearl harbour (lots of beeping, etc). Hopefully, a new version will be made compatible with PF. I found this in the forums here Java
It works! Finally I found the answer to the many Java error messages we get in the Shift-TAB screen since the IL2FB days... In Pacific Fighters the difference is much more evident now. I hope it helps. Thanks to Mr.Steve for finding this out. |

If you get the 'Wizard was interrupted' error message at the very end of the install of PF, and if you are running XP SP2, then I suggest you uninstall SP@ from the Control Panel.
PF then installs okay. |

For those who had the "pixelized" reflection of the sun on the water, I had it because I was using the "5200..5900 - 1.x Shaders" option in the setup, tried the "6800/6600/FX/4/3" and the sea is ok now.

I hear that a lot of people have problems with crashes and lock up's and other weird problems (not only in this game).
Mostly these problems are due to wrong combination of RAM modules (some mainboards can handle it better than others). In case of any problems you might want to check the RAM memory modules if you have more than one instaled. Its always best to use identical RAM memory modules for example: Corsair 512MB DDR SDRAM 333MHz XMS line should be matched with Corsair 512MB DDR SDRAM 333MHz XMS line. Should be fine to put a 256MB with a 512MB module aslong as the rest is matched, so importand is to look at Brand, Type and Speed. Easy trick to see if this is the problem your having is to remove your RAM modules and leave the one with the bigest capacity in memory slot 1. Next time you buy some RAM make sure you get a identical set, even if the shopkeeper says its no problem that there not identical. just go somewere else were they do have a matching set. it could save you a headache and increase performance This should help a lot of you out there with various computer problems. AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, Foxconn nForce 590 SLI, 4x OCZ 2048MB EPP DDR2-800, 2x Club3D GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Be-Quiet 700 Watt Straight Power, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit |

My solution to "Can't find CD".
Yes...Yes...Yes!! At last the magic bullet I was looking for !!! It worked for me. Here are the details: 1 Call Ubi support at (919)460-9778 and pick the option that lets you talk to a person. 2.Tell them the issue (they instantly knew about the problem). 3. When they are done logging the call they will tell you to go to the support.ubi.com site and pick up the rts.dll attachment which they post there for you to download. The path is: support.ubi.com->search knowledge base->mystuff->My question. Here you click on the .dll link to download to your machine. 4. The .dll file size is 104Kb . You install it into your PF or AE/FB/PF folder by overwriting the bogus existing rts.dll that got loaded when you installed the game. 5. Vola!!! launch the game and NO CD ERROR ! Spread the word!!! --klatu Thanks everyone for all the ideas . . |

For those with Error 1610, as I was, here is how I fixed it. Computer smart guys please don't laugh
First go to windows explorer, folder options, view, and unclick hide protected folders. Move all wanted files from Il-2/AEP/PF to another drive from where you want to re-install. Do a search for the following entries on the drive you want to install the program on to. UBI IL-2 Forgotten Battles delete all entries (other than word/text documents) Go to C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information folder. Enter each numbered folder, check the *.ini file using wordpad. This file gives the installed program name. WRITE DOWN THE FOLDER NUMBER! My numbers started with: D89EF3B3 8DF712DA AEDDF5A3 Delete these folders. Go to C:\Program Files\Support.com and ensure all references to IL-2, AEP, UBI, etc are deleted. When I did a search for these items, these were not picked up. Reboot system. Next run RegVac (from www.regvac.com) registry cleaner. I found this to clean better than other registry cleaners. I went into the registry next using regedit (at your own risk of course.) Click start - run - type in regedit - enter Did searches for IL-2, Forgotten Battle, UBI, and the same folder numbers as I found earlier. Delete each entry that relates to the program. Caution using ubi search, read each entry as it may be part of another program, for example I found entries like SubItem. I did do something that I was unsure of, I deleted the following lines as they did not specify what they were related to: UBIClientDataMapperServicesClass GSServicesPlugIn I have not had any problems yet with any programs. When deleting these entries, I deleted the entire folder that referenced the above searches and the folder did not identify any other programs. Exit Regedit, no need to save changes it is done automatically. Reboot Run RegVac again Run diskcleanup from start-accessaries-system tools Run diskdefrag from start-accessaries-system tools Went into msconfig.sys by clicking start-run-typing msconfig-enter turned off all Mcafee services and windows security center from the services and startup tabs. Reboot When the change config box came back up after reboot, I clicked these back on, clicked ok BUT DID NOT REBOOT. Wait until after installing FB/AEP/PF. Install FB/AEP/PF Reboot This worked, the only thing I did differently from the other 8 times trying to install was deleting the lines UBIClient.... and GSServic.... from the registry. |

Problems uninstalling, uninstall fails and program details remain in the 'Add/Remove Programs' list.
This will also clean up the registry for the offending application(s): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 And it's free That will clean up the reg entries and the MSI installer information (including add/remove programs) and leave you ready to re-install. If the add/remove programs items remain they can be removed using tweakui: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx edit: great post Rog This message has been edited.
