I have everything working great on my 8800GTS 512 except one thing, at higher alt over water I see some really noticeable banding. First time with nvidia so not sure how to fix this, anyone familiar with this?

A bit... have seen some (8800GTS/320), but I wouldn't call it 'really noticable', but just 'noticable', if you take a close look...

What drivers?

I've seen it with the latest on the website (173 something I think) and my current 177.41. It's the same kind of banding you see in 16bit color mode but it's 32bit. I tried turning on dither but that didn't help.

Dude stay away from those Drivers!!! There not even ment for your card but for the GTX 200 series...
Those drivers are screwed up big time anyway it seems, NVidia made them with one thing in mind, boosing benchmark performance in 3Dmark Vantage to get better scores than the ATI 4800 series, but they never get these drivers aproved because there basicly nothing more as a cheat and no good for most games.
Crysis and Grid run like crap on them.

And the funny thing is some people used these NVidia drivers on ATI HD3850 and 3870 cards with the same benchmark boosting results...

The new ATI Cards also run Cuda and PhysX from NVidia perfectly fine btw...

I get the "banding effect" also with my 2 8800GT's in SLI and at verry high altitude i get a strange effect that follows the lowest band starting from the corners of the screen, altough this effect only happens wen looking at a certain angle...

In my NVidia controll panel under 3D settings the only things i set other than the High Qualety default/recomended settings is 16xQ and Overide any aplication settings under that.
(mines in dutch so not sure what yours says there)

Here is my Conf.Ini section:

Hope any of this helps.
I got 2 cards in SLI but IL2 hardly uses the second card at all, one 8800GT is more than powerfull enough for this game.

Im running the 175.19 drivers btw for Vista 64bit

Theres nothing wrong with these drivers, here's the thread to prove it: http://www.overclock.net/software-news/349699-nvidia-fo...177-41-released.html . It's not a cheat, how can enabling physx on the GPU be considered cheating when it will have the same performance boost in physx supported games? You're getting too much info from the Inquirer, lol. I guess I can live with the banding, it's not bad and only at certain angles to the sun, just didn't have this with ATI. Love the new card, runs this sim and other games very well.

Didnt get the info from the Inquirer at all...

I even think ive readed about it on Overclock.net or something like that.
But got it from a number of places.
Futuremark also comented that the benchmarks where not ment to be run that way and that they most likly would not aprove these drivers.

And the driver doesnt work corectly on your card with out a mod, you need a modified file to get it to work corectly on a 8800 or 9 series card.
My gues is your already are using the modded file as its being discussed in your link also.

It gives problems with Crysis and other games like GRID also, altough GRID it self is a problem on its own so thats nothing special.

I dont know how to get rid of the banding but its not really noticable here, the other effect you get wen looking at a certain angle at high alt above water is something thats really noticable, dont know what to discribe it as but its a kind of bright flicker in the bottem of the screen folowing an arc coming out from the corners.

Just out of curiosity..

Why did you switch from ATI to NVidia 8800GTS 512? and didnt get a ATI HD4850 card instead?

Got the 8800gts 512 second hand for $165 shipped, sold my X1950xt to a gentleman here so I needed a new card and the 4850 wasn't yet available when I purchased the 8800gts. I read of several who had improvements in grid with these drivers, if I run into any issues I'll try a few others but these do the job for now and I do plan to do some folding on the gpu and these drivers make a big difference in folding.

I've always seen that banding on water with both my current 8800gt and my prior 7800gt SLI. I never figured out how to get rid of it so it became a 'feature'. What bugs me most with my 8800gt is their defective AA of the coasts/river banks. I'm really starting to hate nvidia. Angry Blue Guy IMO nvidia is too quick to cut IQ corners solely for FPS and I've had enough!!!

Someone needs to come up with an objective IQ benchmark: maybe some hardcore image processing of frame snapshots against expected perfect results. IMO this is as important as FPS.

Actually, I quashed most of the coastline flickering, set AA to 8xQ and transparency AA to supersampling. There is still some but nowhere near as much as ATI had before they added adaptive AA to openGL in the 8.5 drivers.
