This may be a stupid question but anyway...
What it will do to the computer if I run it as administrator? Because this computer isn't only mine. This computer is also my brother's and mother's computer. That's why I asked that qestion. Please someone answer to the question. |

It shouldn't have any affect on the other accounts, it just needs to be run as administrator because of the way UAC affects some older programs.

Do I always have to be UAC off when I play Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 or can it be on?

UAC can be on, , just right-click on the il2fb.exe and click properties, then go to the compatibility tab and set it to run as administrator all the time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

Ok; just got Vista yesterday. Immpressive, but very, very new
Now, I installed 46 by this steps but seems like not working. The game just doesn't start. But is one thing. I didn't had a Shortcut and Security tabs in the 1 step. So I did that step at step 4 cause that's when it showed up. Should I unistall and reapet the story? Strangely cause I followed the instructions... S! |

What happens when you try to run il2? Nothing? Spinning disk then nothing? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

Yep. Spinning disk and a big silence after.... |

In the case of 1946, at the most the game will paste about 1 gig of data and the running program itself in RAM memory. So many people are kidding themselves in cases where they get 64 bit OSes and/or Windows Vista to run this game. I run WinXP now but not long ago I was running Windows 98SE with 1 gig of ram and all the game data and program code would load into my memory and from then on I would play for hours and it never once went out to the hard disk for more data. Except when loading a new mission of course. Then once the mission was loaded, no more HD access was needed. I don't expect that SOW will need to paste much more than 2 gigs into memory even for the most complex missions. I certainly have no intention of getting Win Vista for at least 4 years. I ran Windows 98 for a decade after it was introduced with relatively few problems.

Well thanks for sharing but what does that have to do with this thread? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

OK I've done everything suggested here. I sent a log to Securom have received a supply where they swear blind it isn't their fault. In
"Vista+nVidia problems - Pooling our resources" Alexismk2 reckons: "By looking in the Process Manager. Running il2fb.exe spins up the disc, gets to about 12/13Mb, stays there a while while the SecuRom cursor stays up and then continues to expand to about 60/70Mb at which point it crashes. As well, I sent the Launch Analasys report to SR last night and they got back pretty sharpish saying that it wasn't their software that was causing this. My main niggling clue is that the splash screen isn't even coming up, and that normally happens before even SR runs." So if this isn't Securom what is it? Alexismk2 also makes the valid point that everyone is going to lose IL2 as we are made to swap to Vista so it's in everyone's interest to work this out. At what point is this actually Ubisoft / Maddox's problem? |

That's a reply BTW. That's quite a typo I've got there

I have nothing but vile things to say about securom, it is 100% their software that causes this crash. Replace the securom embedded .exe with the US dvds non-securom .exe and the problem instantly disappears! It is absolutely despicable that they would deny this when they must know full well it's their problem. Ubisoft is also culpable in this since they too must be aware of the problem but has not posted a fixed .exe for all to download. This situation truly sickens me.

That's more or less what I figured out meself. Managed to install the game fine on 64bit Vista Home Premium using the instructions in this thread, but when I tried to launch the game, nothing happened, except the disc spinning, then not spinning. I was on TS thinking about this problem and asking some mates, and then I suddenly remembered I had saved an alternate execuatble in a folder somewhere. So off I went and retrieved said exe, and replaced the one in the game folder. A double click later, and I was away! No problems at all booting up now. Whit ye looking at, ya big jessie?!?! Za Rodinu! |

i've om Vista 64 bit home premium, followed all the tips in this message, the game installs, then i get spining disc icon and then a message saying a component is missing d83dll or something like that.
ANY IDEAS PLEASE?! |

When I first installed 46 on XP Pro x64, I got the same error. The file belongs to DirectX. Simply ran the dx installer from the 46 install disc to correct the problem. However, Vista is not a supported OS, and your problem may be related to Securom if don't have the 46 US issue. |

I agree with Urufu - Ubisoft should take a hint here. PUBLISH that US retail il2fb.exe. I find it highly insulting that they treat one group of customers (everyone outside the US) as if they were software pirats and Ubisoft needed to protect their product by including copy protection, while the US market gets a version that is not copyright protected at all. Next time I see a copyright protection mentioned on the box I will not buy the game. Securom is NOT uninstalled when you uninstall the game. They do provide an uninstall utility, but I had to ask them for it (very fast reply and handled great by SecuROM support btw).
Publishing the US retail version exe would be the right thing to do. Ubisoft did that before, for Rainbox 6:Vegas 2 (recent) they even downright stole a hacked no-cd exe and published that on the help/support site US and international copyright laws and treties explicitely ALLOW circumvention of copyright protection schemes if they prohibit the use of the program they protect. I don't think this is limited to Vista. It affects all 64 bit OS. This may be dumb, but can someone give me a clue where to find the a.exe? I can't seem to find it anywhere
