In order to join most squads in IL2 you will need to pick up the new 1946 edition then patch to 4.08m Then you will be inline to fly the most active version.

Good luck

What do I need to buy to play on a squad? It seems that I need to buy everything, and thats really expensive.

Flight simming can be a very expensive hobby. To get the absolute most out of flight sims you need a good computer, a good internet connection, and good controls. You can get by with a twisty stick or a stick that has sliders that you can assign to rudder control, but your best bet is a good stick and a set of rudder pedals. I also highly recommend TrackIR, no more using keyboard commands or a hat switch to look around, just swivel your head.

So let's look at the costs.

If you get a TrackIR 3 or 4 (and I recommend the Pro versions with the vector expansion. This gives you the ability to lean forward, backward, and sideways in the cockpit. Il2 doesn't support this feature, but FS2004 and the upcoming Storm of War: Battle of Britain do and it really adds to the realism.) it will last for years, so look at it as an investment.

For stick and rudder, I like the CH Products Fighterstick USB and their ProPedals USB. I had the same setup back when everything went through the gameport in the sound card and I used them for years without an issue. Again, I'd view this as an investment as they will last a long time.

As for the computer, whatever you buy today will be outdated tomorrow, so that's a never ending money drain, or at least it can be. A good computer should last 2 to 3 years before technology and game development renders it useless.

Flight sims can certainly be a wonderful hobby, but as I said before, quite expensive, but not nearly as expensive as flying a real airplane.

Oh, and I agree that buying Il2:1946 is your best option for online flying. Very few squadrons use I2-AEP-PF 4.04m these days.

We Pacific fliers desperately need a Solomon Islands map.

I have an excellent computer. My brother customized it with all top of the line graphics (except no speakers, we use headphones and he had a budget to stay within).

I have a good joystick, no foot pedals, simply no space below my computer.

Im content with using a easy to reach button on my joystick for head swivel, I played Aces High II for some time and that worked well.

I guess I'll buy 1946. Is the FB and AEP neccessary anymore?

No m8, Il-2:46 has everything released from FB to 4.07 Patch. Once you've got Il-2:46 you'll just need the 4.08 patch to fly online Wink2

Once you have the above just download Hyperlobby and you can fly for free anytime you like Thumbs Up

jtoups,

There are some great squads on this forum and it's your decision which squad you would like to join up with.

Our squad will accept young pilots who are serious about flying with a squad. We have 3 members in California and the rest scattered accross the US and Canada. We fly on Wed and Sat. nights at 5:45 PST. Wed night is the regualr squad night, so that's when we fly coops. Stop my our website and look around http://www.hotrodsandairplanes.com/2JG11/index.htm if you want to fly with us, let me know and I can help you get set-up. We have some very good pilots who will show you the ropes. -Rudo

hi jtoups121,

welcome to young blood Smile

I could offer you our squad but I see you can't make European time zones.

Yes you need 1946 and download the 4.08 patch. That's it for the game. ermmm... 'simulation' Smile

If you are getting good framerates (Average 30+) on your current pc with IL2+AEP then you'll be ok. CH is good gear but if you want to move up and can't afford CH look at Saitek X52 (or X45 on ebay?), also their pedals... when the time and the pocket money comes (or christmas!). Meantime you should have a stick with a 'Hat' switch for views. A button to cycle through the 3 main fields of view is helpful but I guess you are limited on buttons.

Good luck,
