Sounds interesting. Maybe if I find the time I would join you people. But anyways, I have a couple of questions to ask, if you don't mind.
1: What are your normal 'realism' requirements? I usually fly without the cockpit on, use icons, map icons and miniman paths, as well as unlimited ammo and no stalls/spins. Most of the time, I usually fly invulnerable. I suppose I can practice to improve my 'fair' piloting skills, but is the current realism preferences of mine acceptable to you? I can change those, I assure you, but I'll need to practice quite a bit first (especially the shooting!). 2: How often do I have to fly missions with you guys? You acknowledge that you people have members all over the world, and I'm not in North America, the time zone differences can be a major hinderance... as well as my occasional lack of interest in playing games at certain times. What are your minimum requirements of participation? 3: Is it possible for me to be able to leave the squadron at any time? Or do I have some obligations to fulfill first before considering saying goodbye? I ask this since I have a tendancy to lose interesting in many games very quickly, but I suppose I can stay for a while if I find it interesting enough. |

Hi there mate,
We fly in cockpit on and off games so there is no problem there, as for unlimited ammo. no stalls spins and invulnerable; we don't fly with these settings - basically it is more fun once you get used to it having to take care with your ammo so that you know when to shoot etc. and not simply just "spraying and praying", invulnerable kind of defeats the purpose as if we all flew like that then nobody could really win a dogfight so it's more fun without it in my opinion. We have official trainers in the squad so it's no problem if you would like to learn and there is no pressure for you to learn fast - we have pilots like we say from all over the world and with different skills and we are all still learning so no pressure on anyone. The fact that we have pilots all over the world, works in most peoples favour as it means when you want to fly then there is usually someone there to fly with for example I'm Scottish so I am not usually online when the majority of the Americans are but tend to fly more with the Canadians. Participation : You are encouraged to try and make it to the Sunday meetings which are held every week and to join in with forum discussions as much as possible, flying when YOU want to is your only obligation in that respect. Leaving whenever you want to: We have two forms of pilots which are Active and Reserve, Active pilots would be what is described above in "Particiption", sometimes real life gets in the way and a pilot may not be able to participate as much as they would like to, in this case that pilot can choose to move to reserve status which would mean that they just need to sign into the roster to keep their membership and occasionally keep us updated to their status, you know just sign in and say "Hi" every so often, when they are ready to return to "Active" status then they just let us know. The point is that we are here to have fun so there is no pressure on any of us, once pressure gets in the way of fun it ceases to be fun anymore and thats not what this is all about. Check out CAF96th Home Page, read through the charter etc. and have a look around. If you are still interested, just let anyone of us know or "sign up" at the home page. Salute! |

Sounds very fair to me, I think I'll seriously consider to join your squadron. But in order to reduce the training time and stress on your trainers (I'm very considerate for this sort of thing) I think I'll do as much practice as possible before joining -- and I already have! I just flew a quick mission with me in a P-40B vs 2 1945 Zekes and shot them both down! I ran out of ammo the moment the second zeke exploded but that wasn't an issue since the dogfight was over by then.
I agree with you people on the invulernablity and stalling part. I just started a new campaign with the ability to stall and spin on. It definately adds a new challenge to it. It's not for beginners, that's for sure, but I've been flying quite a bit. Now all I really need is practice my bombing and shooting skills... when under fire from AAA and enemy fighters! That'll be a real challenge! EDIT: I just read the charter on your website... I guess I'll need more practice than I thought! You people forbid time compression, so I guess I got some cramming to do in my shooting/bombing practice. Also, one last nagging question, I usually use autopilot when landing, taking off, and getting to places when I'm not in combat, is this acceptable to the squadron? |

Hey there,
Good job shooting down those Zekes bud; the time compression was more for back in CFS2 (our old stomping ground) so don't worry about that. The deal with auotpilot is that I would use it when playing a single player game for getting from A to B if it was going to take a lot of time to get there, sure that's no problem but in order to fly online with others you will eventually have to learn to take off and land - it's really not too difficult once you have gotten used to it. Can teach that that no problem - you know where we are so either join up and we can teach you (there is no required skills to join as all that can be taught) or you can carry on with your practice until you feel ready - choice is yours, stop by the site anytime - there is a public forum section at the site if you need to ask any questions. One question though, are you flying the merged version of this game 4.01m? |
|||
|
Yes, I am using the merged 4.01 update. And as you can deduce from that, I have all the games available for the moment (IL-2 plus the AEP and pacfic fighters).
I think that I really do need to learn taking off and landing... especially from a carrier! Anyway, I learned (albiet somewhat painful to my fictional pilot) that attempting to take from a stationary carrier with a F4U that's loaded with 4K lbs worth of bombs would result in a bath! I guess you people would probably have whatever carrier's we're taking off from to be heading at full speed to prevent that sort of thing, right? It'll be a challenge within itself, and I'm sure that the result will probably be worth it. Seeing that I've read your website almost entirely by now, I have to inquire as to whether or not I need a special program to be able to speak to you people on my microphone during flights. Is there one needed or not? But the good thing about my mike is that it's built into the headphones... just like a real pilot! Maybe I should buy some cheap goggles and wear a headcover of sorts... just to simulate being a real World War 2 pilot! :P |

Hi Propfighter,
lol yeah you should wear goggles when flying but only if you intend on posting a picture of it for us all to laugh at Voice communication: we use Teamspeak for talking when we fly, download the client version from Here When and if you join up we will then give you the address of our voice comm server and password and you will be good to go. Carrier take offs and loadouts depends on the situation really, if it's a dogfight room then there really isn't much we can do about it as all carriers are stationary in dogfight rooms but in Coops then as you say if the mission builder has set up the carrier to go at full speed then the option to carry more is available. There are some people out there that can take off from a stationary carrier with 100% fuel, rockets and I think it was a couple of 500lbs bombs (but I'm not one of those people lol). Hope to hear from you soon. ~S~ |

Sounds pretty good. I'm at work right now, but will be done in half an hour or so, then I can head right back home and start practicing using more 'modern' aircraft to knock down some airplanes.
The teamspeak is interesting. I'll be sure to get it and use it. Since you people allow the use of any airplane, I think I'll make the P-51/P-47 my main land based aircraft while the carrier based goes over to the F4U. Variations will be there (otherwise it'll be boring), but those airplanes are very good. I'll need to test flight some Yaks, though, as I've never flown one yet! Thanks for your help, I'll be joining the public forums on CAF96 soon. See ya there! |

Yeah we allow the use of any airplane as long as it is Allied just to be crystal about it; which isn't to say that we don't fly Axis sometimes but we just don't do it when flying under our "96th" tag.
Our main aircraft that we fly as a squad in are the F4U/Corsair, the Hellcat, P38, P47, Wildcats, B-25, A20, Beaufighter etc. Me, I have a personal preference to the Spitfires (since I'm Scottish) but our main rides would be the Pacific Allied aircraft. See you soon! |

|
Your main airplanes are fine by me! The p-47 is pretty good aircraft, too. Given it's massive engine and eight guns... I've knocked down two betty bombers with those once without really breaking a sweat!
Anyway, my gunnery practice is mostly done... on the time compressed mode (That's OK, right?). But all I really need now is bombing, AAA avoidment and landing. The tutorials should provide adequate information for that... seeing that I've discovered that taking off is more frustrating than I thought! Also, one question about the P-38. Which version do you guys fly? THe P-38J or the P-38L? Also, do you people fly that supposedly 'fantasy' P-48L 'late' version with 1720HP engines? |
