I'm thinking about joining a squadron to tap into these elegant tactical battles. I've had enough of solo flying.

21, South African (so looking for an EU based sq preferably, but not solely). Decent flyer (or so I tell myself at night), can fly rough formo and I have worked in a team with the other SA okes. Great bunch, but a wee bit too few of them to really set up some regular squadron action.

I'm very set on full switch/difficulty and a penchant for history. I've started flying in online wars (loving it) and would like to continue. ADW in particular (the others seem quite small in comparison) but I'm keen to expand my horizons, if need be. German planes by preference (the 109, though I'd like to learn to handle the 190 properly) but I'm happy to fly pretty much anything. I'd like to fly more than just hunting missions, i.e. bomber escort, CAS, etc so a bomber division would be nice, or some kind of an affiliation with bomber groups.

I fly fighters, mostly. Not much good in a bomber, though I can fly formo and generally not make a mess of things Smile
JABO role is one I can handle fairly well, depending on the plane (can't quite get those tank kills with the bf-110 and a 3.7 without making a pancake)

I'm looking for a bunch of light-hearted friends who can have a good time, but are also willing to set some rules, shout some orders, and cut through the enemy with maximum efficiency. Ranks and discipline (at selected times) would be great.

So... does anyone fit my fairly narrow criteria? :P

P.S: I have TS, mic, good stick (X52), decent comp, broadband, etc.

Hi,
My squad is a Co-op squad so its not really what you are looking for, but i thought id offer it to you anyhow. We fly the 109g2 in co-op missions, currently in Normandy in June 1942, feel free to check out our website and forums (link in my sig) With our squad we don;t restrict you to being a member of our gruppe only, we allow you to be in as many as your time permits, so if you wanted to be in an "online wars" type of squad and have a co-op squad as well for those times you want to cruise against the AI with some mates feel free to check us out at II./JG53
But most of all - welcome to online IL2! it's great fun! And good luck with the squad hunting!

Well,Hi from me too!

1st-We're I Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grunherz" /or just I/JG54/ and we're maybe what you're looking for, cause we're crazy about the FW-190 Demonic /that doesn't mean that we don't like the ME-109 too Smile ),we're trying to represent the I/JG54 virtually as it was in the real life in WW2,so that's why we fly mainly the Fock-Wolf 190.

2nd-If you join us,you're not going to be lonely, cause almost every night some of us is flying in the Hyper-lobby.Our members are based in:USVI,Bulgaria,Germany,Sweden,UK,USA,Swiss.

3rd-We've just created an special JABO wing,so if you join us,you can choose to be a jabo or fighter pilot,we don't fly heavy bombers.
So if you're interested in joining, just click on my signature and to check our web-site/this is our old site, and the roster is not updated, cause we're doing a master update+replacement on our site/,and pop-up by our forums, and feel free to ask anything Smile .
Also you can send me an PM here,or ask everyone with I/JG54 prefix in the lobby.
Well,that's all Smile .

S!I/JG54_Gringo

ps:Ohhh almost forgot,we're now currently flying in "Airforce war /AW/" and CAD war,and in the dog.fight servers too,and we're not engaged as "Coop." or "Online dog.fight" squadron only.
We fly both.

Hiya & Salute!;

Though I'm a firm believer in being a member of a squadron as without question enhances the simulation 100 fold, I'd suggest you take the time and consider each squadron carefully. Visit their sites, fly with each that inspires you online a bit and get to know them and their demeanor.

It's important they fit your needs and you theirs. Folks are often too anxious to join a squadron and in kind squadrons too anxious to fill their rosters.............After the fact a poor time to decide if you're a good match for one another.

A good place to start would be This Thread . There you will find squadrons active enough to check here though there are many others yet unfortunately the "squadron page" is a maze of dead links or no longer active units...

Good luck in your search Wink2

Hi kid_SA

have a look at our website to see what we are about.

We're a European time-zone squad that likes to 'do it right'. We use full switch servers in HL or our own and fly anything from Fighter sweep through escort to ground attack with some level bombing thrown in. We fly formation based on pairs/sections/flights.

We have some very old hands in this virtual business and some very new ones too. We will help you through training and have a structure and flying discipline that gets us where we want to go without going to life-crippling extremes.

We also have a good sense of camaraderie and humour.

Look us up and you can email me via the link on out recruitment page - no obligation.

Good luck,

Thanks for the offers and the warm welcome. I'll be taking Billfish's advice and thinking carefully.

A few more questions.

Do you all fly on full realism settings? including no icons (at all) or speed bar or anything on the map? These really take the immersion out of the game for me.

Being that I'm looking to join for those sq vs sq moments, what organised battles do you do? If you fly in online wars, which ones and how actively?

And most importantly: when and where can I find you to get to know you? Which evenings (GMT) do you fly, and on which servers? Is it easiest to make contact through MSN or TS or what?

Valentine: some coop on the side does sound like fun Smile
I adore the G2! Do you fly full real?

We fly Full real, but in most of the missions we fly with Speed bar available. Now we fly only in Airforce war /AW/,and last night we flew all day long Smile .Personally i'm able to fly every night at 19:30 GMT ,and our training days are Thuesday's and Friday's,when all of our squadron members meet in the lobby and start flying together from 19:30 GMT.
In AW war,we mostly meet squad to squad with most of the polish "3xx_xxxx" squadrons.

p.s:we contact each other via MSN.

These are the difficulty settings we use for our co-op missions -

This has seemed to give us the best balance between "fun" and "realism" - if you die very early on its not fun to sit there watching a smoking crater if external views are off Wink

We tend to fly Friday and Sunday, meet up is normally between 20:30 - 21:30 GMT depending on what shifts some of our members are working that week.

You are more then welcome to come along for the co-ops, they are bloody good fun!

As for finding your "main" online squad - good luck and think carefully, take your time prawling the servers to see how peopel fly, if they cut infront of you etc then they arnt going to be hugely fun to fly with.
Regards,
V

Hi kid_SA

We fly mostly on HL dogfight servers or on our own server where we run co-op campaigns for our own use.

We look for full switch settings like "SpitsVs109s", "ZekesVsWildcats", etc which only have compass in the speed bar which is ok because in many a/c it's just impossible to see the instrument itself. There are a few we will use which have only short range icons or the 'own a/c' map icon although we prefer no icons.

On our server co-op campaigns we are full switch except that we allow external views so that if you die you can follow the progress of the other guys. (Believe me flying in external view is not only unrealistic but is disorientating too so we don't consider it to be an issue.)

We fly Wednesday and Sunday nights officially at 8pm til 10pm (usually arriving around 7:30 onwards til around 10:30pm) Some are often on on Friday nights from 9pm and you'll usually find a couple on most nights.

We use Teamspeak and have our own servers and organised comms setup.

Regarding Squad vs Squad, we have flown a few organised events but not many. Maybe we should do more Smile But we do look for squad opposition in HL where we can find it. Our general approach to HL servers is 'we like to make a difference' Smile

So, with about 12-14 pilots - about 8-10 flying on any one night, we are looking to build up the squad but don't let that give you the impression we are new. We have many old hands, I've been flying on line since 1996. Using HL, we are possibly more nomadic than some squads, particularly the very large squads who are big enough to run things themselves on a large scale but we like it that way, the opposition and flying does not become 'stale'.

Good luck with your choice,

You really would be doing yourself a disservice if you failed to check out 69 GIAP. Not only do we have the best vodka and borscht of any squadron, sometimes we even get some time off latrine duty to actually sample it.

Mmmm...tasty.

We have three different branches specialising in bus driving (bombers), lawn mowing (ground attack) and propaganda film star duties (fighters). We are currently flying 2 SEOW campaigns weekly and generally there are people around during European evening times.

There is training on offer but aside from the basic training requirements all participation in squadron activities is on a voluntary basis, although a NKVD TT-33 at the back of the skull might help remind you how valuable volunteering can be.

If you think you might fit in to the 69 GIAP just click on my signature to check out our website and we can answer any questions you have in our forums.

kid,

You might try going to Hyper Lobby and flying on some of the servers that offer full realism.

Check them out first. Get onto Team Speak with them and listen to them before you decide.

thanks to everyone for the offers and the advice, except for Shura, who's now made me very hungry.

Don_X/Sneaky: yes, tis I. Smile

Been bred on the ASE, so I only pop in to HL to check for these squads, hence it might take a while for me to find everyone. But I'll keep looking.

Cheers. I hope to see you all soon in the online skies.
