To get set up online you first need to make sure you are running the latest version of IL-2, Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters etc. Most of us are currently on version 4.071 (1946 version of IL-2) but can change to earlier versions if needs be.

Then download and install this free program called hyperlobby (which is where you will find hundreds of online Pilots):

You need to set up a user name and direct the HyperLobby to your il2fb.exe in your main IL-2 folder, then you are away!

For communication as a Squadron we use TeamSpeak which also has to be downloaded (for free) and installed:
