I'm getting exactly the same thing. Q6600, 4GB PC4200, 8800 Ultra, DX10 and newest official forceware. I'm thinking it's just a horrible implementation of shadows on Ubi's part, but who knows ? This is definitely one of the worst, though. Blocky shadows is one issue, but changing LOD of shadows at so close a distance and in such a painfully obvious manner ? Pathetic... Does anyone else experience this wonderful phenomenon as shown in the video ?

its possible when you get under the shade the computer stops drawing the fine detail meaning the hay ontop of the cover wouldnt be renderd any more so it wouldnt be taken into the calculation when working out the shaddows. alot of games tend to do this as they would rather keep the high detail rendering in the direct line of site and basic for the area just off camera. it's just a side affect of what is basicaly a mirror image of something off the screen hell I have seen games before totaly loose shadows once the object was behind you.

Well, I've gotten a response from tech support on this:

"Response (Jason) - 05/28/2008 05:09 PM
Jack,

This is not a problem with the game, it is a limitation of the graphics engine."

caswallawn: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're saying this could be a side-effect of occlusion culling.

yep its basicaly a case of instead of wasing graphics rendering objects off screen they render a low detail version as it is easier to put the graphics level up when you turn to the object. so in theory if you can keep the shade and the shadow in view the shadow should stay in full detail as your computer is still rendering the shade in high detail.

Yeap, but there still a lot of people, who haven't this "problem" at all (with same configuration as mine)

its not a problem its a physical limitation of the games graphics engin short of you reverse engineering the entire game and rebuilding the graphics engin from scratch there is no way to change it.
