Hi
When playing Assassin's Creed I get frequent crashes within a few minutes of play. The video stops and leaves a still image but the audio continues. In some cases I can close Assasin's Creed by alt tabbing etc. but sometimes it completely crashes my computer and i need to restart. I saw people with the same problem with the same gpu (8800) but they had managed to fix their problem by trying different drivers. I tried the drivers they had suggested (uninstalled properly and used driversweeper) but it still didnt work. I have tried lots of drivers now but it stil doesnt work. I have been playing other games such as Mass Effect with no problem. Can anyone who has had the same problem suggest drivers that they used to fix it. Thanks very much.
I have also tried Downclocking GPU, increasing fan speed to 100%,trying most drivers supported for 8800GT, Resinstalled game twice. Temps are also fine.
Here is my System Spec:
AMD Dual Core 3800+ (with dual core optimiser)
2GB Ram
8800GT 512mb

remove your virtual drive and copying software as these can conflict with the game. also increase the size of your page file a bit. on a final note is your version of XP service pack 3 a beta/pre release version as they dont normaly show a release number on final. if you do have a pre release version/beta version uninstall it and install the final version from microsoft.com

1. You "tried downclocking GPU", but you should have tried downclocking the videomemory.

2.

I personally haven't had any problem related to the updater. I haven't disabled it and still running 100.1 version of the game.

Also, make sure no unneeded programs are running on the background, email notofications, anti-virus, systemprotection software etc.

yep downclocking the video card memory was done aswell. I should really be more specific. But i have a feeling it could be fixed not sure why exactly. I will post back to confirm it.

Looks like you're already using current graphic card drivers right?
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

As an alternative (and I find quite good and stable graphic drivers - it's the drivers I use for my system) you may consider trying the "Omega" graphic drivers for your nVidia card:
http://www.omegadrivers.net/nvidia_winxp.php

Do a full scan of your system to see if any viruses and/or spyware / malware may be lurking.

Other things to try as well may be to ensure that all other background applications, such as anti-virus, internet connection, memory managers, etc..., are disabled.

Do a hard disk defrag on your main drive and whatever drive that Assassin's Creed is installed on.

Try lowering the in-game's graphics setting a bit to see if it helps.

Make sure the inside of your computer is nice and clean. Especially make sure the computer's motherboard CPU fan and the graphic's card fan is clean of dust and dirt that could be clogging it up and thus making things overheat.

If you have more than 1 game contoller plugged in, try unplugging the 2nd contoller, as personally I found it sometimes messed things up a bit when playing AC on my PC.

Good luck! Smile

After trying absolutely everything, nothing seemed to fix it. I am pretty much giving up on trying to get it working.
Interestingly, after defragging the drive that it was installed on, the first thing it started to do was move files within the Assassin's Creed folder and afterwards i was able to play for a good while maybe 20 mins or so but it did eventually crash with a different error: "Assassin's Creed has encountered a problem..." When i went to run it again the game froze like before. I tried defragging again but no luck.
Thankfully i didnt buy the game, i was only borrowing it from a friend. I would just like to say thanks very much for all the suggestions and help and if you know of any fixes for this problem, please let me know.

P.S Shame on you Ubisoft for such a buggy release. The game also needs to be optimised, Crysis etc. looks 10X (exaggeration perhaps:P) as good and runs at the same framerate.

A couple of other suggestions that come to mind that you may want to try:

Ensure that for all your hard-drives that the "Indexing Service" is turned off. By default, Windows has it enabled. It's really a somewhat useless and unnecessary service, eats up systems resources, can cause overall system slowdown and perfomance issues and possible conflicts with some programs as it's always running in the background.
Simply explore to your hard-drive, right-click, select "properties", then on the General tab, towards the bottom you'll see if "Allow indexing service..." has a check-mark in the box. If so, un-check this box for all hard drives. This can take a few minutes to disable this service so be patient. But once it's done you may notice your computer's overall performance improves.

If you had the indexing service already disabled and you still have the problem with AC crashing, then I guess it's another problem. You mentioned that you could play longer after running a defrag, so perhaps it's possible it's a hard-drive issue with the particular drive that you have the AC game installed on (perhaps for some reason it just doesn't like that particular hard-drive). In that case, maybe try uninstalling then reinstalling Assassin's Creed on a different hard-drive may correct the issue.

Oh yes, you may also want to disable "Error reporting" of Windows. Go to "Control Panel" then open "System", select the "Advanced" tab, then click on the "Error reporting" button. Choose the "Disable error reporting" option then Apply and Ok evertyhing.

Well, that's about all the suggestions I can think of for now. Too bad you can't seem to get it running smoothly on your system as it's really an awesome game.

Your K:\ is a virtual drive created by copying/cloning/emulating software, you see the wrath of Securom copyprotection working. Unmount the drive and uninstall the disc cloning software (Alcohol 120% Deamon Tools, CloneDVD and such)

Your hardware is perfectly capable to run the game. On none of my test-PC's the game refused to run. I did have to turn down the overclock a bit on my ATI videocards.
Runs perfectly fine on XP, Vista 32, Vista 64. Safe to say the game is not buggy at all.

Yep i already got rid of the drive and uninstalled the software but still problems. I suppose the game isnt buggy but there must be some compatibility issues with the 8800 gpu seeing as everyone wih the same problem has that gpu

BTW Bigdon1's solution abuot disabling indexing made the game work for longer, im not sure if this was a coincedence though. Thanks for that btw.

it actualy runs 100% for me on a 8800GT so its more likly caused by a conflict somewere in your hardware if the drivers and stuff dont fix it. all I can suggest is check your IRQ's and see if the graphics card is conflicting with any other hardware as if it is dissabling that part (if possible) while playing may fix the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion caswallawn.I noticed that my 8800gt was sharing an IRQ with my wireless network card so i reseated the card in a different slot and now they all have different IRQs but sadly the game still did not work. It crashed as usual but in a different manner, the video stopped on a still image but the audio loops itself for a few seconds and then the computer restarted automatically, it hasnt done that before.

have you tried under clocking the graphics card ram since you moved the other card to solve the IRQ fault as the problem you are having now sounds like the old nv4 error that has been fixed in this way by other people.

also to confirm this it may be worth going to advanced system settings on my computer and going into start up and recovery and unchecking restart on failure as it would allow you to see the blue screen.

Ok, i tried the game normally with no underclock to see the crash again but it was the original crash where the audio continues and doesnt loop.
I then did a farily large unclock, over 100 mhz drop on each clock (core, shader and memory) but same crash again. Both times i was able to alt-tab out of the game.
