Hello all,

A few in the community have reported having a technical difficulties and in particular are getting a "nv4_disp" error message.

This seems to be linked to a known problem with certain Nvidia based PC graphics cards. At this time we would like people to follow the steps below and report back.

Please look at this link for full instructions but these do not have anything to do with Ubisoft. Please only attempt the following if you are happy with the following steps.

    1. Boot your computer into Safe Mode w/ Networking. For Windows XP users, this is accomplished by pressing F8 repeatedly when your computer is booting up. You will be presented with several options. Choose “Safe Mode w/ Networking.” This will boot Windows XP into Safe Mode, but you will be able to browse the Web.

    2. Go to NVIDIA’s Web site and download the latest display drivers for Windows XP. Save the 20MB file to my desktop for easy locating later on.

    3. Remove the NVIDIA display drivers currently installed on your machine. To do this, right click on “My Computer,” then select Properties. Click the “Hardware” tab, then click “Device Manager.” You now see a list of hardware devices installed on your computer. Double click “Display Adapters.” You should now see your NVIDIA card listed. Click it once to highlight it, then click the “Uninstall” icon in the upper right of Device Manager menu. The NVIDIA drivers are removed from your machine.

    4. Install the updated NVIDIA display drivers. Double-click the NVIDIA setup file you saved to the desktop earlier. The installation will run its course.

    5. Reboot your computer.

Latest Nvidia Drivers. (Follow Instructions)

Can people please post here if they have managed to solve the problems, this will help the entire community by giving us valuable feedback.

Thank You.

Well I just tried it as well, and no success. I did not notice it any better than before though.

This is the same problem I had in Windows XP (SP2) 32-bit, before I formated and tried Vista SP1 (my XP wasn't running great, so I figured maybe it'd fix those problems, as well as this). So I am going out on a limb and saying this isn't a Vista (64bit) only problem.

System Specs:
Microsoft Vista Ultimate x64
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R Rev 1.1 Bios F10
Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800 2GB (2x1GB)
EVGA 8800GT Superclocked Edition (Stock Speeds) NVidia Forceware 174.74 Beta Drivers (03/27/08)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (320GB SATA-II)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4 Pro

Same problem; solution didn't work. DX9 or 10, makes no difference. Game crashes; usually shows red artifacts onscreen first. Gave me a BSOD the first time, but since then it's just a black screen, totally unresponsive. Too bad; AC's the most fun game I can barely play. Specs:

Vista 32 SP1
Intel Core2 3.0 Ghz
Nforce 650i board
MSI Geforce 8800GT 660 Ghz, factory overclocked
Razer Barracuda Sound card
Forceware 174.74 / 169.44 / 169.25 (none work)

Seems to be a problem with the GeForce 8800GT in particular, no?

I'm already running the latest drivers (169.44)and experience the same crashes.

Vista 64 SP1
AMD 6000 X2
Geforce 8800GT

Nothing is overclocked and everything is running as normal - Except this game that is.

I am having the same problems. I have tried the beta driver and also the driver you suggested in the first post here. My BSOD ALWAYS occurs at the same time. It occurs a few seconds after loading the mission right after the tutorial (whatever that mission is, I have no clue because I can't play).

After starting a new game - and playing through the tutorial a second time, I promptly crashed at the same point just after starting the first mission. Other users BSOD seems to be more random, mine always occurs at exactly the same point, but it appears to be the same error described in the first point.

Thank you for your time.

My system, all drivers updated:

I am having the same problem with nvlddmhm.sys error message. I bought Assassin's Creed yesterday and I had only 1 crash of the display driver. Today I can't even play 5 min of the game cause it crashes non stop. I am running the game on DX10.
I followed the instuctions but did not help. Also I followed some other sugestions from the web to solve the problem and it also did not help.

Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Q6600
Asus p5n32-e SLI plus
4GB Ram
GF 8800 GTX

For me this problem only apears when I am playing Assassin's Creed. Other games are running perfectly.

I hope that there will be a solution to this problem soon.

I just want to add this.

The game always crashed when I compleated memory block 2. After it was the part when I had to talk to Lucy and go to bed. In this part the game somehow freezed several times and the nvlddmhm.sys error occured. I tried several times to pass that moment as fast as possible and I have done so. After it I can play the game without any crushes of the display driver. Now I am finishing Acre in memory block 3.

I hope this information will help somehow in fixing the problem with display driver.

I will keep this thread updated if an error appears again in the future for me.

I also have a similar problem though I don't get the nvidia messsage. I also have nx8800gt from MSI and I can't play the game since it crashes in the middle of the tutorial. Thanks Ubisoft. Thanks.

Sadly this did not work for me either. It seems the problem is most persistent on Nvidia based GPUs and as such, I'm just going to assume it is their incompetence that has lead me to not being able to play AC :-)

It's funny - something like 30% of all crashes on Vista are Nvidia related ^^

System:
Vista x64
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.7
GeForce 9600 GT XT
4 gig DDR2 RAM

It does seem that some are using GeForce based cards and the drivers are known to be a little bit odd (PC gamer myself Happy)

It is being looked at as we speak and I will update as soon as I have anything more solid.

I got a BSOD with the nv4_disp driver every time I tried to enter Damascus. After seeing some posts on this forum, I tried removing the drivers and installed the latest version of them, but that didn't work.

After turning off SLI in the BIOS (didn't try just turning it off in Windows), the game runs with no BSOD so far.

My rig:
Asus A8N-SLI
AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+
4 GB RAM
Windows XP (SP2)
Two Asus EN9600GT with 512 MB, normally in SLI.

First of all, I think I found a possible solution for this problem (All credits go to darksylph86 @ thisthread).

Following what he did, I went to the nVidia control panel and turned on Triple Buffering. Surprisingly I was able to play AC for like 2 hours without no crases (as opposed to crashes occured between 5 - 20 into the game).

FYI I have a 8800 GT (new Beta Drivers) on stock settings and I use WIndows XP Pro SP2.

Hope this helps Big Grin

Fixed this on my machine (Vista 32bit) by opening the game folder and right clicking the .exe from and selecting "run as administrator". No more frustating BSODSmile Still though, Ubisoft should never have released this game in this state in the first place! Hopes this helps some of you.

@maximus_laggus
The "run as administrator" does not work for me. I still get the error.

I compleated memory block 4 with only 3 crashes of the disp driver (it occured only in Jerusalem) . Now After memory block 4 when I am talking with Lucy the error appears non stop. After loading the sequence in Abstergo I can play only for 30-60 sec and than it crashes.

Same problem here, red artifacts in the middle of the tutorial. Contacted Ubisoft held desk a couple a days ago but to no avail. Paltry solutions for an unnerving experience. US guys this game costs $ 75 in Germany.

A very disappointed customer

Turning on Triple Buffering worked for me (nvidia control panel)
