As the subject said - all of the characters in the game have flickering white pixels "dancing" all over them. It is really annoying. Otherwise the game plays fine. I only see them on the characters, not the other parts of the game.

I am using an 8800GT with the latest drivers (had the same problem with the previous drivers), Windows XP and the latest patcher version of AC from Steam.

I've tried playing with all the in-game graphic settings to see if I could find something that would solve this, but no luck there.

Other games that I play seem fine (Gears of War, Crysis, COD4, etc).

Help! It is so annoying I can't play the game!

1. Make sure you have the 3D-settings (AA, AF) in nVidia control panel at default, to let the application decide.

2. Reduce the memory clock on the videocard a little.

3. Update your X-Fi Extreme Audio drivers

4. Defragment! Diskeeper Lite

Thanks, I tried all your suggestions - updated sound drives, reduced memory speed from 900 to 800 (and GPU speed from 625 to 600), checked Nvidia drivers... everything seems okay.

I'm not experiencing problems in other games, just Assassin's Creed. I am dying to play it, but I have to get these flashing pixels to go away! Arg!

I'm almost tempted to go buy the retail version as I have the Steam version to see if that makes a difference, but that seems like a waste of money.

Does the phenomenon also appear when you run the game at lowest (ingame) graphics settings?
(Of course, without manually editing the .cfg file, leave that untouched)

There should be no "technical" difference between the Steam version and the retail box. I currently have the Steam version installed on two very different systems and am not seeing the issue you describe.

In my experiences, both firsthand and via secondhand information, sparkling white dots tend to indicate one or more of the following:

1. Graphics driver corruption - when you install new drivers, do you uninstall the old ones first? Even if you do, the possibility still exists that leftover files from the old drivers are present on your system if Windows or other programs (like anti-virus) had a "lock" on these during the uninstall. Mismatched driver files can certainly cause visual anomalies not unlike what you're seeing. A few years back, I wrote up some documentation in regards to doing a clean driver installation. That information can be referenced here here.

2. An overheating problem - I've never seen my hardware stressed quite as much as when I play Assassins Creed, particularly in regards to the amount of heat generated. I understand that you underclocked your video card as recommended by someone else. Are you also monitoring temps to make sure that they're "normal?" I've seen instances where temps were completely within the "acceptable" range and artifacting (the white dots you're seeing) still occurs. If you suspect heat to be an issue, a quality aftermarket cooler for your video card might be a good option.

3. Background application interference - do you currently run any applications or processes in the background (perhaps on Windows startup) that either intercept or completely dominate the graphical display? Some examples of these could be AUTOCAD software, but might be something as simple as scanner, digital camera, or other imaging utilities. Try closing any background programs and processes (including your anti-virus/anti-spyware programs temporarily) and see if that makes a difference. Also, disconnect any USB devices that may be utilzing the graphics display.

4. A hardware issue - despite how new the equipment is or how it plays everything else "perfectly", sometimes games can serve to identify a hardware issue you didn't even know you had. In it's day, Doom 3 was a good benchmark for system stability, particularly the GPU since it literally used hardware on the card that other games didn't even touch. Perhaps Assassins Creed is very much the same. Once you've exhausted the other possiblities, it might be worth it to go to a retail store (with a good return policy) and pick up another 8800GT or higher end card. Install the card in your system and retry the game. If the artifacting in your game disappears, you know you have a hardware issue and can take the appropriate steps to return your old card to where you bought it if possible. If not, you can always return the "new" card to the place of purchase. Using a credit card to buy the "new" card makes the process that much easier.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
neildittmar, I uninstalled the drivers, ran Driver Sweeper in safe mode & reinstalled - same problem. Used ntune to crank the fan up - temps were about 50 C which seems okay.

However, in doing some more playing with the settings, it seems to be the shadows setting that makes it better or worse. With Shadows set to the lowest value, 1, the flickering white dots aren't too bad - usually I just see a few on the main character (Altiar) but none on the guards and citizens. At 2 or 3, the sparking white pixels get far worse on all characters.

Are there any changes I can make to the config file to help with shadows? At a setting of 1, the game doesn't look that great...

just wondering is it the same type of floating pixelation as round the flag's and combat targets? as that is intended in some cases.

Oh, and the "interactable" characters in the public (for instance the ones that are ready to be pickpocketed by you) have a white sort of drawing over them, and that is fully intended. If that's what this thread is about: problem solved! Big Grin

Here's the 'not yet captured flag' sparklings

the white linings on a character who is noticing me:

and the combination of sparkling white textures and the white lines when fighting with that character:

... the way it is intended to be! Smile

Thanks for posting those images. And NO, that isn't what I'm seeing. Smile

What I see are tiny white pixels on the character's bodies - they are flickering but I sense they are related somehow to the geometry of the character, they don't seem random.

If someone could tell me how to take a screen shot & upload it, I'd do that.

use a program like fraps and it will allow you to take a screen shot. then you can upload it to a image host such as imageshack or photobucket then just link to the picture here.
