The DARE.ini file tweak fixed this issue for me. It now runs very smooth. Clap

Now as to why this works for some and not others??
Anyone else notice that when it does freeze that your HDD sounds like it is going non-stop until the freeze stops? I have a feeling the answer lies in a setting for the HDD or virtual memory.
Also Kenshin's comment on the fact that we all have NVidia cards could be on the right track as well.
This helped me with a previous game problem: try going into your graphics card settings -> manage 3D settings and try turning off following: Antialiasing - Transparency. I hope that helps the rest of you.

Now thats very strange..
The problem suddenly disappered, now i'm not experiencing any freezes nor crashes.. Actually, i just finished the game and did not encounter a single error since yesterday..
btw, i reverted to default settings in the .ini file, everything working fine.
now.. 1 thing i cannot understand is why it began to work - i cannot remember i did anything significant to solve the prob - just turned off pc, turned on the next day - and the problem is no more.. lol..

Installed the game on my Macbook Pro in Bootcamp and it runs fine, no weird glithces, the macbook has an 8600M 128megs (of course it doesnt run anywhere near my 9800GTX with 512). So it is not the actual disc I have, but difinetly something in the OS, maybe an update or something? Im running SP1 of Vista Ultimate Retail.

Did you unplug any USB devices? Disconnect from a network? Add or remove any software or drivers? Anything that can help me figure it out?

It appears the Ethernet driver is causing this problem. After I uninstalled it I could play without freezes.

EDIT: It isn't the Ethernet driver. This may sound strange but when I disconnect my computer from the internet I played with out freezes! Unplug your computer from the internet and see if that solves it.

I'll give it a shot.

Edit... that fixed it.

I have confirmed the removal of the cat5 (ethernet) cable will remove freezes, so I presume it is some sort of failed to attempt to "phone home". I haven't found it yet, but if I can find the .ini or .dll that has the ubi/steam address and change it to a loopback address (127.0.0.1) then I'm sure that will prevent the need to remove the cable. Anyone who can help me with this process will much appreciated by all who are having this problem and receive free ice cream.

First off, great job all in the last few posts on figuring out what the issue was. I can confirm as well that it worked for me to be disconnected from the Internet. However, since I don't like to physically unplug my ethernet cable to accomplish this, I thought I'd mention it also works to disable the LAN port that is currently connected to the Internet (and I'm assuming disabling WiFi would accomplish the same thing, if that's how you connect to the Internet, but I have not yet confirmed that).

Anyway, cheers all and happy gaming!

Edit: I guess I spoke too soon. While disabling the LAN DID work yesterday, it does not seem to be working today. I'm still getting the same random crashes even with the LAN disabled. I can't think of anything that's changed on my system since I played it last, so perhaps a reboot will restore the functionality of disabling the LAN to make the game stop crashing.

Edit 2: No, that didn't seem to help, either. I guess I just got lucky with the disabling of the LAN. Although, I will admit that without the LAN enabled, I do end up lasting longer without a crash, so it might at least make the game bearable for some who are crashing often, like I was.

This reminds me of a fix I've seen before in other games, in some of those the fix was to only have either wifi or ethernet disabled as having them both on caused a freeze or crash.

NP, we're just trying to help. Now if we can find a way to alter the gamestate to not require such measures just to play. I've been investigating the possible fixes, none yet. Will, of course, post if/when I find one. Everyone else please do the same. Thumbs Up

the address is 216.98.48.53:3074 random local, 3 attempts every 75 seconds, registering to ubisoft in ontario. drm messing with honest patrons again, when will they learn. might improve performance but I doubt it's going to make it completely stable, I think their memory management/culling is completely fubar. just watch the videomem usage with something like rivatuner, I can tell right before it's going to crash as it nears the upper limits of my card. for example if you lower both shadows/filtering to 1/3, initial assets will consume about 180mb in the middle of damascus, then watch it balloon all the way up to whatever total you have and wait for the bsod. the audio engine is obviously involved as well, when they instruct us to manually lower acceleration that is supposedly dx9/10 compliant in the readme you know there's something wrong.

Did you find that info hard-coded somewhere? Cause I've been looking, 'without' any luck. Hammer

just watch the outbound traffic coming from the game executable, if you don't have some sort of firewall with logging then you can run "netstat -b" from a command line. as long as the game is running it will keep hammering away at that address.

do you guys think it safes to just completely black list that IP using hosts? I mean it's a single player game and aside from the "auto update" feature it doesn't need the internet.

Hey,
I noticed when my assasin creeds crashes. That my Geforce is getting like 120celcius. I think my overheeted card is somehow connected to the problem. I got all Graphic settings set on medium else my Geforce 7600 GT cant handle it. I can play for an hour straight with no problems or and lag but then I guess the temperature is getting to high and the game just crashes to windows or freezes. I also noticed that when ive played for like an hour I cant turn the vieuw to certain parts of the city anymore this happenend in damascus.

Intel Pentium D 830 cpu 3.000 ghz
DDR2 1024 MBytes
Geforce 7600 GT running on the latets non beta nvidea driver

You might very well be having video card heat issues cause your game to crash, I'm sorry you're having that issue but that is off topic.

As far as blacklisting the IP, idk if that would work but it very well might. If you do try blacklisting, AC might be using different IPs for a connectivity and (possibly) an update check. Give it a shot and repost back. Smile

I tried that and it didn't work but disconnecting from the network did. I didn't bother running netstat to see if it's trying to connect to a different IP or if the game's just waiting for a connection it's not going to get.
