The following things cause the game to freeze for 10 to 15 seconds:

- Picking up a flag
- Loading a new area
- Causing a guard to become alert
- Killing

The third and fourth are particularly annoying because after being spotted, I'll run around a corner and if I'm seen again I get to watch nothing happen another 15 seconds while the music and warning tone continue to play. If I decide to stand and fight, I'll have to kill 3 or 4 guards with freezes in between.

If none of those things happen I can play the game for hours without problems. This is the only game that has any problems for me. I use a 320mb 8800GTS, AMD X2 4200+, and 2GB of ram.

The game takes up memory when initializing a special event/saving your progress.

What are your system specs?

Wait, you are playing on PC right?

What are your system specs? Big Grin

Specs are in the first post. I read something that sounded ridiculous about game loading entire 700+mb archives into memory to access a single file so I put in a third gig of ram just in case and it didn't help.

The drive is fully defragged too just to answer the obvious.

It does seem to be linked to stuff that accesses the save file but why would killing a random guard or being spotted access it?

And why would reaching checkpoints in the story that put a "saving" icon on the screen not do it?

The hard drive is a 7200rpm SATA drive, it's no slouch.

I just did a clean install of XP. Assassin's Creed and drivers were the only software installed at all and it still had the problem.

Having the same problem here.
cpu q6600/2gb ram/8800GTX drv. ver. 174.74/
asus p5k ws (p35, integrated realtek alc888 drv. 5.10.0.5591)
XP x64 pro SP2

Particulary fixed by modifying DARE.ini file (\Application Data\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed)
changed
DISABLE_OPTIMISATION=FALSE
to
DISABLE_OPTIMISATION=TRUE
then the game stopped freezing but, instead, it raises an exception and exits to windows every 10 minutes or so..
btw did you all bought the game? Wink

For anyone on Vista and wondering where the Dare.ini file is its (Users/.../AppData/Roaming/Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed/)
Recommend for anyone experiencing slow game play to try this. May work for you, may not.

Update: still does it in DX9 mode, with the ini tweak the games now take longer to load and still does the freezing thing. ARG! I might just go back to bestbuy and return this darn thing if it doesnt work, hopefully they will take it back.

Also I had the game running in a windows mode and had the system processes up. When the game does the freezing thing the CPU drops down to nothing and when the game starts working again it goes back to around 30% ish.

I am running and 512MB 8800 GT SC, an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33MHz, with 2GB of Patriot Gaming Mem. I am running the graphics on default settings basically almost on full quality, and sometimes the game crashes with green or red stripes or checkerboard running down the screen, at first i thought it was my memory voltage down to auto, and that helped a bit, but then it did it again, so i researched and found out that i didnt have the latest version of Microsoft C++ downloaded and that helped (if you do decide to get the latest C++ get the 2008 Ed. x86 that will help with quality as well as performance), but this morning as i was riding on the outskirts of jerusalem it crashed as i engaged with the guards up on the cliff. Personally i Ubisoft needs to put a patch out to fix these problems, but i am here just sharing wat is going wrong.
