I'm getting frequent corruption of in-game sounds in Assassins Creed on my PC. Certain sound effects sound stuttery, as though they are flicking rapidly from the left to right channels. Examples of sounds that are often corrupted include; death screams (ie. when a counter-attack is being executed and the camera is detached), city alarm bells and the chanting of monks from within cathedrals.

It seems to be related to camera movement. Using the chanting monks as an example, if I simply stand still outside a cathedral, the chanting will sound fine, but the moment I start running sideways, the chanting becomes corrupted/stutters.

I'm using a stereo setup (two speakers), with the correct settings in Windows sound CP and my sound drivers. The sound card I'm using is the ASUS Xonar Essence STX, with the latest available drivers installed. My OS is Windows XP x64.

At first I thought it might just be my particular sound card causing the issue, but then I noticed the EXACT SAME corruption on a completely different system (using the onboard sound of a P5Q Pro motherboard).

Anywa, I've tried everything I can think of on my PC including:

- Setting the Windows 'Hardware acceleration' slider to basic.
- Setting the 'NO_OPTIMISATION_SOUND_CARDS' option in DARE.ini to True (it was blank by default).
- Setting 'DISABLE_OPTIMISATION' to False (default = True)
- Messing with my sound card's driver CP, disabling all EAX emulation, Game mode, and other effects.

No matter what I do, the issue is still present.

I need some advice as this issue is really ruining the game for me.

To post DirectX Diagnostic information do the following.

1. Click Start
2. Click Run (if you are on Vista, click into the 'Search Textfield')
3. Type DXDIAG then press ENTER
4. When the DirectX Diagnostic loads, click the "Save All Information" Button.
5. Save the text file to your desktop
6. Locate the text file on your desktop and double-click the file to open it
7. Click on Edit
8. Click on Select All
9. Click on Edit
10. Click on Copy (make sure all of the text is highlighted when you click Copy)
11. Right-click into the textfield of your forum post and click on Paste

This 64bit OS is not supported for use with the title. I cannot provide support for any system that does not fall within the minimum system requirements. This may be the cause of your problems.

go back into dxdiag and set the hardware accelleration to full, you have a dedicated card, setting it to basic is only for onboard sound.

go to the ASUS site and on the downloads for your card there is a 1.0 patch under the drivers, install this. but first make sure the sound driver you ahve installed is Version 5.12.8.1762.

also after that install the patch that is under other, as this fixes problems with EAX due to the changes microsoft made screwing loads of stufff up.


on thing that does concern me tho is your CPU, as if it is realy a pentium 3 xeon (server chip) it is incredibly old and will probly lack loads of the hardware support from P4D's, Intel Core and AMD 64 chips and this could cause any number of problems, before taking into account the dual core will be very poorly optimised so while it may state 3ghz the chip will be running much slower than an equiverlent modern dual core.


I just find it hard to belive you would neglect the CPU when it is the most important part of the computer as it controlls the speed everything else can run at.

Hehe, the CPU is actually a C2D E8600 - a very capable proc. Don't ask me why DXDiag reports it as a Xeon...

I'll simplify my specs for easy reference:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600.
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Premium.
Memory: 2x 2GB Corsair Dominator XMS2 1066 (5-5-5-15).
Graphics: XFX GTX 285.
Hard Drives: 2x Western Digital WD6400AAKS RAID 0 (2x640GB).
Sound: Asus Xonar Essence STX.
O/S: Windows XP Pro x64.

And here are the specs of the other afflicted PC:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400.
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Pro.
Memory: 2x 1GB Corsair Dominator XMS2 800 (4-4-4-12).
Graphics: XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog Edition.
Hard Drives: 1x Western Digital 250GB.
Sound: Onboard Realtek ALC1200.
O/S: Windows XP Pro x64.

The only similarities are the OS and the p45 chipsets, but the same issue is present in both.

I set the H/W acceleration to full, and installed both those patch/updates, but the sound issue is still there.

in the asus sound controle panle try setting the sound to 6 channle (game only suports 5.1) and see if that makes any differance as I am asuming with that card you will be using surround sound

Unfortunately I'm not using a surround setup. The Essence STX is actually an audiophile card targeted at two channel Hi-Fi systems or Headphones.

I have it connected to a stereo amp.

However, I have tried setting the Windows audio CP to surround, and using the card's Dolby Headphone setting with my cans connected directly to the card. Don't know if this would acheive the same result?

Aftermath: (for anyone else who may encounter this issue)

I never managed to fix the corrupted sound in Windows XP x64. However, since switching to Windows 7 x64 (RC1) the issue has been resolved.

your problem is a onboard sound card then, as windows XP runs hardware acccelleration that causes corruption with onboard sound, were vista and Windows 7 uses a new system that bypasses the hardware accelleration in most cards with out a seperate driver fix to enable it (normaly only given out for decent addin cards that shouldnt have this problem anyway)
