Hello, I'm new to these forums.

I have been able to play Assassin's Creed just fine until today. Previously, I had a Nvidia 8600 GTS Factory OCed edition in my comp. I had this problem in AC where it would show this black texture around him and it would lag out my game. I fixed this by lowering my GPU Memory MHz from 1 ghz to 800 mhz.

Today, I went and got a 9600 GT SuperOverclocked Edition. I installed it and its doing just fine.

When I went to play any of my games though (this includes Guild Wars, AC and many other games), they had artifacts and random colered textures in them. I did a DXDiag, but DX said there was nothing wrong. I am again suspecting overclocking, but I tried lowering the MHz of both the GPU and its memory many times already to no effect. So I need some help!

Sorry to triple post, but AC also goes to a black screen now right as I finish loading in that room where all the code is going by. Right when it starts to go to the level, it goes to a black screen and says Assassins Creed quit unexpectedly.
I'm also encountering more problems with my other games. I'm going to try reseting my card, please offer some suggestions :/

believe it or not, it is the 9600GT.
your problem is actually quite common among 9600GT owners.
the card is bullish to begin with, but they overclocked the crapp out of it to fit todays gaming standards. it also has this problem called the "black screen of death" which you have told us that you encountered.

I suggest you get an 8800GT, it is has almost identical specs to the 9600GT except for the Open GL 2.1 support.
and it is much more reliable.

I'm on Vista and the game doesn't fullscreen...this really needs to be fixed. I don't see an option for this in the graphical menu.

Uve got to be kiddning me...god damn it...I was hoping this would be really good investment, but im noticing problems with all my games now.

so an 8800 GT Runs the same or better than the 9600? How much do they cost now?

i got mine for about 180$ US. they are not that much more expensive than a 9600GT.
maybe 20 dollars more.

it runs better actually, and flawlessly. but stay away from the overclocked versions, they always have problems.

See the post by sting_0109 in this thread with nVidia card suggesting to set the pre-rendering to 1 x instead of 3, i hope that helps you.
And you could always lower the mem clock on this 9600GT as well, maybe that helps too.

You should also:
-update your X-Fi Xtreme Audio drivers
-in Windows uninstall the onboard soundchip, then go into your BIOS and disable it.

Right, some pages ago I informed that I couldn't even start the game without a driver reset in DX10 mode or just crash with DX9. Solution was to manually update DX with new runtime installer from MS site. No problems since. SLI working fine as it should.
