Hello people,

I couldn't find a similar enough problem (which is bad) so I had to make a new thread. Here's what happens... I installed TotE after I had installed the first two (they work). When I run the *exe the game starts with the fade and then the big raging orc or whatever. Then the desktop changes its shape (even sometimes becomes a second desktop within the regular one) in a non wide-screen resolution (atleast its height is kept but the width is shortened for what I can tell) and it blackens. I hear the "Ubi tune" but I can't see the video because the "game window" is black and the desktop, which I can see in the background, is refreshing like mad. It's not real refreshing, but I can't describe it any better. Then I can click once to skip the Ubi video and the game responds and switches to the next one (which I don't recognize) but still can't see it. When I click again to skip that too the games stops responding or at least I can't do anything to continue so I kill it.
So it starts regularly, then the blackened "game window" with different resolution and the flickering of the part that's "transparent" where I can actually see my desktop icons and everything, then death.

My laptop handles the other two with no difficulties whatsoever. Not high settings but at low/medium it doesn't get a slowdown.

PS2: For a start, could someone give me their Tribes of the East folder in: *disk volume*:\Documents and Settings\*username*\My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic V.

Try updating to the very latest video driver (169.21) I had exactly the same problem and a similar video card (7600 GS) and this fixed it.

Didn't help. Thanks anyway. Please just someone give me a TotE folder with defined game resolution and everything...

I have the exact same problem, and i use 7600 GS. This problem also appears on original heroes 5 when updated to 1.6. Anyone has an idea what to do? Already tried downloading new drivers.

The thread's first poster has a laptop, and HM&M 5 was not programmed to be compatible with laptop videocards : sometimes it works, many times it refuses to function well. In your case, eldiax, you don't have a laptop, and your videocard drivers are very recent (May 2008).

Basing my opinion on what I have read on this forum for the past 2 years, I remember that the game seemed to cause problems with videocards of the GeForce 7000 series -- which is your case (7600 GS).

I notice that your desktop is set at "Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (75Hz)".

My desktop refresh-rate is set at a lower frequency (60Hz).

Perhaps (hypothetically) ... the game programme does not like your high frequency when it launches. You could try to experiment with lower resolutions (lower than 1280 x 1024) and lower frequencies (but never higher than your 75Hz).

Perhaps the game programme might prefer to launch from a lower set desktop. It is easy to test, using your nVidia Control Panel to execute the resolution & refresh-rate modifications.

Also, launch the nVidia Control Panel. When its window opens, find to the top left "3D Settings" (or its equivalent in another language). Click on it to open the "Manage 3D Settings" sub-menu. To the right, click on the "Global Settings" tab. Go down the list to "Vertical sync", which should be ON by default. Click on the "on", and select "Force off" in the new list. Having that setting off does not hurt, and it does produce better framerates in many games.

My hypothesis is that your relatively high refresh-rate (75Hz) with V sync on might cause a graphical synchronization issue when the game launches and attempts to stabilize in its own resolution/frequency.

If that doesn't work, you might try this, because it has worked for some people -- but it is a more complicated and time-consuming process :

1. Go the nVidia website and find older drivers for your videocard. The website has a section to access older drivers. Download a few of them. Before the May 2008 certified ones, it was the December 2007 drivers. Get those, and even, older ones.

2. Uninstall your current drivers from the Windows add/remove-programs utility. Reboot. Install December 2007 drivers (but don't have an antivirus active while doing that).

3. Test game.

4. If your graphical problem persists, repeat step 2 with drivers older than December 2007.

There is not much else you can do.

Also, what is always prudent when attempting to launch "sensitive" game programmes, is to close (using the Windows Task Manager) all non-essential background processes (NOT the system ones, but the ones with your user name). You MUST keep explorer.exe, though. An antivirus, for example, can interfere with certain sensitive games.

You have to experiment & test by yourself : nobody here can produce a fast magical answer to your particular graphical problem.

I tried everything you said, and I got a glimmer of hope when trying to install the older drivers.

drivers from december 2007 didn't work, I get the same problem, and drivers from may 2007 actually worked, but only once. when I started the game again, I had the same problem.

I'm going to try now with even older drivers if they support my graphics card.

Then, it might be your series 7000 card, which has compatibility issues with the graphical coding of the game (its "engine").

Like I said, I recall having read, during the past 2 years, that some other gamers have encountered problems with their series 7000 videocard.

When they (the Russian programmers of Nival Interactive) coded HM&M 5, in 2004-05, the GeForce line did not go higher than 6800.

Also, I suspect that Nival recycled parts of its graphical engine from its previous games (such as Etherlords 1 & 2), when the GeForce line was even more "primitive".

It is possible that the GeForce series 7000 cards have an internal hardware structure that conflicts with some elements of the Nival graphical engine. Such problems could be solved if Nival worked with nVidia so that drivers could fix (or work around) the issues. But that won't happen. Nival has moved on to other projects.

Have you tried this ? Edit the "properties" of the game's .exe (or of its shortcut) and try the different "compatibility modes". There are 4 : Win 95, Win 98, Win NT, Win 2000. Who knows ? Maybe the game will launch properly under one of those modes. It is easy to try.
