Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to the original poster for the clear instructions and helpful tips on getting the game installed. I was about to tear my hair out after I went out and bought the retail version, after I couldn't get the old Boonty download version to install. Then the retail version I just bought wouldn't install right!

Now I'm all installed and patched up.

i have the same error about patching, the "heroes v not found, patch not installed" something like that error, turn out that all the US version of the patch didn't work, but the EU version worked. Funny.....

maybe it's just as simple as finding the right patch for your homm5.

i'm posting this after spending 5 hours trying to install the wrong patch.

I use the Security mode of windows to install the game, and that solve my problem with the black screen!

Nothing funny there, but your are correct :

It is simply a case of finding the right patch version for your specific edition of the game.

A "US" edition requires a [...]_us.exe type of patch. A "EU" edition requires a [...]_eu.exe type of patch. A European Collector edition, would require a [...]_eu_collector.exe patch.
