(EDIT: Changing to use F4F-3 or IAR-80 instead of I-185. See below).
OK I'm editing my original idea. I just thought of using the F4F-3 Wildcat instead. I haven't even looked for RAF skins for it. I wonder if anyone would like to do some skins of the F4F-3 in the RAF SEAC green/brown camo schemes for the Burma theater to match the Hawks pictured below... The vast majority of Mohawks were painted in US equivalent Dark Earth/Dark Green over Medium Sea Grey. Because the markings on Mohawks are not particularly intensive, there is room for 8 schemes on this sheet. First is the lone dark earth/midstone over azure blue aircraft from 1 OTU of the Indian AF that was 'diverted' to the RAF. Next is a 5 Sq aircraft from the early war years and the retreat of the British out of Burma. From 5 Sq as well is the next plane with a small nose art of 'the saint' on it. This aircraft has yellow wing tips and a small yellow leading edge band on the outer wing panels. A 155 Sq plane is next, coded white Y. In addition to the small nose art the lower cowling is yellow This is the 'Mohawk Wing' commander's plane of William Pitt-Brown, hence the WPB on the fuselage. Note that it has no sky fuselage band or lower cowling yellow. White B is yet another 155 Sq Mohawk. Few 155 Sq planes carried the DG code given to it. With an early SEAC roundel is White H-, also from 155 sq in Mid 1943. It was made simply by painting out anything red. Finally another 155 sq aircraft with a yellow surround to the fuselage SEAC roundel. This message has been edited. If I may ask, are you looking to fly online or offline?

The I-185 is nowhere near the Hawk-75 in performance flying characteristics or anything other then radial engine. Remember the evolution of this Curtis fighters: Hawk-75-->P-40B/C-->P-40E/M The I-185 completely dominates this entire series of Curtis fighters. No matter how you look at it The I-185 is not a hack for the Hawk. If you still want to do it....The 185/M-71 has a lot more power then the 185/M8-82. Something close would be the Iar-81A or something in that range. Even the IAR is way faster. Ki-27 comes close in performance but not guns. I'd say look in the "Il-2 compare" and see what comes close in performance and start from there.

Hmm, decisions, decisions. Oleg doesn't give me much choices. Thanks for everything else Oleg. Anyway, Jaws2002 I think you're right about the IAR-80 being a better choice. The size and armament is more comparable with the Hawk. I still think the I-185 looks more like it, although smaller in size. The performance and armament makes me change my choice of planes. I think I'd rather go with the IAR-80. Thanks Jaws. You convinced me. Now I just need some RAF skins for it. Anyone interested? |

Why not just use the Hawk 81A? I know you are wanting the radial engine look, but nothing "flyable" in the boxed game will come closer apart from the engine type. The others you are considering wouldn't do it for me especialy as you will probably be in the driving seat. By the way I haven't checked the performance of the P36 and P40 Hawk 81A I'm just assuming they will be quite close.

I don't want to use the P-40. It is way faster than the Hawk and its best tactics vs. Japanese fighters is boom and zoom. The Hawk is more maneuverable in horizontal dogfights and that's why I would prefer something like the IAR. The IAR-80's machineguns are more like the Hawks so I would prefer the -80 over the -81A.
VPmedia did an IAR hack for a French fighter and there is also a Dutch fighter on Flying-Legends. ***************************************** I just thought of using the F4F-3 Wildcat instead. F4F-3 1200 hp speed @6000m 526 km/h climb 13.9 m/s Turn 19.6 sec Dive 820 km/h Hawk 1200 hp speed @5000m 517 km/h climb 14.56 m/s Turn 18.93 sec Dive 600 km/h Close in performance except for the dive speed since the Wilcat is heavier. Wildcat also has 50cal machineguns compared to the Hawk's 30cals. At least it doesn't have the cannons like the IAR-81. Anyone interested in making F4F-3 RAF SEAC skins to resemble the Hawks pictured above? This message has been edited. Last edited by: CzechTexan, |

Thanks Goodwood_Alpha. That sounds great. But how do I get "modded" and where can I get it?
That's all new to me so I really don't understand it. Nice dusty desert P-40 skins by the way. ************ update: OK Someone gave me a tip on where to find it so I'll look into it. Now I just need some HAWK skins This message has been edited. Last edited by: CzechTexan, |
