Hey, I was looking back at the Flying Legends site, and there are only 10 skins for the P-63. I think most even date back to 2005. Has anyone made any recent skins for the P-63?

Also, can someone make a skin similar to this one?

I don't care about its markings or numbers being completely accurate, and I know there are skins on that site that look kind of like that, but I don't see any with that dark color.

That one looks great, but it seems more green that the brown one in the photo.

The brownish color is what you get when the paint fades from sun exposure. New planes were more greenish in color. IMO.

I hear ya mbm003. The cobras are my favorite planes. I think the KingCobra has few skins because there are few pics and references for skinners to go by. Not long ago I found some French skins (post-war 1945-53 era) that look really nice. I"m not sure if they are on M4T or Flying-Legends though. I could email them if you'd like.

Yeah I know what you mean about the P-63. Just not very many skins made for these planes. I guess there weren't too many interesting schemes for them and very few photos or schemes to show. I'd love to see a few more attempts at some fantastic looking templates with basic VVS markings for missions use. I think there are some out there but I haven't tried to track one down recently.

You'd probably see more P-63s if the mapping wasn't completely different from the P-39.

I think it's because of lack of good references and variety of paint schemes. The mapping on the P-63 model is actually quite easy to work with and lacking the warping, mirroring and other crud everyone puts up with on other planes (like the Spitfire and B-17).

Since they were used more for a training role by the US, they typically didn't get the neat group, squadron and individual markings that we see on other planes. The majority of the P-63s that saw any action were used by the Soviets and photographic documentation (especially anything readily available in the west) is slim.

Sad, really. It's actually quite a good ride in the game, though the armament is a bit light for my taste.

I don't think Gibbage had access to the original P-39 model when he did the P-63. Its such a wildly different aircraft anyways that making the UV map work may have been pretty complicated. Not sure since I'm not an expert modeler or UV mapper.

Definitely would have made things easier...

I guess all that the skinners could do is produce some reasonably accurate examples from imagination. I think thats mostly what we've seen now. I went looking for profiles and found almost nothing sadly...

Which pretty much means no one will be working on this plane anytime soon, eh?

I would give it a go again if I had more (and you knew I was gonna say it!) more documentation of their services in the Soviet Union. All I got now is a skin pack I released last year at Flying Legends for some Fictional USAAF Group based in the CBI. Story goes that one particular US Congressmen wanted the Army to base a unit of P-63's in combat that are produced in his state.

Soooooo anyhow, back to the USSR use, if anyone has any info about unit use I'd make some new skins for release. Thumbs Up

I looked at the Hobbyvista VVS website and found this one:

Just wonder if this one has been skinned??
I also sent an email to the site owner and asked if he had any more info for us. Maybe he can give us something to go on.

Here is something I did several months ago. Pure conjuncture as for unit markings, but also nice in my opinion. Wink2

I did the airfield in the background as well. I dig that castle I made too! Winky

NIIiice! Smile

Keep doing stuff like that (the castle too Big Grin))...fictional but realistically put together would be fine. Mark it as such and I figure everyone would be happy.
