HobbyVista has been something of a gold mine for my quest to make some good P-39 skins. Here's the first offering in what will hopefully be a nice series (and hopefully no one's already done these).

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads2&file=details&id=3749

This P-39D-2 served with 2nd GSAP in the winter of 1942/43.

Based on photographs and profile art found at HobbyVista, this skin represents one of a number of Airacobras that were painted with All Aluminum lacquer finish over the standard U.S. Olive Drab and Neutral Gray given to Lend-Lease aircraft sent to the USSR. This particular machine flew with 2nd GSAP during the winter of 1942/43; though other aircraft of that unit were marked in red numerals, photographic evidence seems to indicate that this one was given white ID codes with a red drop-shadow.

P-39Q "Rebenok Kieva" "Child of Kiev" 196 IAP

Another HobbyVista-inspired skin, this aircraft represents a later-model P-39 that flew with 196 IAP some time during 1944. Its faded ID code, "White 119" is suplimented by "Rebenok Kieva" ("Child of Kiev") written on the nose, along with an Order of Lenin badge. Though the actual pilot is unknown, this machine could be the mount of VVS Lt. Skulski, who hailed from that city. Finish is standard OD Green over Neutral Gray with All Green over the old upper-surface and side U.S. insignia and blue over the underside, underneath the red Soviet stars. The spinner appears to have been left unpainted.

Though the actual mark of this aircraft is unknown, what is known about it matches the P-39Q-10 as seen in the game.

Both skins made with Jesters-Ink's original template with internals by Kamikuza and Fly-By-Shooter.

Very nice work there Mate, I especially like the No.95 Skinned D2. Beauty!

EDIT:

Just noticed something, where the red star meets the rudder on the vertical stabiliser, is half of it supposed to be missing?

Yes, it's supposed to be missing. Apparently this aircraft got a replacement rudder at some point (at least that's what it looks like from the photo).

Glad you llke'em!

As an addendum to Red/White 95 as posted above, we have:

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads2&file=details&id=3752

A five-pack of skins representing other machines of 2 GSAP

Yet more data from HobbyVista provides samples for this four-pack of skins for the P-39D-2/P-400. Two of these skins, such as "Red 60" and "Red 79" are historical, however an additional two semi-historical skins, "Red 87" and "Red 96", fill out the rest of the Zveno.

Original template by Jesters-Ink with internals by Fly-By-Shooter and Kamikuza. A skin with national markings has been provided for use by mission and campaign builders.

Whipped this one up after surfing Wings Palette (yeah, that smarmy, dodgy Russian site Wink ), having been desirous of making a Pacific-based Airacobra. Hope you like!

Great work - I've been looking for more with USSR markings. I will download as soon as M4T is back up.

Ex-British P-400 (Airacobra I) flying out of New Guinea in 1942.

Based on a profile by Thierry Dekker, this P-400 was flown by Richard Suehr with the 39th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group before his transfer, with his aircraft, to the 80th FS, 8th FG at Milne Bay, New Guinea, 1943. The plane still carries its ex-RAF registration number of AH736.
