Hi;

Any skinners interested in painting some WW-
II era fighters and bombers of Turkish Air Force?

Until I post some pics and photos about paints and camo you can download "TAF Airplane Album" which contains every single airplane that served from 1912 until today.It is hand drawn,not a piece of art but gives a clear idea about paints.

Here is the link;
http://www.hvkk.mil.tr/PageSub/CokluOrtam/HavacilikKose...ageItems/Tayyare.pdf

Pics from the Album;

Some Photos of P-47 from AirForce Museum;

I could make the canon-armed Hurricane for you if you want one. Are there any particular colours for the Turkish AF, or should I use RAF colours with the markings painted over?

Did you know that one of the few Turkish Spitfires actually originally was painted in Polish colours as the only one ever.

I would be glad if you paint one;actually there aren't much info about colors of Hurricanes,photo album is what we have paints in color.and I don't think that in wartime they changed the original paints on Hurricanes.

For markings and numbering on Hurricane;if it's possible,can you weather them a bit and use that yellow 13 numbering?

@RAF_Loke

I searched the net but failed to find anything about it.Do you have any info?As far as I know camos on TAF Spits varies greatly,there isn't any consistency.

Thanks.

No problem (my template is rather heavily weathered in the first place). Apart from the nr. 13 in yellow lettering, is there a particular registration number you want for your Hurricane, or should I just give it a random number? Do you want overpainted RAF roundels like on Russian Hurricanes?

Here the history of the first Spitfire, which was to take part in Polish Campain`39 but never eached Poland.

At may 1939 a few Polish officers went to Great Britain to select English planes to buy. Poles ordered 100 Fairey Battle bombers, 14 Hawker Hurricane and one Supermarine Spitfire fighter.

At may 1939, when Polish oficers ordered theese planes list of countryes, wchich wanted to buy Spitfire was very long (Finland, France, Estonia, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Greece), but British agreed to send to Poland as primary.

Only two Spitfires were exported for abroad before the war. One to France and one to Poland. Spitfire, which was to be sent to Poland had RAF no.L1066 (factory np.281). L1066 had first flight at 21.07.1939. Also one of the best Polish pilots plk. (col.)Boleslaw Orlinski did a flights on L1066 at summer 1939. At 31.07 L1066 was delivered to 36.Maintenance Unit, where was stocked at ship (also with 25 Battle`s and probably Hurricanes).

First course of ship was planned to Baltic sea, where could go to Poland, but later Englishs decided to send it to Poland by Roumania becouse of risk of Germans U-Boots . This freighter ship was covered by Polish destroyer ORP Blyskawica. At 22.09 theese two ships reached Giblartar, but Roumania did not let to transfer wapon to Poland by its territory.

In that case L1066 was send to Turkey, which ordered 15 this fighters.

(In fact only 3 were delivered) All three Turkey Air Force Spitfires were used in 42.Av Boluk VIII .Av Taboru 4ncu Hava Alay (42.Fighter Company Unit of 4.Fighter Reg.)at Corl near Stanbul. L1066 had in Turkey number 2901.

42.Company Unit used also Polish production PZL P.24 and Hurricanes.

All three Turkish Spitfires were used to 1940,becouse they didn`t had so much parts.

PAINTING AND MARKING OF SPITFIRE MK.I NO.L1066

L1066 had standard RAF camuflage of type A or B.

Most probably had Polish insignias on the wings and tail (similar as Spitfire sent to France)but its also probably that L1066 had no insignias or only civilian numbers(?). Exploitation common markings could be orginal English or Polish (the same as ordered Hurricanes, which also never reached Poland).

Actually I don't know how overpainted RAF roundels looks like;for numbering and reg. no.
,Is it possible for you to create no.13 with random reg. no. and a blank skin without number and reg. no.?

@ RAF_Loke

Thanks for spending your time for the awesome info.

Thanks for the interesting story, RAF-Loke!

Mustafa, the roundels painted over can be seen on the default Hurricane Mk. IIb skins in-game. Make a quick mission with Hurricane Mk. IIb, select USSR as country and have a look at the default skins. You’ll see that the standard RAF markings have been painted over in green paint, and red stars applied on top of them. Do you want the same painted out British markings with Turkish markings painted over, or just camouflage with Turkish markings on top?

Here is something interesting I found while searching for photos about TAF Hurries;

TAF Hurries piloted by RAF pilot engaging Axis aircraft along the Bulgarian border.

"He remained for eight months, during which he flew operational patrols along the Bulgarian border. He twice intercepted Italian S-84 reconnaissance aircraft intruding across the border, and shot them both down in a Turkish Hurricane, while wearing civilian clothes."

Source:
Flieger Revue Extra 12, March 2006. Article by Tuncay Deniz, "Die Türkische Luftwaffe im Zweiten Weltkrieg"

This German language magazine is worth getting for anyone interested in the Turkish A F during WW2. There are unfortunately few sources available in English or German.

Enjoy

Right, lets see...

I've made two earth brown/dark green Turkish hurricanes, one unmarked, one with a large yellow "13" on the fuselage. In addition I've made Hurricane in desert camo, no number, but with the serial HL988, like the last one you posted.

Mustafa, could you PM me your e-mail address?

Hi Gladiator!

Do you have a date for the picture? It has a very distinct camo (not the standard RAF paint) and different markings to the drawings Mustafa posted.
