Hi! I'm a new FarCry player and have a couple of questions.

1) Can people who have different mods or patches installed play with each other online?
2) Does the multiplayer server list automatically filter out servers that are for different patch/mod versions?
3) How many people are playing using the Xv4 patch? Will it be harder for me to find a match if I install it?
4) Which patch/mod has the most number of players listed in the in-game multiplayer UI?
5) Do a lot of people play using the Assault Coop mod? Will it harm anything, such as my ability to play online, if I install it?

Thanks!

-Mike

1 no. Must have the same mod or patch as the server.
2. yes for patches, no for mods.
3. The last official patch was 1.4 so I would think you should be able to find a game running that version. I am not sure how many people play each version anymore. It used to be about equal numbers of 1.33 and 1.4
4. see 3 (I have not played for many months now).
5. Co-op mode was never correctly implemented and it will break the single player game. Any mods you have running will prevent you from playing online unless the server is also running that mod. You should be able to switch mods on and off by restarting the game with the appropriate mod selected.

Most people play with 1.4 (I'm quite sure at this, haven't used the 1.33 one for ages)

And the 1.4 is stable so I don't know why one shouldn't use it.

Thank you kindly for the replies! Smile

One more question: are most of the servers currently located in Europe? I've noticed this with other games--as they get older the userbase shifts more toward Europe as North Americans upgrade to newer games. The reason I ask is that for some reason I get pings in the 150-300 range for most servers, and the servers with pings below 100 are always empty.

[edit]
For reference, I live in Indiana. I pinged www.indiana.edu and got 25ms. I also pinged www.jolt.co.uk and got 115ms.

I take it as you're from the US?

Many servers are indeed from Europe but there are some servers from the US running as well. Played between 5-6AM once and there were only 3 peps playing worldwide, so those in and close to my timezone seems to be those who play the most. (I'm from Sweden, GMT 1+

Sad but true, try to find a server with as low ping as possible and stick to it.

EDIT: Oh, you edited it while I wrote x)

Check the edit I made to my previous post for location/ping information.

If you would provide a link to a Swedish website, I will try pinging it too.

[edit]
I pinged www.ubi.com and got an average of 49ms.

Lol I thought it said "indien" and I was like, Wuht?

Anyways, I don't have any solution for you, sorry. Just try to find the best you can. 115 is still playable I think?

EDIT:
http://www.sf.se/

Is that one OK?

Yes, 115ms is playable!

However, in the game itself more than half the servers are above 250ms and I frequently get kicked.

Maybe there is a firewall/router issue? How do I fix it?

Sorry, but I can't force the US to begin playing far cry, and apart from that there's no solution except just trying to find the best you can.

I don't think it's got anything to do with that. Rather distance

I used to play Homeworld 2 on the same internet connection and usually got below 100ms. However, FarCry is the first game I've played since I got my router. (The router is a wireless-g router, but I am plugged directly in.) Maybe that is the problem?

If you wait until tomorrow I'm sure fabulouscoops
will have the answer to your questions, he's been playing and fixing farcry since 2004

Try to find an FTP test located in your country to test your internet connection's speed.

Microsoft's server in Sweden, should work.

But try to measure your connection speed.

Is www.speedtest.net OK? I clicked the Cincinnati, Ohio icon and did the test. The results were 1240 kbps download and 311kbps upload.

That should work fine.

That speed isn't very good though. Do you know what you're paying for?

The ping utility doesn't like the first link, and the second one timed out. It's not really that important, anyway.

Nah, but anyways, I tried with a server at the other side of earth and my results were 4000kbps down and 460 up

I think you should get more. I'm paying for 8mbit.

EDIT: Ping was 220ms, the server was somewhere in Alaska.

The service (ATT Yahoo!) is for up to 1.5 Mbps download and up to 384 Kbps upload. The price just went up from $19 to $25 dollars a month. Ping is more important, isn't it?

Thanks for your help!

This is my last post, after this I'm leaving

Your speed isn't very fast so I think that decreases your ping. The distance doesn't really help. Only way to reduce ping should be upgrading your broadband to a higher speed, but it's not worth it.

That's ****ing cheap thou x) far more expensive in Sweden, I pay 75bucks/month...a little more actually...
