I just downloaded this free version, and I have to say that I'm quite impressed with this game. True, it doesn't quite allow multiplayer, but there are mods out there that let you play a multiplayer game. I'm talking about the Coop Mod for FarCry by Flameknight97, that I just installed last night. With this mod, you can create a LAN game and add bots to the game. In addition to the incredibly stupid oversight of not mentioning whether multiplayer is supported (which it should in order to bolster the lifespan of the FC multiplayer community), there is another thing that they've done that pisses me off:

Discontinued support for 64 bit FC despite the big hubbub about working in conjunction with AMD for a 64 bit version with enhanced textures and whatnot.

The 64 bit patch from amd-downloads only works for version 1.32, and the free version of FC probably wouldn't even support it anyway.

This pisses me off. I highly doubt that the difference between 1.32 and 1.4 is significant enough to require massive recoding of anything. They shouldn't even bother to release a 64-bit edtion if they don't actually intend to treat it as a worthwhile product.

Nope. There isn't any *actual* in-game advertising as such. There is, however, a nauseatingly lame animation that plays before any level loads for McDonalds (and one-time refreshed ad banners during menus).

Also, when loading a save game after death, there is a false loading time to let the commercial sink in. It isn't that long, but it is there.

The ad shows some incredibly lame looking early 20's guy twiddling his noob thumbs on a console controller.
"When it comes to video games, there's never a shortage of competition."
Camera pans out to show some stupid kid playing the game alongside him.
"At the toy store."
Then it goes on to talk about the dbl cheesburger on the dollar menu and refers to us as "dollar menunaires".

I don't see what there is about that ad that does anything whatsoever to spark interest or amusement in me. It's like they had absolutely no idea what to do at all to create an interesting ad and just threw the first "idea" they got at Ubi. If anything, this ad makes me want to NOT go to McDonalds EVER.

I really want to vomit and the only consolation I have is that I have somehow been able to communicate the true lameness of this ad to you.

It seems that you only care for the multiplayer, in which case you can either buy the game (which is really dirt cheap), see if Ubisoft suddenely gives away CD-keys (I don't think it's probable, but hey, who knows), download the also free Ghost Recon instead (which has multiplayer, no CD key needed), or not play Far Cry at all. If we suddenly are provided a way to play online, great, if not, I'm more than happy with what I have.

I agree with you. However, the fact that they said that the game was completely free and didn't mention any limitations left me a bit disappointed when I got to the multiplayer menu.

They did that so that more people would DL it.

Hey, at least mods work. I'm surprised about that.

......... I did go have a look at the info. offered to the individuals interested in Downloading the "FREE" game and Honestly the basic wording is a bit misleading..... But unfortunately, this will not likely be resolved anytime soon, if ever. Using the track record of how well the issues of FarCry have been resolved previously, those same persons whom could have corrected these problems, will likely perform their infamous disappearing act, just as they have done on numerous occasions before to those of us who actually "PAID" for the game!

.......... But I'm no hater, maybe they'll surprise us all and actually complete something they started! As a few others have already stated, this could have the potential for a real nice Promotional Tool for their FarCry 2 which is set to release sometime early next year......... Besides I'm tired of the same 8 people killing me each time I log online, so maybe some new meat would be nice! I havent got a Kill since the v1.1 patch, so I'm getting pretty desperate here!

bummer..as of today ...cut and pasted ..

All downloaded files which have not been activated are going to be made inactive through the ubi.com login. Previously, the ubi.com login would require a US country in order to install the game. Ubisoft will make the ubi.com login reject all entries into country. They hope to relaunch the program once we can add IP-blocking into our login process.

so ya cant get a cd key for multi player..but it still works on lan with no cd key as i tried it here after patching my other machine that i do own a copy of far cry for

saw that just before the file disappeared off file planet

so i do belive thats not from the DEV team ..but from file planet and the advertising team that set up the failed free game stuff

what they can do (the DEV TEAM) is open the flood gates and make a patch that no longer requires a cd key , similar to SOF 1 Platinium did

but then the hackers will just have a hey day and cheating will abound ..much like it does in the SOF 1 community .. it is sad ...

face it.. if ya got the game for free ..it works single player ..and multiplayer BUT on only a lan connection .. ya still got one of the best games ever made for PC for free and with a router or hub ya can play multiplayer with your friends anyway

would i like another cd key? ..sure! then i'd give my GF my copy and she could play online with me ..like thats gonna happen?.. LOL

but hell the game only cost like 10 bucks now .. i'll buy another ..also thats some advise if ya can buy it buy it now ...get a legit cd key and a boxed version .. saw SOF 2 dry up right away last year now ya cant find a legit copy ..and it's always good to have a legit copy of a game ya love playing

it is good PR tho to give away the single player portion only away as it's gonna spark more interest in crysis as well as far cry2

so that possibly all this was ..publicity for the 2 new games crytech has done and hopes to sell and become the TOP game studio

really it's illegal to false advertise if it says full-game it needs all the same stuff as the retail version if it doesn't then ubi Macdonald's or fileplanet can be sued really it doesn't matter if it's free not not false advertising is a crime. so if you want some money for suing a company go right ahead you really can't loss.

also cd-keys should have been a tab next to the download or should have been placed on the read me files.

also one of those 3 groups should give out the cd-keys or face criminal charges.

Actually, it would be a tort (a civil wrong not resulting from a contract), not a crime. Civil matters and criminal matters are separate, that is how OJ can be guilty in civil court and innocent in criminal court. The problem would be proving damages, all we are out would be our time, no damages would be awarded even if someone brought the matter to a court.

Civil court is designed to make people whole, not as financial wealth by litigation.

Now does anyone have a link to the article about how they will be resuming the free games? I have some I downloaded and have not installed yet.

I'm just upset because It says I don't live in the US. (Which I do) Las Vegas baby! Could someone send me an IM or email when the add supported is back up. It took a long time to download a 2.6 gig game on 56k and now it says you don't live in the US so it won't install.

Thanks to Hervig it has come to my attention that if you try to enable Far Cry multiplayer in the ad version with a valid CD key you may get kicked/banned for having different sized data files (due to the ads).

I don't know if it's even possible to do this, but I thought I should warn you all.

Thats incorrect. The PAK files are exactly the same as the 1.4 patch files, they have not been touched as its the first thing I checked when I downloaded the free version. The ads are located in a DLL and Bin32 folder and are not part of the FCData folder, so thats not the reason as to why you cant connect properly.

Even if you do get CDKeys, the build of the engine DLLs is different, as they needed to alter it to allow lanching the DFHEngine.dll which is the advertising DLL, so even if you got legite keys from UBI for the retail or this free version, you still cant join servers anyway. You cannot hack, remove or alter the DFHEngine.dll nor cryengine.dll as you will still have a DLL mismatch and the servers wont allow you to join nor login.

Yes the editor is in the product and we will support the Editor on Crymod, however, we will not support anyone trying to circumvent the ads or CDkey Process or help them get online in MP mode as it would be an infringment of the EULA.

Well you can play online with a CDKey. I used my friends who doesnt play his anymore and i got on servers just fine. Except there is like 0 American servers and like the rest are French/EU servers. So you'll get kicked for high ping.

Took me forever to download Far Cry and Ghost Recon from plugged servers. (ad-supported versions)

This might be the lamest thing Ubi's pulled yet.

And you didnt copy over any files at all from the original game? Thats very strange because I know 4 people that couldnt get it to connect. Unless of cource they changes the free download build?

i have a legit version of far cry patched to 1.4

5 cds and a cd key ..yes the ad version i installed on my secondary machine ..

connects just fine to the lan game i just made

there is no difference in the build number between the machines .. but i have no secondary cd key for online multiplayer for the ad supported version

like i said if it works for lan games i'm happy .. i'll buy the game for 10 bucks if i ever need a second cd key

people should buy the game if they want online multiplayer .. i think it's kinda great that they gave away the single player game and the ability to play lan games

but yes i agree file planet should provide everyone with free cd keys as they did advertise it as the "FULL" free game

by the way file shack is also saying full free game and it is still available there
