... as the Vacation Bible School director for a three church charge, you design a room after a FC map!
One of the many things I do is write and produce Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs. I got tired of these mamby-pamby come in, sit at a table and cut and paste and eat cookies VBS programs. My programs are deep immersions into detailed sets and costuming. I know they work, because a lot of kids keep coming back, even when they're in college. Anyway, one room was to represent Brazil, in the jungle..jungle!, yes, what better to represent the jungle than an Amazon ruins... a' la Catacombs. So I got some heavy duty 12x14 ft cardboard from a container company and built a Catacomb room. Here be the entrance: I removed the plastic flourescent light covers, and replaced with cardboard painted to look like the ceiling, then cut out holes, with Spanish moss, leaves and roots.. and 2 Trigens ;-) The ambience is misleading in the pics. In reality, it was rather dark and spooky, but I needed more light to shoot a video sequence. Inside, I built cardboard support columns, imbedded with moss and grass. My niece pictured, was sort of a Ms. Croft character. Hmmm, I wonder what the Pastor would of thought if he knew I used a FPS computer game for Bible School? Na, he wouldn't mind.. not after he had 2 tours in 'Nam.. Hmmm, maybe that's why he got a little jumpy going in there. How do you know when you've played FC too much? See cross hairs on people's foreheads? Throw rocks before you round a corner at night.. Wear Hawiian shirts year round? Cpt Long USA, Ret. |

No. There's a company called Stumps. They provide decorative materials for proms. Its paper. We glued bits of moss and grass along the lines between the rocks to give it a more three dimensional; look. We also lined the ledges with life-like lizards, frogs and parrots. Couldn't find any rubber trigens.

Very nice! I thought you were talking about a virtual space when you said VBS (Virtual Bible Space) I know you design maps, so naturally, a catecombs map seemed reasonable.
Nice job. |

LOL, I was thinking the same when I started to read this thread. Nice to know some pastors aren't quick to condemn the grim reality of war depeicted in some video games, or at least that's what you seem to be hinting at. I'm sure if some of those whom are quick to judge the effects of many a war style video game were to spend some time in the environs those that fought and died for freedom did they might think otherwise. Fantastic job on the set, you are continuing to be the "Cpt" Amazing superhero of Far Cry both in and out of the game experience. The detail on the rock is very 3 dimensional looking. In playing some of the newer custom sp map releases for Far Cry, many of which are mods, I have felt a new found appreciation for some of the more challenging moments that are possible via some creative use of the game's elements, as some of these maps/mods have some rather daunting moments. It's ironic that I was just musing yesterday over the same title you used in this thread. My times I think I've been playing FC too much are when after clearing a difficult section of a custom map with few checkpoints is when I'm not sure whether those faint merc taunts in the distance are real or just my thinking about the ones I already encountered. Then I have to wear my Hawaiian shirt of course to play a title like Mischief In Paradise, just to get the full effect. I'm having a blast with this rekindling of the game via custom maps/mods and have found new funny things happening. In Atoll I was sent flying over 100 feet in the air after hiding in a shack by a dock while shooting the oncoming attack chopper with the rocket launcher. The weird thing is I suffered no damage and was barely able to avoid the dock and landed in the water. It's not a fluke either, happens every time and I have a video of it. Mischief In Paradise has some odd things happening too, like mercs flying 50 feet when you shoot them point blank with the shotgun (some of the guns are modded though). Then there's Deepcover where in the start of it's part 2 if you use the Buggy to drive around the fence via the slope to the left of it you can drive it under water in some gullies on the way to the next camp. For some reason it no longer functions that way when you get to the lake at the camp though. I have become a Far Cry junky all over again with these beautiful works of art. My hat is off to all those that take the time to make them. |

As for my pastor, he had 2 tours in Vietnam, was then a NY deputy Sheriff, then a corrections officer, before becoming a pastor. He's not real crazy about some of the violent games, but since he's seen and done the real thing, he realizes the difference between flesh and pixels. Not to get too off topic, but it takes a screwed up person to be insired to shoot his classmates. Its not the game that inspires them.
I agree that user maps are a good way to maintain interest in a game. I started mapping FC, but gave up after awhile. I made 80 detailed maps of Doom2, Duke and Unreal, so I got a little burned out over the years. Have you played a game in the rain yet? Pretty funny. I enjoy replaying the originals, using alternate approaches. Made the River climb to the mortar position past the suspension bridge you mentioned. It was fun to lay fire on the landing chopper! Also, to go all the way around and snipe Crow from behind. Cpt Long USA, Ret. |

You've played Far Cry too much when you find yourself trying to move around the desktop with the A,S,D keys.

Another one. You've played Far Cry too much when you let Win Media Player Library install Vals voice in your music list,
and you're sitting there late one night browsing the web, and listening to music, when Val suddenly crys out, "JACK ! IT'S NOW OR NEVER !", and your fingers immedialtly jump to the A,S,D keys. |

That climb by the bridge is incredibly easy isn't it? The sniping spots on that side at and near the end camp offer excellent vantage points too. I think I found a map series you probably can't finish with machete only. It's made by none other than Gary Fowler and it's called Explore. Explore comes in 3 parts, is incredibly massive in scale, and offers innovative challenges and awesome terrain. You can literally spend hours on each part the first time through. It's very open ended with many options to achieve the objectives. Explore and Ascent are true climbers maps. The terrain is very mountainous, steep, and has paths and roads that some dare not try with the Buggy for fear of falling to their death. The ending of Explore is truly amazing, a must play, heart palpitating thrill ride! NOTE: If you haven't played Explore and decide to give it a go, make sure you collect all the key cards and explosive packs in part 2 before continuing to part 3. BTW, not sure what you meant by "have I played a game in the rain yet." Are you talking about that tweak you can do to add rain to the game? If so, I decided I didn't want to try it because there's no sound to it. Line of Sight Vietnam has some pretty good stealth jungle stuff in and out of the rain, as well as at night with a night vision scope on the rifle, pretty cool and tough to play. OK, back to the topic, you know you've played Gary's Far Cry maps too much when you start having vertigo flashbacks from all the extreme cliff edge alpine terrain he builds. |

Do you have a link to that "Explore" map? It sounds incredible and I would love to try it out. Just got Far Cry and I love it. You played too much FC, when you can't concentrate on work and have to roam about the FC forums. heh |

LOL, just don't let the boss catch ya using the work station for gaming. The best source by far for all your Far Cry custom maps and mods is Far Cry Community Maps, run and funded by Slugworth whom drops in here occasionally. His site has a very nicely laid out forum and comment board for all the downloadable files. You get best service if you donate and slightly better than non registered if you register. Slugworth is so respected that even sites like CryMod don't post all the Far Cry maps just to honor his work. The comment board is also handy for getting tips if you're stuck and the authors quite often post there. Far Cry Community Maps |

WOW, that is absolutely sensational!
Fantastic work there, I can really see the catacomb theme there! You did that all by yourself? How long did it take?
| AMD 3500 | 6800GT 256MB | 2 GIGs RAM | 232 GB HD |
|

Yes his Canal level was truly amazing, but quite unique vs the game's Catacombs level. Matthias has a small crew but mainly just for a few weapon and other skins and testing purposes. As far as I know he does all the actual map layout himself. If you check the readme for the mod it indicates the following on build time, in typical Matto humor: "Time to build: 1 year, 7 months and 4 days--->583 days, damn I want my wages!" |

You played FC too much, when you wake up thinking about yesterday's game and what tactic you should try today. LOL
I think I even dreamed about FC and thought it was real. hehe |
