The 1.4 patch is cumulative. The game needs to be patched to run on most newer systems.
Make sure you have AMD's Dual Core Game Patch from AMD.com installed. If your PC is a desktop, go to Nvidia.com and download the latest video drivers for your video card.If laptop, contact laptop manufacturer for new video drivers.
Another thing is-Far Cry was written for XP. I don't know if it will run on Vista. It may run in Compatability mode under Vista, you will have to try it and see.

I'm a bit late here, but I run Vista Home Premium and installed Far cry straight away, set it to compatibility mode and has always been absolutely terrific.
My new pc has a very high spec and seems to have brought out of Far Cry much I didn't know existed with my old XP pc.
My problem now is I can't get past Reality level "Research". (See my recent question in this forum).
