Yes, I think it's a tad cliche, lame, and corny, but that's one small negative factor in an absolute flood of amazing original revolutions and new ground in this game! I just ended up getting used to his voice, and it's now a trademark of "Jack!" When playing Matto 4 I was stunned when I heard a European accent come through my speakers.. | AMD 3500 | 6800GT 256MB | 2 GIGs RAM | 232 GB HD |
| AMD 3500 | 6800GT 256MB | 2 GIGs RAM | 232 GB HD |
|

@kuo - so was I!....lets say no more about that ;0. yer, I used to strongly dislike jacks voice, then I realized, if you take that away, you'd probably have to make the graphics look more serious....and edit the mercs saying things like "suck this..." "how'd you like THOSE apples".....the trigens (yeah i like them) and a whole load of other things that make the game more 'fun' than a serious jungly fps. Wouldn't be farcry without dumbass, cocky and surprisingly stealthy Jack for me. |

LOL, I was just going to say I thought this thread was misplaced and intedned to be about Matto4's Jack.
Personally I like the stock game's voice acting overall, very professional and humorous in spots without being borish. The only thing I grow tired of is all the mercs using taunts, which gives away their posistion. They are nice to have when you want to play just for fun, as they're quite amusing, but when you want max challenge they get ridiculous. Too bad they didn't include a taunt disabler like UT has. It would have served both difficulty level and parental control purposes. |

I LOVE all the merc jive and I've been using many of their choicest lines on my girlfriend during love-making for the last couple years.
But by far some the funniest things I've heard in my life are their conversations when you're bino'd in on'em. Genius. As far Matto4, the fact that Jack turns out to be a gay Dutchman who says F- a lot is only a super bonus. |

ROFL, where's that "You know you've been playing Far Cry too much when..." thread when you need it! Talk about a new slant on role playing in the bedroom, go overboard with THAT and it could get dangerous. Yes, they're quite amusing, especially the ones where one of the two guys talking says something totally moronic or completely off the wall, and the other one gets sarcastic, like "I'll paint his little red wagon",..."What, are you 100 years old or something?"..."My grandfather talks better smack than that!" I've been so amused by some of the dialouge I've used bits and pieces in some humor videos I made. M4's Jack voice acting is just appallingly bad, so much so I wonder if it's intentional. It IS Matto's first project using voices though and of course they're recruiting actors whom are willing to do it for free so I guess you can't expect a lot there. |

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be gay. He calls Boris "Big boy" after that hummer tunnel chase thingy, with a eurogay slant to his accent. It's pretty blatant. I say it's cool. Only they know for sure, tho. Boris and Jack, that is.

Add to that the fact that Jack has never taken the opportunity to watch Val or Ashley in the shower. With Val he just turns his back and with Ashley he falls asleep after eating a coconut.
Then there's the Deliverance pickup truck ride with Boris where he calls him white trash and they engage in gay banter. Boris mocks him with the sweety sweet remark about A-A-Ashley. Now we know why Val treated Jack so poorly in the original FC, she knew he wasn't going to end up with the girl at the end. I thought the voices in Matto4 were all pretty bad except for Ethan Black, who was absolutely great. Ashley had a good voice but her emotional intonation on the repeated remarks during fights was flat. The gratuitous potty mouth dialogue from Boris and Jack was not to my liking. And Jack is supposed to be an American ex-commando, not a Brit. While the voice acting was not so hot, the music was super, with good use of mood music during cutscenes, especially with meeting up with Boris in the beginning and with the X850 armory room near the end. |

Did any of you guys actually read the credits for M4 b4 u slaughter Wales own Goldmember...? I just played M4 through. Thought the voicing was perfect. IMO FC = Comic book camp. M4 paid tribute to that, professionally done and with humour... LOL Coops, Just read the Jack is US bit... only if you had the English version... There were around 6 or more Jacks in the original! And Jack wins so he has to have a bit of Brit in him |

Glad that even if you (or anyone else) don't rate the acting so much, you can at least find some entertainment value, that's what it's all about, for me anyway. |

WOAH, you guys and your leaps of imagination, but only the creators of M4 know for sure.
Coops, you seem to have read between the lines more than most. Even if Jack's M4 voice does sound a bit whimpy, blatantly gay seems a rather far leap from there. I'm wondering now just how the guy doing his voice is going to take this. Maybe it will be a compliment, who knows!LOL The way I saw the shower scene was Jack ogling Ashley, perhaps more an indication of his inexperience with women than being totally gay, then getting hit in the head by a falling coconut which knocked him out. If you noticed the coconut was cleanly split in two without looking to be nibbled on and you could hear a thunk before the screen went to black as I recall. Maybe I'm totally wrong but some guys that fall in love with guns and war spend all there time with it and are totally clueless about women, doesn't necessarily mean they're gay. And kmcrob, thinking he's gay and that it's a super bonus is just too strange sounding for someone that lets on about his sex with his girlfriend. I'm picturing you two watching Richard Simmons and Letterman having one of their stage fights during some of your role playing and laughing your asses off!LOL There's definitely good humor in M4, loved the sneak-up on Boris with the rolling pin,...oops,...OK, maybe he IS gay. Then the way he looks at the X850 for the first time like he's in love and the mood music kicks in. One of my faves and something others may have missed though is the bulletin board with pictures on it, one of which is a guy dressed up like Gordon Freeman. Stringed, you happen to know who that guy is, I was wondering if it's Matthias himself? |

I have absolutely no clue who that gordon guy is lool.. I was puzzled for a while too, maybe i'll ask matto.

My analysis was not meant to be a serious critique but a humorous take on some of the story. As far as the coconut goes, I cannot see a coconut splitting neatly in two by bouncing off someone's head. They are very hard nuts and it would take a machete to split one like that. Now, who has access to a machete? Jack could have used the coconut milk, a little rum he keeps in a flask in his back pocket and some pineapple juice to create pina colada'a (probably with a little umbrella in it). He got drunk and passed out dreaming of Boris.

Well after reconsidering I feel you're probably right about much of it. The recollection of the rolling pin made it kinda dawn on me.
M4 is a hoot to play but if it WAS Matto's intention to make Jack look pathetically gay, it makes me wonder if his humor has gone the route of mocking the game itself, rather than seeing it as the intense FPS game it is. I usually don't mind humor thrown into action games and movies, even if it's a bit corny. This kind of humor, however, tends to try and turn it into something it's not. |

As someone who likes watches Japanese anime in the original Japanese with subtitles on, I would have liked some similar options for Farcry.
If you watch the close-game credits, there are all sorts of credits for different European languages. I'd have liked to hear Jack and Val in German with subtitles! That would have been neat. As far as the American voices, they are fine. I actually liked Doyle's "younger" voice actor from the demo, and was surprised they changed him for the full game. But they were all professional slick. Val did sound like Hillary Clinton when she ordered you around ("Keep it up, Jack!"). But I guess she was deliberately supposed to be annoying, I'm not sure. |

Just so ya know, you can read a complete transcript of all the merc dialog, about 600 lines: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/452106891/m/85...551084434#8551084434 If you see some hieroglyphics and TM, its an apostrophe ('). Don't know why the text was replaced. Cpt Long USA, Ret. |
