I have a suggestion about joining and playing the game:

Look to see the 'texture' of the roles of players on a team. I haven't seen a map yet that needed 4 snipers! Usually only one is called for.. ok maybe 2... but no more! It's become amusing to me to see a team with 4 snipers and no engineers. For those who think this is a good strategy... Here's your sign>> With Stupid

Somebody has to build the walls and somebody has to tear them down. See what the team needs and become that! Making individual runs is usually futile and you just end up dying alone... with no flag capture Crying

Doc... I know you probably thought that fell on deaf ears when you were trying to teach me this... but I really was listening Wink2

I've noticed that an assaulter leading an engineer in to lay the bombs... and a few assaulters behind them to hold the flag... has a much higher success rate.

Play as a team... win as a team Thumbs Up

Finding online Far Cry games

There are at least three ways to find and browse servers for online Far Cry games. Each approach is pretty easy to use and each as different advantages and disadvantages.

  • The in-game server browser. To get to the in-game server browser, launch Far Cry, click on "Multiplayer" on the left side of the screen, click "Internet" near the center of the screen, then click "OK" to log in to Ubi. (Note: If this is your first time going online with Far Cry you'll need to register for an account and provide your CD Key, which is located on the back of your game manual.) When you successfully log in, you'll see a scrollable window listing various game servers. You can click on the column titles in this window to sort by that column. So clicking on the "Ping" column allows you to find servers with good pings; clicking on the "Players" column shows you servers with the most players. From this point, select a server to your liking and double-click on the server name. Far Cry will load the map the server is running and you will be dropped into the game.

  • When you installed Far Cry on your computer you were given the option to install an application called Xfire. Xfire is an application that runs external to Far Cry; it looks at the same information that the in-game server browser does without having to launch the actual game. If you neglected to install Xfire when you installed Far Cry, you can get it here. Xfire has chat capabilities, buddy tracking support, game profiles, and works with a number of games besides Far Cry. When you launch the application and finish creating your account, you will be able to see a list of game servers, their pings, the number of players on the server, and the map name. Double-clicking a server in Xfire will launch Far Cry and connect you directly to that server.

  • All Seeing Eye is a server browser similar to Xfire in that is external to the Far Cry game. You can get All Seeing Eye here. All Seeing Eye (ASE) has a number of different filters you can use while looking for servers - filter by country, ping times, game type, number of players, etc. When you find a server you like in ASE, double-clicking it will launch you into Far Cry and connect you to that server. ASE has a feature where it will give you the option to download new game-related files from Fileshack. You will need a free account on Fileshack to make this work. With this feature, new Far Cry maps, map packs, and mods that are available from Fileshack can be easily downloaded for you before you start up Far Cry.

These three methods of finding game server give you a variety of options to find and connect to Far Cry game servers.

Great stuff Sluggo!

I would add that using the Kapsreiter WorldRanks found here is another way to find people and servers. No program installation is required: just check the "online" option, leave the name as "*", select the game type, hit search and you can then see who's currently playing. By clicking on the green spot to the left of the name, another screen will pop-up showing what server they are on.

I often use it to find high ranking players so I can test my skills (or lack thereof).

thanks for the tips people

my online setup is ok, and is already a classic experience for me but I get bugged for the ease in which my character gets slaughtered. Now this may be due to my n00bish incompetance, but I can't help feeling my characters a downgraded version in some way of the other veteran users. My weapon damage seems meagre too as some players survive after I've unloaded half a clip into them! Er- so is there some kind of Character/weapon Ranking system I'm unaware of in the Servers, or am I just the ultimate n00b (I prefer to hear the former!!--)

Thanks in advance--

Ok, so I'm new to Far Cry and for some reason I keep getting kicked from servers right after I join, can anyone offer any suggestions as to why this would happen? I know my description of my problem is vaugue at best, but I've played many other FPS's online and never had this sort of thing happen.

gebox03 - we were all at the same point you are right now in terms of online skills. In fact, I'm still woefully inadequate when compared to most of the online players. First of all, don't panic, you'll get better with some practice. There are a number of threads in this forum with tips for improving your online game play.

There is no "downgraded" version of characters. Most of the time when you empty half a clip into someone you are either hitting body shots or being affected by lag or ping differences. When you hit body shots, you have to take out the other player's armor before you damage their health. The correction here is to aim for the head. Two or three shots to the head will take out your opponent. Of course, head shots take much more aiming skill.

If you are being affected by lag, you are seeing your shots hit where your computer thinks the other player is, but in fact the other player has already moved; the server knows it, the information just hasn't gotten to your computer yet. It's pretty much the same effect whether you are seeing lag or a ping differential. If your ping is 100 and the other player's ping is in the 20's or 30's they are going to have some advantage due to network response times. The way to work around this is to try and play on servers where you have a decent ping in comparison to the rest of the players. When you press the "tab" key in the game to bring up the scoreboard, you'll see the current ping times of the game players. If your ping is high and most everyone else's is low, you are at a disadvantage.

Dirtysocks - you might want to see if you can catch an error message display as you are kicked, and perhaps ask about the error message in the Technical Support forums. There are a few reasons why you might be getting kicked ... make sure you have the v1.3 patch, make sure you do not have the DEVMODE fix in for single player god mode, etc.

Hey ginro, I am not an expert at describing it, but I'll try:

'Ping' is a term used to describe how long it takes information or data to travel from your computer to someone else's computer. In playing online, if your ping is too high, then you will suffer the effects of 'lag' which is kind of like a 'stutter' effect during the game. This occurs when the server is no longer able to keep up with the data coming in and out, trying to compensate for everyone's different 'pings'.

Having a high ping not only effects you, but also others on the server. It is best therefore to choose games with the lowest possible ping showing on the multiplayer server menu. Your ping is generally determined by the distance from the server. You can look at the color of the ping on the menu: green is good, yellow is ok, red is bad. If you live in Europe and try to connect to an Official U.S. West Coast Server, you will probably have a very high ping.

Hope that helps. Cool

If you have patch 1.3 and have enabled devmode for SP, you must take it out of your shortcut to play MP.

The Defenders objective is to stop the Attacking team from capturing the flags. There are generally three flags in Assault maps, represented by the green or red squares at the top of your screen.

Flags are captured/defended in series, Attackers have to take the first flag before they can take the second flag. Once a flag is taken, it's corresponding box in the upper left of your screen turns red.

To take a flag, a member of the attacking team has to touch the current flag pole. When this happens, the flag is "activated", alarms sound in the game, and a red progress bar will start to move across the green status square for the flag in the upper left of your screen.

The defending team has about 5 seconds to touch the same flag pole to deactivate the flag. If the defending team does not deactivate the flag in time, the flag "goes off", shooting a flare into the air and the flag is captured by the attackers. Game play then moves to the next flag.

Like pakmanis said, you score points for doing various things within the game. But your game play should be centered around helping your team complete it's objective, be it capturing or defending flags.

Just a slight clarification...the series of red progress dots as the flag is being caputured are four dots at two seconds each and then an additional two seconds afterwards for a total of 10 seconds that a flag touch must be controlled by the attacking team in order to capture. (Hint: this is also the EXACT amount of time it takes for an engy's bomb to explode.)

new to playing FC online. When I try to connect to a server I get the message that the game versions do not match. I was playing fine on the official servers last night, but now tonight, I cant connect. I have patch 1.3. Is it my "build" number? (Which is 1337 btw) If it is the build, what can I do to connect to an official server?
Thanks

There is a new patch out, 1.31. That is probably the reason you get that message.

Revenge against Road Killers...
Car Jacking 101

Okay we've al been there; Deer in the headlights then flat as a pancake.

How to avoid this; Trees are your best friend! Usually the guy doing the Road-killng is so set on putting you head through his radiator he won't use the guns.

As quickly as possible put a large tree between you and the vehicle. If you can try and get an angle where even if they miss yo and the tree they will hit another tree or rock or building etc

Okay so you dodge the buggy/hummvee like a Matador with a bull, here comes the good bit.
If you are lucky they have hit something and are either stationary or slow moving. Run up to the vehicle and press use as though there was no one in it.

Next pull out the weapon of your choice, turn to your left (your in the passenger seat) and explain your feelings to the driver...

Soo funny to see it done and even better to do it! The 1st time it happend to me I thought wtf? (Tnx Blastphemor...) I and a few others in the same game thought the once occupied you couldnt get in an enemy jeep... Found out the hard way the you can! lol
