This post is a culmination of many thread/posts and covers a lot of the basics for MP. I know I've forgotten some stuff so veterans post away:
Changing your MP name To change your name go to the Options section of the main menu, then put your online nick in Multiplayer Name. To change the colors of your name:
The maximum characters is 20. When you want to switch colors, you have to reenter $x (x being the new color you want.) Thus, to make my online nick to appear as it does in my sig, it looks like this: $4|GF|$1Doc$2SEA$3L =19 characters If you connect to a server as Jack Carver you can change your name while on the server and not disconnect. Two ways of doing this: 1) Hit Escape and then go to Options and follow the instructions I posted above. 2) Go in to your console by hitting the ~ key (just below Esc.) Make a \ by using the Tab key. Then use name space then your name. The default color that will appears is yellow, so change it if you like. Command will look like this: hit ~ \name $8Joe $2Schmoe (again that \ is made with Tab, not \) This also works for showing FPS (another common question.) hit ~ to bring up console, use ur tab \r_displayinfo 1 = turns it on \r_displayinfo 0 = turns it off Another common program used to display FPS is called Fraps. I can also make screenshots and record movies. Its a free download, so get it here. Ingame Voting \listplayers (this gives a display of each player's slot number) \callvote kick (player's slot #) \callvote map "map name" ...without quotations...example: \callvote map mp_airstrip \callvote restart ...to restart a map Then to vote as a player simply: \vote yes or \vote no How to vote/kick using punkbuster Keybinding Mad_Murdock2k posted Tue November 23 2004 17:48 This part of post edited 10-21 to ensure people aren't getting PB kicked with new pbsv.cfg To be exact, it's game.cfg and it's in the root of your FarCry folder. For example, C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry. After you make your changes to the game.cfg, ensure that you right click and change properties of the file to read only so that when you stop playing Far Cry the file is not overwritten. Of course it works in MP, that's where 99% of it gets used, for say scripts. Here's an example of the end of my game.cfg file, which is pretty basic. Note that the file needs to be read only or it will reset to the default. Input:BindCommandToKey("\\sayteam Roger that !","subtract",""); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\sayteam Flag","add",""); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\say Good Game! Checkout H2K @ http://fearH2K.com","decimal",""); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\cl_rcon_serverip 1.1.1.1","home",""); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\cl_rcon_password bob","end",""); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\r_Fullscreen 0","f5",1); Input:BindCommandToKey("\\r_Fullscreen 1","f6",1); This message has been edited. Thanks Doc!
One question what s syntax for voting? \vote: yes Or? So to get the back slash you press tab while in the console right? I was wondering about why I couldn't get the back slash on my foreign language keyboard to work. Also, I thought dev mode didn't work in MP and would result in immediate kick. |

Yes voting is a good question. So if you want to call the vote you follow docs guide for console (though I will say I use \ not tab and it works fine) and then do the following to change a map. Note only servers that allow voting can you do these things.
\callvote map MAP_NAME To kick a player to have to do two things. \listplayers \callvote kick ## ## is the number next to the name of the player in the listplayers list that will come up. To restart the game do this \callvote restart For players to vote they just do the below choices. \vote yes \vote no Fairly simple but a pain trying to explain in game when you need 50% vote from a bunch of new players etc. Yep, devmode command switch on your game shortcut will result in instant kick if you try to play on multiplayer. |

How to capture or save a flag.
Touch the pole with the flag on it.It is also the flashing dot on your radar (bottom right corner) You cannot save the flag by killing the person that origionally touched it... You must touch it to disarm/arm it. |

@pak- Voting was covered in original post, but I guess I needed to bold the section. Also made note about devmode. Good point.
@Hunts- OMG...I've been using the tab to make the \ for so long I didn't realize just using the \ worked @bug- Ahhh, a simple one I overlooked |

When joining assault games you enter a lobby and here are the things you should consider from this point.
1. You will see there is a blue, red team and spectator option and it also shows how many players are in each one. Click on the team you want to join, but make sure to join the team with the least number of players in at the time. 2. You will see that there is a "Triple bullet" icon, a "Cog icon" and a "Cross hairs" icon. These are three different types of class you can play and covered below. 2a. Bullet icon: Is the grunt or soldier class. If you click on this icon you will see that there are drop down boxes below the three class icons, and these are your weapon choices, as you only get a choice of 4 weapons to start with and there are no extra weapons to pick up on the map unlike in FFA and TDM. Pick what weapons you want from drop down boxes and then you are ready to join the game using the apply button. 2b.COg icon: THis is the engineer class and if you click on it as with the grunt class you will see you have four weapon options again. Three are fixed options, which are your pistol, bomb and wrench, but you can pick either M4 rifle or medipack. The bomb is used in game to blow up any wall, or tower that has a wrench icon painted on it. You drop the bomb by selecting it using your mouse wheel or number function and then use your left mouse to drop it, the the bomb goes off after about 9 seconds so move clear. You can build things as engineer by selecting the wrench icon as you do with the bomb and then you can build walls, towers, gates and machine gun nests by looking for square blocks on the ground that have a wrench icon on the side and plans of what it will build on top of it. Just point your wrench at the top of the box and hold down your left mouse button and you will see a build progress meter appear and the object you're building will appear as a translucent image during the build progress. Once the meter reaches full the translucent image will change to solid object of whatever it was you were building. You can also repair any of these things if they have been destroyed, and some of them start off any game destroyed, so just look for broken walls, gates and towers and try placing your wrench on them and build to see if they are ones that can be repair till you are used to the game and know exactly what ones can be built. Medipacks you just drop on the floor to heal your friends on your team as there are no health packs anywhere else to be found on the map. You can get replacements for the medipacks and bombs from the ammo pick up points that are near to your spawns. 2c. Cross hairs icon: This is the snipers class, and if you click on this you will have the option of snipers rifle or rocket launcher and the fixed option of a pistol and a machette. Bare in mind that some clan servers don't like the rocket launcher and while you can select it from the options screen drop down options you will find that once it game you are automatically assigned the snipers rifle instead of the rocket launcher. 3. YOu will see you have an "Apply" button and a "Suicide and Apply" button. To join the game at start you would just push the apply button, but at some points in games you may want to kill yourself to change class quickly or to jump to the next respawn point if your team lost the flag you are currently on. To do this you just press escape to get back to the options screen, choose what ever new class you want to be and press teh suicide and apply button. 4. Note that unless the server has set it to stop it you can swap teams at anytime during the game, which is helpful if the teams have got unbalanced due to people leaving. What a lot of people don't know is that you DON'T have to suicide to do it. Just press escape and click on the red or blue team as appropiate, choose class if you want to change and click the apply button. You won't change instantly but you will change as soon as the reinforcement respawn timer reaches zero. Think that is most of it covered, hope it helps. |

I've asked what to put in the console many times during game play but noone replied
Can't forget the assault hint/tips/strategies here |

Oh yeah, an easy way to tell if the person in your crosshairs is on your team... Players have two stars on both sides of there name in the color of the team they are on.
I've been shot while looking at the scoreboard trying to figure out if a player is on my team or not. |

If you are looking through teh snipers rifle you should be able to see the colour of their shirt even if you can't see their name and stars. That and the big arrow on thier head.

When sniper, you do have binoculars, which is nice.
after you die, make sure to tap left click on mouse to "activate" yourself for the next respawn. If not you will continue to be dead, and wont respawn, which is fine if you gotta visit the boys room (or girls room.. I know there are a few of you out there!) another note about snipers... in assult, if the team you pick already has like 3 snipers, try to restrain yourself from being a sniper. Especially if you are the attacking team. |

I wish this thread was here when I first started playing assault. I had no idea what was going on. Bug dude's advice probably made you laugh but my very first game of assault I chose the sniper class and we were playing the first flag on dune. I was attacking. After having opposing snipers repeatedly kill me I decided to try to go in the base. During a violent moment I ran in and touched the flag and then hid. Nobody found me and I guess a bunch of grunts killed everybody who tried to turn the flag off so I got the cap. I tried it again and this time dude turned the flag off and then killed me so I realized my error in understanding. My point: If you have never played online mp the most obvious rules are definitely not obvious. Sure you should spectate for a while before playing your first game but that is like reading the instruction manuals, much less fun.
Here are a couple more super basic tips for the noobs. 1. It only takes 1 bomb to blow something up. If a wall is half built then your bomb will do nothing to it as will a rocket from a hummer. 2. It takes four hand grenades to blow up a wall or bunker and one hand grenade to blow up a minigun. 3. You only start out with 2 hand grenades but if you touch a few of the little boxes that are sitting on a table near your spawn you will get three more plus more bullets. When you kill somebody their ammo box will give you bullets but no hand grenades. (By the way, somebody needs to make a mod where you pick up the dead guys nades). 4. If you want to knife somebody that is laying on the ground you have to look down onhim so that you chop down. And when you swim you can use your knife to kill an enemy in the water. Thats all I got. The game is rough when you first start and you are going to repeatedly get your butt kicked but stick with it, assault is fun as hell once you get the hang of it. MP Handle:|pG|DasPunk I'll take your woman, then I'll take your beer, and then I'll take your flag. But if your woman is chunky then I'll just take your beer and your flag! |

A couple of things I might add here:
When you want to move fast, say to save the flag, don't run with saw (if grunt) switch to knife. Engineer will run faster with pistol not M4. If you select a gun with a scope, when traveling, try not to carry it all the time, because you can be seen a mile away (even through rocks) because of lens flare. People that have higher settings can see lens flare. Don't travel in obious straight lines, zig-zag a little. Vary your approaches to your target. People that travel in straight line are the easiest to mow down...with my saw hehe. Frag u later, Veg |

One tip I just remembered. Don't reload during a gun fight with someone, as odds are it will cost you the fight against a good player. Always swap to your back up weapon and reload if you're the one still standing after the fight. Most assault players do this as a matter of course, but I do find that FFA/TDM players still don't do this, at least nowhere near as much as in assault. Even if you have to change to pistol or machette it can be a good idea while your opponent is reloading. Machette is prime if you are fairly close already and have sprint left, as by the time they reload and are ready to fire again it will be to late for them.

I did not see anything about chat other than the key bindings.
You can direct a text message at the entire field by hitting "y", typing the message, and hitting return. You are locked out of the game while you are typing so make it quick. You can direct a text message at just your team by hitting "u" and typing the message and hitting return. Many players think they are just talking to their team and address the whole server by using "y" for all their messages. This can give away locations and strategies. Of course, good players know this and may give misdirection in the global chat but good information in the team chat. |

Or if you are like me you will give misdirection in chat and make it look like its coming from their team... IE
Quick build the bunker for me. LMAO. |

I have a question. I am having trouble with playing online. The gameplay is choppy online.
I just started Yesterday (December 15, 2004). So you can see why i need the help... I think its do to lag, but I'm not sure. My ping stays around 200-250. But yesterday (December 15, 2004) it stayed around the 150s, I dont understand it. I have a decent connection type [(MSN Broadband)(DSL)] I just don't get it... Please, if you have any advice on how to stop the lag please help me. Thanks. -Blindsnipa |

I have another question.
I read through some forums and read somewhere that you can be an engineer or something like that... and that you can build stuff and repair stuff. How do you do that? I mean like where do I choose to select the engineer or my weapons? Thanks. -Blindsnipa |

I was thinking... Could the choppy gameplay be due to me not having a patch downloaded?
My version is 1.00v, could that be it? |
||||

Snipa,
First of all, you should try to join games that have a ping of 100 or less. Any higher and you may have problems, and you may cause the other players to suffer because of your high ping. Yes, to join an assault game as an engineer, you will see several icons when the game loads, one being a gear-looking thingy. First click the color team you want to join, then click the gear icon and then press "join game". Left click your mouse to spawn into the game. And by all means, get patch 1.3. You will find many more servers available then. BTW, you can edit your post instead of adding multiple posts in a row. Click on the "edit" icon on the bottom right-hand side of your original post, make your changes/additions then post again. |

Getting kicked from a server on map change
If you get kicked from a server when a new map is loaded it probably means the server has loaded a custom / community map that is not included in the standard release of Far Cry. There are a number of web sites from which you can download custom maps. These sites include Ubisoft Maps listing, Gamespot, Far Cry HQ, and Far Cry Community Maps. Most custom maps come with installation instructions. If not contact the map designer or ask for help on these forums. |
