Does anyone have a tip on what to do to land the damaged P40 at Guadalcanal?

If you are using Wii make sure you are not using the cheat for unlocking missions and planes because it will take you longer.

you're plane is tilted to the right because of damage so balance it out by turning left slightly. If it's still uneven then go further.

i actually used the Spitfire V because that has cannons which are more powerful than the than the p 40's MG's
it took me loads of tries and it was slightly frustrating but i eventually did it |

I have been trying this one for about 2 weeks in between playing other things, and I am at that point of frustration. I have landed the plane, but either cannot stop it on the runway, or run out of time. How do I stop and where do I need to be once landed?

Landing the damaged P40 at Guadalcanal is certainly no easy task. One day I finally sat down and said I'm not getting up until I get this done... about 30 tries later I finally suceeded.
Anyhow, what finally worked for me was this: After starting from the checkpoint, I made a hard right u-turn heading back to the Island, but rather than aiming for the airfield, I aim far to the left of it, towards the mountains. When the airfield is finally to my right, another right turn puts the airfield in front of me but not too close. Doing this I found, gave me a LOT of time to slow the plane down, extend the landing gear, and line up with the airfield. Then while approaching, I tried to feel out how the plane handled. Basically it pulls to the left, so as you get closer to the airfield, you can practice keeping it straight. When your close enough, low enough, and slow enough, you land. Even with all this (like I said) it took some 30 tries, but I did land the thing. For completion, their are a few gotchas, which are: 1. It always seemed that right before I land, the plane would jerk upward. Usually, this meant trying again. 2. The obsticles on the runway are real. If you hit them, it hurts! Nothing was worse than the one time I landed, was slowing down, and hit a truck... Boom, try again. 3. You cannot land early. If you hit the sand, even on a textbook landing, it still killed me. Good Luck! |

I got it!!!! Finally, I searched back a few threads and found some good advice. If your having trouble landing at Holding Guadalcanal the best advice I've got is to turn the controls over to arcade. Sure the flying is a little hookey, but hey so is flying without a rudder! It took me about 5 tries after I set the controls to arcade. Here's what I did, as soon as the flak hits,
1. Drop the gear (otherwise, if your like me you'll forget to later) 2. Get the plane level and put the throttle all the way to the firewall. 3. Keep the runway marker on your right at all time. I tried to keep the green arrow marking the hanger just off screen. Here's the dirty little secret: That arrow is in the center of the runway, DON"T AIM RIGHT FOR IT. 4. When you make landfall, you'll just start catching fire. You can start gradually turning to the right here. I tried to keep the oil tanks at the end of the field off the right nose. 5. As you start your turn begin to throttle back and scrub speed and altitude. You must hit the runway, even being just a hair short crashes you. 6. Try to bring it down as soft as you can and as straight down the center as possible. There are four trucks on fire that you must dodge. If your tails not on the ground you can't steer and will explode when you hit them. 7. Throttle all the way back and pull up to stop. After the plane stops you will get a message that says hit (button) to switch planes. For me (Wii) it was 1 and it worked first time. Others on Wii have had that same message, but have had to hit -. Good luck, it's still an SOB of a level. |

Why wait for your plane to get shot? Just land before you are damaged, switch planes, then go back up & finish the mission. This is not a cheat, it is just a great way to enjoy such an historic mission without the frustration of crashing 30 to 50 times. Its a game. Have Fun !!!

After countless times, my 10 year old gave me this advice: when you're lined up to the runway come in low and slow, then when you land brake and tilt up on the nunchuck slightly, this will slow you down dramatically. Avoid obstacles on the runway. After he gave me this tip, I did it in two tries.
