Hello,

My CM11 keeps declaring "draw by threefold repetition" when a position has only been repeated twice. How can this be fixed?

I believe you are wrong. Can you post an example?

Threefold repetition can be a bit tricky... here's what Article 9, Section 2 of Laws of Chess from the FIDE Handbook says aout it:

quote:

The game is drawn upon a correct claim by the player having the move, when the same position, for at least the third time (not necessarily by a repetition of moves):

a. is about to appear, if he first writes his move on his scoresheet and declares to the arbiter his intention to make this move, or

b. has just appeared, and the player claiming the draw has the move.

Positions as in (a) and (b) are considered the same, if the same player has the move, pieces of the same kind and colour occupy the same squares, and the possible moves of all the pieces of both players are the same.

Positions are not the same if a pawn that could have been captured en passant can no longer be captured in this manner. When a king or a rook is forced to move, it will lose its castling rights, if any, only after it is moved.

My guess is that what you're seeing is case b from above... Chessmaster has the move and is declaring the draw before the third move is actually made. But it would be nice if you could post an example.

OK here's an example. It seems to me that the position was only repeated twice.

Position after 45.Kd2, after 47.Kd2 and after 49.Kd2 are the same (position of all the pieces is the same AND it's always the same side to move), hence it is a draw because the same position repeated 3 times. Nowhere does it say that it has to repeat 3 times in a row. It's enough if it repeats 3 times in a game, which it did.

It's a draw. No fault in Chessmaster here Smile

Here is an example of wrong draw by 3-fold repetition claim on the highest level:

Even the experienced arbiter made a mistake and confirmed the draw. Can you see why the claim is wrong?

Here is the solution.
