Just wondering... has anyone had a chance to read the proposal for a new version of chess notation proposed by Slavoljub Stojanovic?
At first glance, it appears to be rather simple, as well as making Fischer Random easier. However, I can't imagine that it will catch on. |

I think what we have now - (short) algebraic - is just fine.
That new proposal seems like a waste of space to me and it's in my opinion more difficult to read than algebraic (I guess because I'm not used to it). But it is certainly a waste of space, because you always need the whole table with all the files. Algebraic is much shorter. I don't think it will catch on. |

i just read the pdf file and i am not impressed the author explained the new notation well enough, but did not provide any justification and i could find any as to why a new notation is needed in fact, the new notation seems to be just algebraic notation put into a grid with column headers for the files, so what ? why is this extra complexity needed ? what value is added to algebraic notation for all this extra effort printing game sheets ? algebraic notation already has a way to indicate the source square of the piece move, altho it usually seems abbreviated & just showing the target square etc |

My thoughts exactly. Its like the guy went out of his way to make algebraic notation into something less usable and more wasteful. Lets face it, he basically took standard algebraic notation and just made it more complicated. For one thing, you can't read his notation without basically using the entire page. Makes me think of a story I once read about the difference between Astronauts and Cosmonauts: Nasa spent millions of dollars to develop a space pen, and Russia gave its cosmonauts a pencil. |
