Apparently, this happens not only to those wanting to cheat, but to grandmasters as well...

Yesterday, during Round 2 of the EU Individual Open Chess Championship, GM Nigel Short lost his game against Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant because his cell phone rang in the middle of the game.

However, unlike cheaters, Short immediately admitted the probem and accepted the loss like a gentleman:

This kind of things happened before, but it always ended with the same result - the player who's phone made a sound was forfeited. At the beginning players tried to argue that the phone didn't rang (the rules mention ringing), it just made sound when the batery was low, but the officials didn't see it that way. If the phone makes ANY sound, the player gets forfeited.

I don't see a point why players even bring the phones in the playing hall. Why to carry something you can't use anyway? And what was that book that Short had by himself all about? Did he plan to read it during the game???

Yes, I wondered about that myself. It's much like smoking while filling the tank of your car... Blink

Well, I don't know about professional chess players. Perhaps they have personal assistants who can monitor their phones while they are playing and notify them if an emergency arises. As for me, I cannot leave my phone unattended for hours at a time for several reasons, chief among them being the ability of my kid to contact me.

My family and work are greater priorities than chess, but that's just me.

As Ebutaljib states, I see no reason for bringing your phone in a tournament hall: it's a distraction for you and also for your opponent! Better leave it in your room. Roll Eyes
