Hello,
I have used CM 11 for some time and hardly I was able to increase my rating from 900 to 1610 making a lot of ranked games with various personalities. Tonight I was playing a 20 min. ranked game against Vlad (rated 1846) and I was able finally to get a draw: I was happy (it was no easy for me) and I got the usual message ..."bla bla... your rating is increasd by 9 point and is now 1080" !? Now I am 1080 instead of 1619! This was a terrible error of the program! Please, help me: it's this a known issue? There is a way to recover my rating to the right value? I can accept to loose the 9 point of the last game but not all my rating... I have spent really a lot of time to grow to this level (I'm not a so good player) and sincerely now i'm very sad and disappointed if all is wasted out... I know that it's only a game, but this bug really hurts me... I'm running CM 11 v 1.2.0 under Vista Home Premium + SP2. Sorry for the disturb and many thanks in advance for the support, Best regards, Andrea (from Italy) |

Yes, this is a known bug.
Sadly, there is no way to recover your previous rating. |

Hello,
first of all: many thanks for the answer, I appreciate it very much. Now I know that I cannot trust CM anymore for this issue... I ask you two things: 1) There is no possibility to manually edit the user files only in order to remove the last event from the history and come back to the previuos state? If there are problems disclosing this kind of informations in public I can send you my data and you can send back to me the "cleaned" ones. Honestly I think that this will no be possible (for technical reasons or for time requirements) but asking is not an outrage... 2) My fear is that this will happen again. In order to avoid this kind of problem do you think that it is possible to periodically make backup of the user folder and replace them completely in case of data corruption like this or there will be other problems by doing this? Any suggestion or workaround in order to avoid other possible failures in the rating management are welcome. Best regards, thanks, Andrea |

Hello,
I update you with my latest experiences: today, in order to obtain as soon as possible my lost points again, I decided to play a series of 10 minutes ranked games against Mateo (rated 1729) because I learned how to defeat him relatively easily. After the first win I was wondering to see my rating jumping directly from 1080 to 1631! Please, note that I was rated 1610 before the Vlad draw wich destroyed my rating. By looking now at my player statistics there is a big negative "spike" in the chart with three consecutive games rated 1610, 1080 and then 1631 and this is clearly the sign that something was wrong here. To see if all was still right I have then continued defeating Mateo other 6 consecutive times today and now I have unlocked the "Neon" Chess set and I'm rated 1738 (I understand that it could be considered not so "fair" to defeat several time the same opponent in a similar play only in order to gain rating points, but I have spent a lot of time to find this "weakness" and I will consider this as a sort of "refund" for all the games I have played in these months... Currently the most powerful opponent that I have defeated is Josh-age 9 (rated 1800), and it was very hard for me. Now it seems all working fine so I can start again to study how to defeat Vlad. In any case I have spent a lot of time around this issue and it remains an open question here: in order to avoid possible future rating failures or data loss it is possible to keep an updatd backup copy of my user folder in order to recover them if the program fail or I will go into some kind of troubles by doing this (or simply it doesn't work)? Thanks a lot in advance for the support, best regards, Andrea |

There isn't a way to instantly regain your lost rating points, but you can back up your rating and settings... this is helpful for just such an occasion, or in case you need to reinstall Chessmaster... the instructions are in the Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition FAQ.

I'm used to playing games on CM 11 at 40 moves in 25-30 minutes and my rating against the various personalities was up to 1450 on this computer. Since I recently started playing online I decided to practice at some of the other game settings to work on speed. I've found that the program gives me a different rating for each game type, so now the graph has a lot of vertical lines where I switch to other settings. I noticed that it has a name for the different ratings. The message I get is something like 'your blitz rating fell 7 points and is now 980'. I hope this helps.

Actually Chessmaster keeps track on three of your ratings: Blitz rating, Standard rating, and (overall) Rating.
